The weekend of the 3rd of March the Red Bull Crashed Ice was held in Ottawa for the first time for the 150th anniversary of Canada. The event was held downtown Ottawa beside the Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel near the Parliament. Cassidy, Noor and I bused all the way to the Rideau as a meeting point since we were coming from different parts of the city. It was pretty easy to navigate ourselves into the city since pretty much everywhere near the event was blocked with policeman controlling the circulation and telling people where to go. Normally those streets would be filled with cars but the planning committee did well by closing them. We all met around 4h00pm that Saturday for some pre-event ideas we had in mind. With the opened gates at 4
The flight had come in from Van Nuys Airport (VNY), Van Nuys, California. Witnesses recall that the plane had landed and parked at the FBO to receive some fuel. The plane had sat on the ramp for approximately 45 minutes before it took off again. While on the ramp, numerous witnesses recalled snow falling and “contaminating” the wings of the planes. Before the plane had taken off, witnesses said that they did not see either of the pilots inspect the wings for icing conditions and snow buildup. The METAR for the airport was, “wind calm, visibility 1 ¼ miles in light snow and mist, few clouds at 500 feet, overcast at 900 feet, temperature 1°C and dew point -2°C.”(Insert here) The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) recorded the captain asking the pilot, “How do you see the wings.” The first officer replied, “Good.” And the captain said back, “Looks clear to me”.(Insert here) The captain turned on the engine bleeds which help keep icing conditions down. A downfall with engine bleeds is that they reduce the take off distance. The captain then proc...
Crash is an Oscar winning, American drama from 2004 written, directed and produced by Paul Haggis. The film is about racial tensions and the effect it has on people showing their daily lives in Los Angeles, California post 9/11. The film asks hard hitting questions about racism and shows harsh realities that are normally avoided. Has an in your face approach, very raw and heart heavy. Shows reality that is normally avoided. Crash actually evolved from a real life incident where Haggis had his porsche stolen outside of a video store in 1991 in Los Angeles. There are a variety of races in this movie, hispanics, blacks, whites, asians and a particular persian family. Instead of
The Great Depression of the 1930's is a benchmark for all depressions and recessions in the past and in the future. In the booklet "The Great Depression of the 1930s in Canada" , Michiel Horn gives an intellectual dissection of the events that occurred during the Great Depression. Michiel Horn's approach leaves the reader with a foul taste for the Dirty Thirties. This essay will summarize Michiel Horns key points as well as discuss the ability of Michiel Horn to report his findings.
We made it to Ottawa at seven that evening. We tied up at the Skiff Club dock adjacent to the northern terminus of the Rideau Canal Waterway. The first eight locks climbed like stairs to the level of the city, but we were too late to lock through that day and too tired as well.
After all these years, racism and prejudices are still present in our society. It seems as though there is not a day that goes by without seeing a story about a racially fueled crime or act of discrimination on the news. As much as people would like to believe that racism no longer exist and that stereotyping and racial profiling do not happen on a daily basis, the truth of the matter is that these prejudices are still very existent today. In the 2004 movie Crash, the lives of several Los Angeles citizens intertwine when faced with racism, stereotyping and crime.
The division of wealth is unevenly distributed throughout society’s so called social ladder. The “haves,” those who run corporations or have major influence on government decisions, control the majority of the wealth and resource available to achieve that wealth. Their major purpose it to build on that wealth no matter what the consequence may be. Those decisions sometimes negatively impact the lives of the “have nots,” people who, like us, have minimal if any influence on corporate spending and decisions.
The Great Depression was not just a little event in history, hence the word “great”, but a major economical setback that would change Canada, and the world, forever. The word “great” may not mean the same thing it does now; an example of this is the ‘Great’ War. These events were not ‘good’ or ‘accomplishing’ in any way, quite the opposite, but in those times it most likely meant ‘big’. What made it big are many factors, both in the 20’s and 30’s, which can be categorized into three main points: economics, politics and society. With all these events, compressed into ten years, this period of economic hardship of the 1930’s truly deserves the title the “Great Depression”.
In the Oscar award winning movie Crash, directed by Paul Haggis, a network of characters portray the lifestyles of different races in Los Angeles. In the movie, characters “crash” into one another, similar to pinballs, to spur new emotions and explain their actions. A main character Anthony, an African American male, steadily tries to prove why he does not and will not fall into the black male thug stereotype. He was slightly close minded and repeatedly had a negative outlook towards his environment. Anthony created contradictions between what he said and what his actual intentions were. His actions were guided by his environment and further analysis of them will prove his motivation.
It is clear that the trekkers are to blame for the On-To Ottawa Treck and the Regina Riot that followed it because it is evident that Trekker misunderstood Bennett and his intention and overreacted. Bennett did what he had to do when he established relief camps but the trekkers did not see the necessity of relief camp and overreacted.
Finally, to my delight, the day had come when I would be flying my maiden flight for British Airways. This was the new & most sophisticated airline, the Boeing 777-300ER from London to New York. The journey would usually take 7 hours but the crew has to report for the flight preparation 2 hours prior to the flight. After all the final checks with the ground crew, we gave the green signal to invite the passengers on-board. Once we had all the passengers and their luggage loaded, we taxied to the runway. The weather was miserable in London this morning and there was an excessive amount of water on the runway. Once we a...

When I received the email of the grand opening of the Latino@ Center I was super excited. I haven’t gone to any fun events on campus this year so I wanted this one to be the first. Not only did it seem fun but they were also giving out free Mexican food and drinks. So when I got there with my friend it was around 12:10 and the event started at noon. The line for the food was so long it was up the stairs and around the corner. I told my friend to save our spot in line so I can go to the grass area and listen to what the speakers were saying. I couldn’t hear a whole lot because people were on the side eating, talking, and making noise. What I did hear was a man talking about how he was excited and happy to
Many people attribute the decline of Los Angeles public transportation to the General Motors streetcar conspiracy. While this did play a role, there were also many other contributing factors.
The roaring twenties saw a great deal of prosperity in the United States economy. Everything seemed to be going well as stock prices continued to rise at incredible rates and everyone in the market was becoming rich. Two new industries: the automotive industry, and the radio industry were the driving forces of this economic boom. These industries were helping to create a new type of market that no one had ever seen in history. With the market continuously increasing and with no foreseeable end, many individuals were entering the market because they saw the market as a sure fire way to get rich quickly. The rising prices of stocks and the large increases in trading created the speculative market that would eventually crash. On Monday, October 28, 1929, New York seemed to be the primary focus of the entire world. During that week in October, the bottom of the New York stock market fell out, an event that would lead the world into the greatest depression it has ever seen to date. Many individuals including those in the Federal Reserve Board saw the crash as a healthy thing that would bring all speculative trading to an end, and bring stock prices down to “realistic” levels. Following the crash the Fed followed a contractionary policy, which does not encourage expansion. Although that type of policy did need to be implemented prior to the crash, the decision to implement contractionary policy after the crash at best can be considered a questionable decision. The unstable financial situation of the United States that lead to the great crash can be attributed to the lack of leadership and action of the Federal Reserve in the financial world during the roaring twenties.
For my observation project I choose to go to this bar and grille called Swerve Grille it is located in Shaker Heights, OH on Chagrin Boulevard. The bar is actually right before you would get to Warrensville Center Road. Where the bar is located was in a very nice, clean environment. The bar and grille is in a predominantly white area; the bar seem to be in a very busy area of Shaker Heights. The bar was in a plaza that has about five different establishments Curves fitness center, bicycle shop called Bicycle Boulevard, a bakery called Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, a picture shop called Moto Photo and, a hair and nail shop around the bar and grille. There were many cars going up and down the street as I was going into the bar. There was a shopping plaza right across the street from the bar. I went to the bar on Tuesday September 22th, it was about 8 p.m. the sun had just gone down. As I walked in the establishment the room
