“The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”- Christopher Hitchens. Critical thinking is an important skill for people to possess. It allows us to hear a statement and analyze it based on logical reason and the existence of fallacies. I say that this is an important “skill”, because it takes practice and knowledge to be able to justify the validation of a particular statement and to remove your personal bias opinion of it. “The whole purpose of reasoning, of logic, is to arrive at the truth of things”. One of the lecture discussions that stood out to me was when we were in Part 1 of the “Being Logical” book by D.Q, 1 and we went through the steps for preparing the mind for logic. At first, I thought to myself “prepare my mind for logic? That seems a little redundant”. However, as we went through each of the steps and discussed each one into detail, I realized that every single one of these steps that D.Q. discusses is vital for logical thinking and must be done in order to arrive at the “truth” of things. I precisely liked this topic, because it really got me thinking about “words” and their origins. When you think of language you may think of it as a way to communicate to other humans, but it is so much more than just that. Language is the basis of all meaning of concepts and ideas that everyone and everything has. It is not just a way of communicating, but also the only way for us to even know what anything means, by associating it with a “word”, “symbol”, “sign”, and etc. The following question was posed in the third response paper, “without language (or words) would our existence have any meaning at all?” This question is a difficult one to address, but I think the answer will vary from person to person. For me, I think that without language our existence wouldn’t have meaning. It is hard to think about the world and all life in general without language.
