Now a days, almost everyone has access to a smartphone. It is said that smartphones can be addictive. Tristan Harris article, “The Slot Machine in Your Pocket” states that it is gets really bad to the point where they take advantage of human weaknesses to ensure your constant attention. Harris says that, “When we get sucked into our smartphones or distracted, we think it 's just an accident and our responsibility. But it 's not. It 's also because smartphones and apps hijack our innate psychological biases and vulnerabilities” (Harris, 2016). When people look at their smart phones, they look at it for multiple reasons, but the most common reason is to see if you have gotten a notification. I agree with Harris because many people who do online …show more content…
In an article by Jayne Leonard called, “Damaging Side Effects of Your Smartphone Addiction”, she states that, “Nearly two thirds of American adults now have smartphones”. This is causing some issues because now, “Three out of five (58%) U.S. smartphone users cannot go more than sixty minutes without checking their phones.” She is saying that not even half of us can live without constantly checking our devices to see if we have gotten some news we think is so important to check multiple times an hour. I think this is really bad, because we have been manipulated to check our screens often for notifications which distracts us from actually doing something more productive like playing sports or engaging in social …show more content…
Things in our phone that are easily accessible like online gambling make it hard for some people to stay away from their phone. Online gaming can have multiple damaging effects to the body and mind because it can ruin relationships and give you long term effects. This can hurt ones that are addictive because money is involved and all it takes is a touch of a button to risk it all. Risking the money can be a cause that can end relationships and end life’s because it is like putting all the things you love and own at risk, you may have a chance to keep that, but if you lose a bet, everything can be gone (Segal, 2016). Also, one that has a gambling problem can begin to reject family, and making their children feel rejected. Jeanne Segal, a graduate from Harvard University, states in her article, “Gambling Addiction and Problem Gambling”, smart phones make the situation of gambling addiction even worse because the phones automatically send out notifications when you have won a prize. This causes the user to look at their smartphones and tempt them to engage with the notification. He says that people with ADHD are the ones that are most impacted. There are many factors to why gambling is a problem. A lot of screen time is damaging to the health of the person in which Segal states
A common theme is taking place where as people feel that cell phones are starting to take over others daily lives. Many people go through their day to day lives not even relizing how often they are on their cell phones. In the article, “Our Cell Phones, Ourselves” the author Christine Rosen talks about how cell phones are starting to become a necessity in every way towards peoples lives. Rosen talks about both the good and bad effects of cell phones and how they have changed the way in which we work our daily life. Although I think cell phones can be necissary, the constant need for use could be the beginning of how cell phones will take over our every day lives.

This was all discussed and analyzed throughout Adam Alter’s TedTalk, “Why Our Screens Make Us Less Happy”. The increase of screen time has increased so much because technology has grown and evolved so much that we implement it into our lives in every way possible because it seems to make our lives easier when really we are just becoming brainwashed. Research has been done that proves that we all spend more time on apps that make us not feel good, such as social media and games, and less time on apps that make us happy, like education or exercise. Alter claims that we get so sucked into our smartphones that we don’t take the time to enjoy the world around us due to FOMO (fear of missing out). Carr touches on this same belief and argues that technology in general is consuming our lives and causes us to not be able to think linearly and disrupts the way that we read, write, and comprehend all information.
Today’s society accepted phones so fast and easily, that most of the things that can harm us, are actually some of our social norms that we don’t even realize we are doing. Cell phones can have effects on the way people think and act, their interactions with people in society, and the amount information people retain from the direct result of multi-tasking. Cell phones are a very important asset to people, and good resources of information, but they can have negative effects on people such as depression, anxiety, and addiction to the use of the cell phone. Distractions from cell phone use have also been linked to many motor vehicle accidents as well. Cell phones were created to make our lives better, and more efficient, but do they harm us more than help
Raise your hand if you’re one of 44% of Americans that sleep next to their phones at every night. It’s true, so many of us are dependent on our mobile devices, that psychologists are now calling it the “Invisible Addiction”! Since its invention critics have debated every inch of the cell phone. From its usefulness and size, to its effects on health after prolonged usage. The conversation has since shifted. The cell phone market today is flooded with a plethora devices to choose from, sporting top of the line materials and industry leading software, but this just scratches the surface. With over 968 million worldwide smartphone sales in 2013, consumers are feeding into the latest technology that the market has to offer. Though they may become
Myths vs. Facts of Slot Machines The modern world seems to have no room for myths. Once perceived as larger than life demigods and deities manipulating the forces of nature as they will, nowadays they are merely ‘silly stuff people believe with no slightest element of proof’. In this era, people are increasingly ready to embrace reality and forget these myths of demons and dragons. In this sense, ‘myth’ is defined as the opposite of ‘fact’ Myths exist across all industries and as such each industry has its task of dismissing these myths as false believes.
Many people keep their phones, or other devices, on through the night. They use them as alarms or wake up calls but when messages come at night, people “…wake up with the sound of their phones vibrating…” (Sleep) or ringing with a new message in their inbox. Many people say that they sleep lightly because “…the sound of their devices wake them up…” (Thaker) constantly through the night. If there is a message, no matter what time of the night, people have a compulsion towards it and check immediately. “It is almost as if checking messages and posts has become a part of our life today” (Thaker). It is something that has taken over the mind and it is putting a toll on the amount of rest we are actually receiving. Researchers have said that over “f...
Physical consequences can also lead to social consequences, an article states, "an addicted gamer who loses sleep because he 's playing so much simply doesn 't have the energy to invest in relationships. Lack of sleep may also make him irritable and difficult to be around" (Video Game Addiction). The article also goes on to explain the long term effects that having a video game addiction can
According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for, on average, about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems. First and foremost, health problems due to the increase in technology usage is becoming a bigger issue than one might think.
A beautiful commercial, “Disconnect to Connect”, which was made by Thailand DTAC Company, shows that there are many people always focusing on their cell phones. The commercial shows a man ignoring his girlfriend who is walking with him on the beach, another man neglecting his friends who are playing piano, and a father overlooking his children who are playing around. Then, they smile and find the happiness of life after they turn off their digital devices. These things happen constantly around us every day. Nowadays, the functions of digital devices are stronger, and our eyes and fingers contribute more time on it. There is no doubt that the digital devices make our life more convenient and easier because people can connect with each other immediately. Nonetheless, people should not spend too much time on digital devices for three main reasons: having less face-to-face communication, depriving people’s brains of needed downtime, and negatively influencing people’s health.
Video games are often portrayed in a negative manner because they are seen as having an "addictive" quality. Addiction has been defined as "A primary, chronic disease, characterized by impaired control over the use of a psychoactive substance and/or behavior. Despite the wonderful benefits games offer as diversions, spending too much time, to the neglect of normal life duties, and social development with direct contact with others can and often does happen. Clinically, the manifestations occur along biological, sociological, spiritual and especially psychological. Some psychological effects that affect the behaviors are failure to play outdoor games, difficulties in work or school, telling lies to everyone, decreased attention to personal hygiene, decreased attention to family and friends, and disturbances in the sleep cycle. Many video game addicts have strug...

There are many factors that contribute to games and gambling. Many people don’t realize how much of a toll gaming and gambling takes on their lives both physically and financially. Most of modern games have something what’s called “house advantage”. The “house advantage” is when there is an element in the game that gives a certain player an advantage to win.
