Being able to project and vocalise effectively is vital in drama and in every day communication. Speech allows us to convey messages to one another in an understandable format to all. Communication and building relationships rely heavily on being able to vocalise our thoughts but being able to do so with the correct emotion and interpretation. Speech can also be a give away to any tension in the body, nervousness or anxiety. The way in which we talk, the tone, pitch and pace can all express how we are feeling or what we are conveying, sometimes without even intending to do so. Tone can be split into another subcategory of amount and quality. The tone amount refers to the volume level within a speech. If we are loud we usually express a higher pitch in our speech. When we are quitter our pitch tends to soften and be lower for it.
The quality of tone is something in which we use to convey emotion, we speak softly or aggressively to convey different emotions. This however, does not need to affect the volume of the directed speech, but it does change the intent delivered by the person speaking.
An overlooked tool for speech is the use of pauses within a dialogue. Pauses can be an effective way to draw attention from the audience to create anticipation for what is to happen next. It can emphasise deeper emotions and adds emphasis to a statement. However, if it is overused it begins to lose its usefulness and the audience become less engaged.
Using tools for speech and for breathing in drama is very important. It can alter the emotion and the tone one is trying to convey within a speech and further deliver a message that a vocalised message alone cannot do. The correct method of breathing can lead to a clear voice and a
