ABSTRACT
ICT have become commonplace entities in all aspects of life. Across the past twenty years the use of ICT has fundamentally transformed the practices and procedures of nearly all forms of exertion within business and governance. Education is a very socially focused activity and quality education has traditionally been connected with strong teachers having high degrees of personal contact with learners. The use of ICT in education lends itself to more student-centred learning settings. But with the world moving swiftly into digital media and information, the role of ICT in education is becoming more and more essential and this importance will continue to grow and develop in the 21st century.

In a way, ICT can be imaginatively pinched upon for professional development and academic support of the pre-service and in-service teachers (NCFTE, 2010). It also opines that Teaching is a profession and teacher education is a process of professional preparation of teachers. Teachers are concerned, in an important way, with the total development of human beings - physical, intellectual, emotional, social, moral and spiritual. While the dimensions of teaching other than the informational and cognitive may have suffered neglect in modern times due to a variety of factors, one cannot deny that they constitute an integral part of the teachers’ role and functions. Digital media is one of the most rapidly expanding technologies of our age. When we as a society think of ‘technologies’, it’s usually synonymous to ‘improvement’. “[The] internet [has become] our medium of choice for storing, processing, and sharing information in all forums, including text” (Carr, The Shallows). While the internet does provide a plethora of information, it is only helpful to those who can fully access its potential. In the era of the computer, the digital divide in its simplest form is defined as gaps in rates of physical access to computer and internet technology.

Even though the theory of Digital Culture is still in its early stage of development and there are still many different views and arguments on what it really encompasses of, it can be said that since its conception, digital technology has been analysed and examined through many schools of thoughts, theories and methodologies. Technology has been around through modernist and postmodernist times, and even though the “Digital Age” has not really been coined an era, the rise of digital culture even over just the past one to two decades have changed the way we conceive the future of digital technology and will definitely continue to be an even more integral part of our every day lives (Creeber and Martin, 2009).
Have you ever thought that what happen if technological devices disappear all over the world? It is a fact that technology affects all aspects of people’s lives. If there is not technology, people will face many problems: cannot connect to each other, hard to find information, and everything can be delayed. Modern devices help our lives become more convenient and effective. So that it is obvious that the educators should take the chance to apply technological devices into the classroom because there is an inevitable trend towards technology in everyday life, the Internet is an optimum way for the students to learn, and using technology enhances the classroom by making learning more enjoyable.

Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).

We live in a world where the technology age is becoming a thing. The advancement of technology is unbelievable from finding water on Mars to be able to talk to someone across the world. But before that, there was a time when these were just ideas. This was the time period where technology had a different impact on society compared to the present or categorized as the Industrial Age. The time period, known as the Information Age, is the present where technology enables the use of the Internet that gives information like no other have before.
Technology has been an integral part of society for years. People use all sorts of technology (computers, smartphones, iPod’s, etc.) for tasks of daily living. Beyond everyday tasks, such as technology, improves academic success is what the next work will be discussed. “There is a pressure on schools to adapt to the new technology, the same impulse drives that teacher, like anyone else, to use computers in their everyday lives” (Culling, F, Cedric, H, Nusrat, 2009, p.18). Having knowledge in technology helps professionally.
This age is dedicated to more of learning age. It is said that even the teachers are the learner. This is the age of knowledge gradually shifted towards the age of communication. Thought and ideas are playing a crucial role in the present 21st century. The period when the denial and ignorance was the answer to the learner’s inquisitiveness has no solution. The answer to these questions is the technology which has solved problem to very much extend. People call such kind of change where teachers are supported with the technological tools to prove their worth. It does not say that previous centuries teachers were not efficient or they do not have that kind of knowledge. In the present time, the knowledge has got the support of the technology to explore. The learners are satisfying their requirements to the larger extend. The technological tool such as internet has shown great difference. The use of videos and photographs, 3D picture support, animations and documentaries and use of computers especially has changed the whole scenario. The most advanced version we have seen are the mobiles and the various applications which are loaded in mobile has taken the world in strong fist. The laptops are converting into the interactive machines which are loaded with n number of facilitation.
Technology affects every aspect of our lives. From romance to business, it has shown its presence everywhere. But technology has had a huge impact on education that cannot be denied, and has done nothing but improve the quality and quantity of education.
Teaching in the 21st Century has come about due to the realisation that the current education system has fallen behind the modern world, become outdated and ineffectual. We are over a decade into a Century which has brought forth an information age with limitless resources and instant access to information. Collaboration has turned global, with people all over the world communicating, sharing ideas and solving common issues through and with technology. The issue has become more so how to teach rather than what. Education in the 21st Century calls for personalising learning so that every learner, regardless of learning style, race, culture, creed or gender, may develop to their full potential and promote “life-long learning” (Collins, 2009, p. 104) for both teacher and learner alike. It also brings to light the importance of redefining the roles of both teacher and learner.
Education has transformed immensely from where it first began and needs to continually transform in the future to meet the growing needs and expectations of society. Consequently, teaching and learning are quite different in the 21st century when compared to previous centuries. There are several key factors driving change in education today with the focus on globalisation and social factors, including: Information Communication Technology (ICT), cultural and social inclusion along with changes in the economy, jobs and businesses. Additionally, 21st century learners are expected to ascertain a multitude of qualities and skills in order to succeed in today’s world. ‘What is the future of technology in education?’ is an article by Matt Britland, the head of ICT at Kingston Grammar School and director of education consultancy Realise Learning, and ‘New Class(room) War: Teacher vs. Technology’ is an article by Samuel G. Freedman, a professor of journalism at Columbia University. Though both authors are educators, they share differing views on the role of technology when it comes to education today. Britland writes about his vision with regards to the role that technology should play in education in the future. On the flipside, Freedman writes about his frustrations with students and their excessive use of technology these days. While both articles have their merits, they lack a well-balanced argument, hence, decreasing their credibility. In addition, although Freedman’s article is more well founded, Britland is able to bring in more well thought out reasoning with the use of logos.
