Our five senses –sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch help the ways in which we perceive the world around us. And while they seem to work independently at time they can effect each other and the way we comprehend something. Seeing something pretty, touching something soft, eating something cold and smelling something rotten are the sense we use to connect with the world around us and will all effect how we move forward in that situation. Our sense of smell may be connected to our memory. Like smelling a certain perfume may remind you of grandmother. Touch effects everything-Touch is the line between our bodies and the outside world. We use this sense to help gather information, form bonds and establish connections between things. There is a emotional connection. It happens with a social touch that could be a calming effect or to scare. It additionally happens with pain whereas if you touch something hot. The most critical essay I ever wrote was the extended essay on biology. I had to critically think about my topic by researching. Then I had to write a lab to perform. The last thing was to analyze my results and research that I found in order to reach a conclusion. Within this process, I also had to use creative thinking in order to get through the problems that arise and buildup knowledge. My essay topic was on the effects of carbon dioxide on plant growth. The lab design I wrote called for enhanced concentrations of carbon dioxide. I didn’t know how I would get the enhanced concentrations into a tank of plants. After some creative thinking and experimenting, I was able to connect a tube from a tank to a styrofoam cooler with dry ice. This essay allowed me to generate knowledge through the interaction of critical and creative thinking. By using examples in the areas of art and natural sciences, I will evaluate how knowledge is generated through the interaction of critical and creative thinking.

Merleau-Ponty distinguishes three aspects of the psychological process; basic sensations, perception, and the associations of memory (Merleau-Ponty, 1994). Basic sensations receive raw information from the world and transduce them for our perceptual processes. Perception unifies the infinite amount of information about our environment, from our environment, into a meaningful structure. Perception is interpretive, but its presentation of the world is as distal and objective. There are three central features of perception for Merleau-Ponty. When it comes to the way a person detects and perceives information, sensation and perception are the concepts that are being referred to. Although sensation and perception are two different concepts, they both are connected to each other. Many people are unaware of the ways the mind can accumulate information and they just assume that the mind functions because that is what it expected to do. Sensation and perception are two processes that interconnect to allow one to gain sense of the surrounding world. Sensation, which is the reception of an external stimulus through sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound, is the initial step of this process, whereas perception is the second step, where interpretation of this data is converted into a mental representation, which is then capable of being used by the individual. Sensation turns into perception through transduction, which is the conversion of external stimuli into signals that are then sent to the brain and analyzed. Critical thinking traits are parts of a person’s character. Many critical thinking traits are difficult to acquire to a full degree, or to act in a consistent way. As thinkers, we can improve in each of these traits and can develop these traits over time. Being able to fully consider yourself as a critical thinker, developing all of these traits must occur. These character traits can somewhat be difficult to overcome or to improve on certain traits. The two traits, confidence in reason and intellectual perseverance stand out to me the most based on current experiences.
