The Role of Women in Society Expressed in a Magazine
I have analysed a magazine called ‘Tatler’ in order to observe women’s
role in society. The definition of ‘Tatler’ is gossip and therefore
telling us that the tone of this magazine is conversational.
On the front cover, the title is in a turquoise colour and the model,
which is also on the front cover, is wearing a turquoise colour. This
shows a direct relation between the title and the model. The model has
an article in a magazine therefore showing that this article is a
gossip article which therefore shows that editors think women like
conversational articles. This increases a larger range of women
audience, and therefore telling us that women enjoy ‘gossip’ magazines
therefore telling us they like to get involved in public ideas and
therefore take part and interest in society’s problems. However the
editors also increase their audience by placing degrading ideas
towards women therefore portraying an idea that women are not
important in society today.
The front cover quotes ‘The prettiest girl in America’. Broken syntax
is used to make the readers feel ‘pretty’. The editor gives us a hint
that women need to be pretty in order to take advantage of things in
the world. However this is not true and this gives us the impression
that the editors have weakened women’s role in society.
The front cover also contains a large black heading which makes the
reader immediately drawn to it. Broken syntax is used to describe
young people’s problems but also combines mature information to drawn
in the targeted age group which is the late 20’s. It has combined a
young, male, teenage pop group and what they think of politics. This
tells us that only male assumptions are made on one of the most
important roles in leading a country telling us that women have no
importance on politics and therefore on society. We also know that
this magazine is aimed at women in their late 20’s as the woman on the
front cover is in her late 20’s and is wearing a long dress giving the
Apart from politics, it focuses on more light-hearted topics toward the end of it. This issue goes from addressing Trump’s plans in office to health tips on stress. The magazine educates the readers in a variety of topics.
This advertisement appears in the Seventeen magazines, whose readers range in age between thirteen and twenty-five. The visual shows a young, blonde, Caucasian female who is attracting the readers to the COVERGIRL™ product. Placing this sort of ad in the Seventeen magazines is appealing to most young women due to the beautiful celebrity, Taylor Swift, who uses the same product. Also, the colors used, such as the pastel pinks, draws in the reader since they are very feminine colors. Finally, the product itself is appealing to the audience of Seventeen because younger women like to look their best, and to do that, lip-gloss is a handy accessory.

Due to the idealization of domesticity in media, there was a significantly stagnant period of time for women’s rights between 1945 and 1959. Women took over the roles for men in the workplace who were fighting abroad during the early 1940s, and a strong, feminist movement rose in the 1960s. However, in between these time periods, there was a time in which women returned to the home, focusing their attention to taking care of the children and waiting on their husband’s every need. This was perpetuated due to the increasing popularity of media’s involvement in the lives of housewives, such as the increasing sales of televisions and the increase in the number of sexist toys.

With all of the controversy applied to male vs. female dominance in households, and in the workplace, there seems to be an argument either way. In the essay, “Men as Success Objects”, the author Warren Farrell explains this threat of society as a whole. Farrell explains the difference of men and women growing up and how they believe their role in society to be. He justifies that it doesn’t just appear in marriage, but in the earliest stages of life. Similarly, in the essay “Roles of Sexes”, real life applications are explored in two different novels. The synthesis between these two essays proves how prevalent roles are in even the smallest part of a concept and how it is relatively an inevitable subject.
In the 1960’s women were still seen as trophies and were beginning to be accepted into the work industry. They were still homemakers, raised the family, and made sure their husbands were happy. That was the social norms for women during that time period. They were not held to high work expectations like men were. But something amazing happened that would change women 's lives for centuries; it was the 1970’s. It is sad that as a society in the twenty-first century we are still trying to combat these issues. Women should not have to face discrimination in the workplace as a society there should be an equal standard for all individuals no matter the race or gender.
The mass media over the years has had such a profound role in creating an image on how women should be viewed. These images have caused not only the male public but women themselves to believe that they must attain a certain kind of body or occupation to fit into society.
