Egyptians worshipped the goddess Isis as one of their primary deities in ancient times. Isis was a winged goddess, the mother of Horus, and the wife of Osiris. She is known as a protective goddess, one of both motherhood and magic while associated with other areas as well. The winged pectoral amulet of Isis from the Egyptian New Kingdom, dated between the 21st and 22nd dynasties, between the years 1075 and 712 BCE. During this time, Egypt was at the height of its power, following the rule of the Hyksos. Borders were expanded and there was trade with both Asia and the Aegean. Thebes was the capital at this time, heralded as a metropolis of wealth and luxury. Overall, the Egyptian New Kingdom was seen as a return to the glory days.

For this reason, there are several holes throughout each of the three pieces of the amulet that would have been used to attach it. The amulet is reflective of the significance of deities in ancient Egypt. Many deities were worshipped, though some such as Isis were more prevalent. It is also indicative of the role they served in society, whether in life or death or, in some cases, both. Belief in the afterlife was key principle in ancient Egyptian thought. The amulet likely served to protect the deceased in their journey to the afterlife and beyond. By burying the mummy with the amulet, the level of importance placed on ritualistic procedures regarding the dead is highlighted. Permanence was also an important concept, which is illustrated by the amulet. Consistency between the two wings and the sides of the headdress are indicative of this. Moreover, because of her pose and overall design, Isis is depicted in a sense that is not momentary or fleeting, but instead long-lasting, and the amulet is intended to protect the deceased throughout the passage of time. In the ancient Egyptian culture, the belief was that there was a life force and spirit inside of the body, known as the ‘Ka’. Therefore, mummification was performed as a ritual to preserve the physical features of the body as well as to protect its inner spirit, mainly to ensure that the ‘Ka’ could recognize the body where it may dwell in the eternal life. Thus, the funerary psychology of ancient Egyptians was that death did not bring an end to living, but instead was only an escape from the physical human life and a gateway to immortal being. Due to the fact that a being’s life span was short in ancient times, people’s main hopes rested in their afterlives, where they would be with the gods (Stockstad 121).
Ancient Egyptian culture was largely focused on the afterlife. One of their most important deities, Osiris, became the ruler of the Underworld through death. The pharaoh and elite class prepared for their impending deaths throughout their lives. Much of what survives from ancient Egypt today was found in tombs and temples of the dead. When one of the elite died, the process of laying him or her to rest was extensive. Harold Hays explains that “the ritualized process of embalming and mummification is usually stated as lasting seventy days” (Hays 5). "Funeral Procession, Tomb of Pairy" shows two of the processes that Hays details. The first depicted is the procession to the tomb. Pairy’s body would have already been through several processions, mummification, and embalming. This particular procession’s goal is to lead not just the body, but also the spirit into the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that in order for the “ka” (spirit) to live forever, the body had to be preserved which is why they mummified their bodies. As an extra precaution, sculptures like these were made to serve as a “replacement body” for the ka should something happen to their body.
Many ancient societies were fixated on different beliefs and deities throughout the early stages of civilization, and some of the earliest signs of these periods of mythology begins with the early Sumerians and evolve into many different African cultures. One of the more significant and more influential figures in the discussion of ancient mythology is Osiris and the history and depiction of him in Ancient Egypt. This story outlines many influential things in Egyptian society, such as the conflict between order and chaos, death and the afterlife, conceptions of kingship and succession, as well as many of the early influences of Egyptian religion in the early stages. Much of the evidence of Osiris lies in the Pyramid texts, seeing as the timeframe for the myth was around 24th century BC. Many of these same texts arise in the Middle and New Kingdom of Egypt and are influential in Egyptian folklore, as well as the storied history of the civilization. Many of the figures included in the legend, which include Isis and Horus were prevalent in many clans throughout Egypt. Much of the history surrounding Osiris has been lost, but many ancient historians and famous writers in the ancient world attempted to piece together his story.
Throughout Junot Díaz's novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the text poses concerns with narrative viewpoints, familial history of the Dominican Republic, and most importantly, specifies characters. Díaz introduces characters who are present throughout the entire novel, and others who appear only briefly. Isis, in particular, holds a special place in the novel. Before Díaz introduces Isis, we are introduced to many of her family members who maintain family traditions in both the United States and the Dominican Republic. The concept of Jihad was not widely known in the western world before the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Since then, the word has been woven into what our media and government feed us along with notions of Terrorism, Suicide Bombings, Hamas, Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, and now, Jihad. Our society hears exhortations resounding from the Middle East calling the people to rise up in Jihad and beat back the imperialist Americans. Yet, if we try to peel back all of these complex layers of information we can we attempt to find out what Jihad really means. Webster’s Dictionary defines Jihad as “a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty or a crusade for a principle or belief” (1). Often, media depicts Jihad in the same manner—as a vicious clash between two very different peoples, each of whom believes that righteousness, and in many cases God, is on their side. From this interpretation and our daily media intake, one may reasonably assume that Jihad refers to nothing more than violent acts, or “holy wars.”
It is clear that tombs and burial rituals were a key element in the Egyptian society and their way of life as it ties into almost all things they did on a daily basis. Whatever a person’s status was when they were alive followed them into the afterlife. Food and luxury goods were buried with a person so that they could have it in the afterlife. The tombs became a person’s new house after they died. Therefore, making it as nice as possible was really important. Art work and clay models were added to a person’s tomb as material goods needed for the afterlife. They were also seen as decorations that kept the tombs looking nice. Throughout the years, Egyptian artworks on the inner parts of the tombs and on the coffins show a development in the Egyptian customs. Each new development was created to better preserve the bodies and comfort of the dead.
Ring and amulets were especially worn to ward off evil spirits and/or injury. Cowrie shells were worn to show the desire of the wearer to have children. They also wore jewelry with the god Heh, which means the god of ‘millions of years’, which symbolizes long life. Younger Egyptians wore charms that resembled beards or side locks of hair to symbolize youth and innocence. Perhaps the most interesting fact about jewelry was that many children wore fish amulets to prevent from downing and accidents in the Nile River.
The funerary rituals introduced by the Egyptians were the most intricate, spiritual rites in their times and, perhaps, even to this day. Their elaborate customs, tombs, and gifts to the dead were representative of their pious, devoted nature. Albeit not all were as imposing as the oldest and still remaining Seven Wonder of the World, the Pyramids of Giza, all were meaningful and sacred. The Egyptians, highly reverent of their dead, adopted ornate, religious burial practices to fit to every member of their society.
