The role of the Service Coordinator is to connect clients to resources on campus and in the community. Our client population could potentially be in the exploratory, establishment, or maintenance phase. For clients in the exploratory stage, assessments could be the biggest benefit for them since most people in this stage could be unsure of what direction they want to go in. Clients in establishment phase might be clients who are towards the end of their undergraduate or graduate degrees and are seeking to strengthen skill sets in the work force. Maintenance phase clients could be in the process of furthering their education or doing continued education that is required by their career.
Clients will have access to FOCUS, where they have access to online assessments. These resources help clients who are feeling unsure of what direction they want to take in their career path. Once the client has taken the assessments on FOCUS, the counselor is able to work with the client in processing what the results were. FOCUS also allows the client to learn more about the degrees that are offered here at ISU. Along with having FOCUS as a resource for our clients, I will have handouts that direct them to CareerOneStop, Idaho Career Information System as other possibilities for information. The websites offer different resources such as assessments, learning more about a career field and learning about other possible pathways someone can pursue.

Resources that are from the community would include Vocational Rehabilitation (Voc Rehab). Voc Rehab offers clients who have a disability, or meet other requirements to funding for schooling, training, or tools required for a certain career. Having Voc Rehab as a resource allows us to be able to help more of our clients meet their goals. Another resource from the community would be businesses that have an affiliation with ISU. Through this affiliation, business can come to job fairs that are held and there is a potential for CPI’s to be created at that business. Working closely within our community ensures that graduates from ISU know of jobs within the state and those businesses can continue to grow.
What the program specifically does is assess the main career clusters that are applicable to the state of Illinois’ economy. The Pathways project focus on the 9 clusters that are of particular importance to state’s economic growth and development. These clusters include: Agriculture Food and Natural Resources, Architecture and Construction, Energy, Finance, Health Science, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Research and Development, and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (2013, p.21).

Career Cruising is an informational website and available at participating schools, public libraries, and employment agencies across North America. This program is intended to direct individuals towards appropriate career choices based on specific criteria, such as education, training and previous experience. Individuals can find this information database self-directed, user friendly and rewarding while presenting a variety of options to meet their personal needs. Not only does it offer assistance for the perspective individual in career development, but also on SAT/ACT preparation, online study guides, interview strategies and seminars by promoting growth and effective career opportunities.
I have not worked with clients in a formal counseling setting. However, I know the importance of clients taking assessments to gain a better understanding. For example, if the client is having difficulty selecting a career, I would have the client take a career assessment to determine client strengths. Then, the client can use the evaluation to research jobs that would allow the client to use their strengths.

The institution chosen for this organizational scan is my current employer, Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). CNM is a very large 2-year public institution. According to the Carnegie Classification System (2008; 2010), the current student population is 27,999. It is a public urban institution serving multiple campuses. It is exclusively an undergraduate two-year institution, and the undergraduate profile is higher part-time two-year (para. 1).
Ultimately, this class helped me gauge and find a suitable career path, which will forever shape my future. Self-Exploration Over the course of this semester, I have learned a tremendous amount of information about myself from the self-exploration series. The results of my Personal Globe Inventory (PGI) presented me with a couple of different career paths to explore. The first type of career that brought to my attention was an enterprising career.
Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

The CASA Education Coordinator position educates CASA volunteers who advocate for children in foster care, youth attending our Court Orientation for Dependent Youth (CODY) events and connected agencies/stakeholders. What experience do you have with curriculum development for adult learners? What knowledge do you possess about the CASA program, child welfare, foster care and the juvenile court? In my current position with Gateway Community College as a Career Navigator it requires me to work with curriculum for our adult students within our Manufacturing courses. Along with curriculum development for our Manufacturing courses in my position I have also developed curriculum for our Employer partners for the continuous professional development for their employees.

The client should be honest with the counselor, discuss concerns, and listen to the counselor. I would expect students to trust in their abilities to make their own choices get in touch with their feelings. I believe client roles are resourceful in helping people take more responsibility for their lives and solve their own problems. I believe the client is fully capable of fulfilling their own potential for growth.
