The Sami or Saami (Lapp) people have inhabited the northern portions of Scandinavia, Finland and eastward over the Russian Kola Peninsula since ancient times. Russia, Finland, Norway and Sweden claim territories in what is now regarded as Sapmi (Lapland). The term Lapp is now considered offensive as it is thought to mean a patch for mending cloth, and the preferred name is now Sami or Saami. In Lapland now referred to as Sápmi, the Saami tended herds of domesticated reindeer, harvested marine resources along the coast, caught fish in the rivers and lakes, and hunted wild reindeer as well as small game. Although some Saami living along the coast were relatively sedentary, inland communities tended to move annually from semi permanent winter villages to spring, summer and autumn camps. Today, roughly 10% of the Saami are associated with reindeer herding and 2,800 are actively occupied in herding on a full-time basis. The Saami is thought to have followed the glaciers northward as they receded at the end of the last ice age with first written accounts of their existence documented by the Romans in 98 AD. The Romans described them as inadequate and lacking weapons, houses or horses. A number of archeological sites in northern Norway, have dates back to over 10,000 years ago, and are thought to demonstrate evidence of the continuous habitation of Sapmi lands since that time. It is not known if the Saami have occupied these lands since the last glacial period but it is believed that they are the descendants of the original post glacial inhabitants. In regards to this trend the head of the Sáami’s youth council, Paulus Kuoljok, said, “We Sámi often face stereotypes and have to defend ourselves all the time,” he added that, “There are few employees at my own work place Sáami background. I often hear things like ‘damn Lapp’ and that we Sámi have things so good because we can fish and hunt where we want to and we always get welfare payments” much like the whites confer on natives in America.
The novel “Indian Horse” by Richard Wagamese demonstrates the many conflicts that indigenous people encounter on a daily basis. This includes things such as, the dangers they face and how they feel the need to flee to nature, where they feel the most safe. The participants for the study must identify as an American Indian adult living or lived in urbans areas and have a strong positive cultural identity. They were also asked 2 questions regarding their culture identity.
The systematic racism and discrimination in America has long lasting effects that began back when Europeans first stepped foot on American soil is still visible today but only not written into the law. This racism has lead to very specific consequences on the Native people in today’s modern world, and while the racism is maybe not as obvious it is still very present. These modern Native peoples fight against the feeling of community as a Native person, and feeling entirely alone and not a part of it. Definition: Mental health has become a pressing issue in Indigenous communities. Often, a combination of trauma, a lack of accessible health resources, substance abuse, violence, and socioeconomic situations lead to high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality in Indigenous Peoples. This crisis is especially apparent in Indigenous youth, where there is a growing suicide epidemic but little mental health support and resources are provided. The increase in stigmatized and untreated mental illness has continued as trauma and systemic injustices remain unaddressed. Indigenous groups, governmental parties, and health organizations are involved.
Due to Skara Brae being prehistoric, and therefore, writing had not yet been developed, any evidence found on the site is archaeological. This includes any physical remains or artifacts that help reveals anything about the settlement. An example of an obvious of evidence are the 8 huts that were inhabited for about 600 years by about 50-100 people at a time. These huts were originally built to be underground in order to insulate and protect their homes from the harsh elements that come with living close to the sea. However, due to the layout of the houses, it is suggested that people of Skara Brae were a close-knit community. This is supported by the evidence of stone passageways connecting the underground huts in a network of tunnels. Also, since the houses were all built to a similar design and the furnishings were very similar and placed in the same positions in all the huts, it is suggested that status was not that important and not weighed in terms of personal possessions. Instead, it is the community that was thought to be more central in the people’s lives during this time.
A long family tree of mistreatment and undue suffering in addition to present lack of resources and poverty has resulted in considerable distress among tribal members and families living within the majority of reservations today. As a result of such distress and despair, many Native American families living in reservations have been torn apart as alcohol, drugs and family violence have become rampant within their communities. Furthermore, the inaccessibility of most reservations combined with lack of resources proves challenging to provide proper housing for families. In addition, the American Indians make up a minority of the least educated, sickest and poorest people within our country. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Native American youths in the 15-24 age group and 2.5 times the national rate.

Alaskan culture is full of a variance of characteristics. The Alaskan people have a deep sense of respect, pride and honor. This is as a result of the need and ability to adapt to an ever changing environment and still find a way to thrive. The Alaskan people are a strong representation of the American spirit of perseverance. The research done in this paper allowed me to view the Alaskan Native in an entirely different manner. My intent with this paper is to inform the reader on Alaskan culture, geographical breakdown, beliefs, as well as highlight the advancements of the Alaskan way of life throughout the years.
