The most critical essay I ever wrote was the extended essay on biology. I had to critically think about my topic by researching. Then I had to write a lab to perform. The last thing was to analyze my results and research that I found in order to reach a conclusion. Within this process, I also had to use creative thinking in order to get through the problems that arise and buildup knowledge. My essay topic was on the effects of carbon dioxide on plant growth. The lab design I wrote called for enhanced concentrations of carbon dioxide. I didn’t know how I would get the enhanced concentrations into a tank of plants. After some creative thinking and experimenting, I was able to connect a tube from a tank to a styrofoam cooler with dry ice. This essay allowed me to generate knowledge through the interaction of critical and creative thinking. By using examples in the areas of art and natural sciences, I will evaluate how knowledge is generated through the interaction of critical and creative thinking. In order for a knower to gain an ample amount of knowledge, then they must have balanced interactions of critical and creative thinking. A knower uses critical thinking when they are analyzing, observing, applying, synthesizing, or evaluating ideas. When the knower uses creative thinking, they are using their knowledge to develop solutions, and express them-self with original ideas. For a knower to generate new ideas, they must be able to apply what they know, and then synthesize the idea. Without the dueling interaction between critically and creatively thinking, then knowledge can’t be attained to its fullest potential. When I worked on my extended essay, I did a lot more creative thinking then actual critical thinking because I had to synthesize a lab. I also used a lot of creative thinking when finding a way to make my lab work, but I also used some critical thinking to actually apply what I came up with to the lab. Questions are something that must be asked and can be very important when reading a literary work, watching a movie, or just simply trying to understand the habits of people today. Asking questions opens up the human brain to dig farther and deeper into the meaning of why someone did something in a specific way and what purpose it has that something must be done in that way. It depends on the subjects whether creative or critical thinking leads to a influential or the amalgamation of the two like in the natural sciences. Knowledge is generated through the interaction of critical and creative thinking. As an IB student in high school we are faced with problems that involve us using our minds for critical thinking. It is hard for students to engage their creative thinking in times when it is critical. We are rarely encouraged to use our creative minds during problems. In this world there are logical answers that is probed using critical thinking. But what is the right situation to use critical thinking? Can critical and creative thinking be used and interact with each other in certain problems or maybe all problems? In this essay I will focus on mathematics and natural sciences as two areas of knowledge.

To get better education, thinking and learning power comes from our hearts and minds. As Ho says in the article “We Should Cherish Our Children Freedom to Think,” American schools provide opportunities to students and a path to achieve their creativity, which “people tend to dismiss or take for granted” (2007, p.113). Moreover, he also raised a question if American education system is so wretchedly lower in merit, “why is it that this is still the country of innovation” (Ho, P.113)? Kie Ho believes that creativity and freedom to think is the essential part in American education system. If students use critical thinking skill to develop creativity, they can better understand the material and evaluate their own behavior and characteristics. In many other countries, education inhibited the children’s freedom to think and that repressed the development of students’ activities.
Knowledge is generated through critical and creative thinking. Creative thinking is something new or original that is created with value. Critical thinking is a type of thinking that questions assumptions and validates or invalidates a current belief or something that is said to be previously true. Knowledge is created through the culmination of generally accepted assumptions and creativity. How do you separate general assumptions and creativity? These two types of thinking can be easily separated in regards to concrete or realistic ideas compared to abstract or original ideas however to generate new, acceptable knowledge critical and creative thinking must interact together. The questioning of established beliefs with the creation of unorthodox new ideas will expose the most beneficial knowledge for the world.
