Humans can not be Obese and Healthy Obesity kills. The health effects, lifestyle, and psychological effects associated with obesity can alter ones’ life. One who is overweight is often suffering from other health issues that do not allow them to live a healthy lifestyle. Obesity is a prevalent topic in todays society because so many suffer from this disease. Through case studies and statistics any one human cannot be obese and healthy. Obesity is a world wide epidemic that is killing slowly. An article in Time Magazine presented a report that said, “Every state in the U.S. has an obesity rate that’s over 20% - and many well over that,” (Sifferlin). These issues make a patient more susceptible to major problems like stroke or heart disease. There are many other types of life threatening diseases that are caused by obesity, but those are not the only types of issues developed from obesity. Psychological effects of being obese can change ones’ attitude and out look on life for the worse. Some of the most common psychological issue consistent with obesity are depression, anxiety and eating disorders. When one feels sad, lonely, stressed, and frustrated or in other words depressed, they may regress to eating their feelings away to try to make themselves feel better.
When they feel distressed, they turn to food to help cope, and though such comfort eating may result in temporary attenuation of their distressed mood, the weight gain that results may cause a dysphoric mood due to their inability to control their stress. (Collins, Bentz)
This is a vicious cycle where their weight makes the feelings worse so they eat more. Anxiety caused from being self conscious about being overweight, can make an obese person use a copping mechanism such as eating, or they may start new habits like wearing clothes that are baggy to try to hide their body from the public.
