Once again, President Donald Trump stunned not only the nation, but the whole world on June 1st by declaring his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement, a global agreement enacted to decrease the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and minimize any further harm towards the planet in an effort to slow down global climate changes. "We're getting out", Donald Trump said as he declared the United States' depart from the Paris climate agreement. The Paris climate agreement started in 2015 and was adopted by 195 nations; that’s nearly every country in the world. The decision made by President Trump and his administration to leave the Paris climate agreement will not benefit our country nor the world in any way. This …show more content…
adopted after being negotiated by representatives of 196 parties at the 21st Conference of the parties of the UNFCCC in Paris. As of today, every country, even North Korea, has been on board with the agreement except for Syria and the United States. The creation of the Paris climate agreement was a major turning point in the effort to fight climate change. For the first time in history, countries around the globe united together in is an effort to fight further destruction of the planet. In all 25 pages of the agreement, the main goal is stated in just a simple …show more content…
Contrary to President Trump’s views, global warming does exist and the world needs to act fast. In addition to the 2 degree increase limit, there is a follow up requirement limiting the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in order to significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change. This part of the agreement is especially crucial to small islands who would be devastated by the rising sea levels due to temperature increase. It’s so important that they’ve even adapted the saying, “1.5 to stay alive”. Despite the big steps to make, nations are most definitely not expected to fulfill these requirements right away. The Paris climate agreement sets a framework for the reductions to begin in 2020. After 2020, the deal will evolve every five years in order to reevaluate the earth’s condition and change the agreement accordingly. The United States going in on the Paris climate agreement was the peak of President Obama and his administration’s environmental agenda. The Obama administration strongly advocated the agreement and even released their own
COP 22 Marrakech: This was the 22nd Conference of parties involved in the Paris Agreement . The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and implement plans to show the world how the Paris agreement is in effect and they are putting in all the resources for its effective and efficient
Examine, The World May Have Hit Peak Carbon Emission, document E, which talks about how there is a chance that we may be on our way to lowering carbon dioxide emissions, but the future of climate change lies in the hands of China’s and India’s growth and how they plan on fueling their growth. It also depends on the national leaders that signed the Paris climate agreement and whether they plan on upholding their part of the agreement through the years. The author of the paper Fast Company describes the unpredictable future by saying “Even if emissions were to peak soon, global emissions would still take years to decline substantively. An acceleration in the transformation of energy use and production is needed.” This shows that even though nations are finally coming to the reality of climate change and are planning on taking action with the treaty,
The Kyoto Protocol was developed in Kyoto, Japan in 1997 and came into full force on the 16th of February 2005 in an effort to compact climate change (“Kyoto Protocol Reference Manual,” 2008). By targeting green house gas emissions, the Kyoto Protocol created an effort to “promote sustainable development (“Kyoto Protocol To The United Nations,” 1998).” The protocol’s goal was to reduce green house gas emissions from 1990 by 4.2% by 2008-2012, which 37 developed countries signed and pledged to (Schiermeier, 2012). With such a specific target, the goal was clear and quantifiable, making it easy to measure, when the time came, whether or not the Kyoto Protocol’s goal had been reached. Also, the involvement of these 37 countries was crucial in obtaining the goal. Without international cooperation the goal of reducing carbon emissions would never be effective as green house gasses effect the entire globe’s atmosphere not one local
Climate change is a change in global temperature and regional climate patterns. At the turn of the 20th century, there has been rising issues about climate change, arguing that global warming and climate change is an issue worsened by the human race. Change in climate is a natural process in which changes from season to season and even fluxuates over thousands of years. Over the time frame of the last 650,000 years there has been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat (Global Climate Change). It could be argued that climate change is a natural process and the Earth is suppose to change its temperature from hot to cold. Yes, that is true. However, the rate in which the temperature is changing is something this Earth has never endured. In
People need to stop and think for a minute, away from the unfounded claims of inevitable catastrophe and think in a well-educated manner about the actual implications ahead. There is too much uncertainty in how emissions actually have affected, and will affect the climate. Upon moderate investigation, weather events that have been blamed turn out to not have any correlation. Science doesn’t know everything of the impacts of carbon dioxide, nor can they ever know. Global climate change is such a popular topic, but it actually seems to turn out to be a lot of misinformed hype and opinion. The public needs to set aside the hype about global warming and consider the facts and uncertainties surrounding it, rather than just swimming with the current.
Global Warming Blown Out of Proportion The United States by no means should consider complying with the Kyoto Protocols. My conviction in the negation towards passing this bill is that the whole Global Warming idea is highly blown out of proportion by politicians and the mass media. Global warming, as it may exist in the most gentle form, is the result of natural changes and could yield positive benefits. It is a predictable, quantifiable process.
The dictionary defines climate change as a change in global or local climate patterns such as heat and precipitation. The trees that provide oxygen, the water that keeps us hydrated and the animals along with plants that gives us food grant Earth with features that make it adequate to live in. Global warming, as stated in the name, occurs when Earth 's atmosphere starts getting warmer. Global Warming has become a problem throughout the world that will need to be addressed over the coming years because it affects animals, sea level and landscapes around the world.
Alleged Global Warming has been a hot topic and been widely reported in the American media since the 1970s. In March 2014, TED, a nonprofit committed to expanding ideas with short talks, gave a powerful presentation of the alleged current consequences of Global Warming in Gavin Schmidt’s (2014) talk: The emergent patterns of climate change. His claims are stark and he implores his audience to take the grave predictions of Global Warming seriously and not just write it off as insignificant. While Google Trends (2014) shows (graph 1) that search terms for global warming in the United States (red) have decreased while worldwide (blue) interest (image 1) fluctuates with India showing the most curiosity. Yet, not everyone agrees that Global Warming is real just as not everyone agrees that cigarette smoking is hazardous to your health when scientific studies show otherwise. By defining Global Warming, giving the major arguments on both sides of the topic, and offering an overview of scientific studies, this paper will help one think critically and thoughtfully about Global Warming.
Under the Protocol, 37 countries ("Annex I countries") commit themselves to a reduction of four greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride and two groups of gases hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons produced by them, and all member countries give general commitments. At negotiations, Annex I countries (including the US) collectively agreed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2% on average for the period of 4 years from 2008-2012. This reduction is relative to their annual emissions in a base year, below 1990 levels. Since the US ha...
It seeks to implement post-kyoto agreements applicable to all UNFCC nations. According to the France Diplomatie website “The meeting will mark a decisive stage in negotiations on the future international agreement on a post-2020 regime, and will, as agreed in Durban, adopt the major outlines of that regime.By the end of the meeting, for the first time in over 20 years of UN negotiations, all the nations of the world, including the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, will be bound by a universal agreement on climate.” (“France Diplomatie” 2013) In order to prepare for COP21; as of November 12th, 2014 the governments of the US and China have come to an agreement in which the US will lower it’s emissions by about a third by 2025, and China will taper off its emission and begin to reduce them by one third by 2030. China has also agreed that by that time at least 20% of their electricity will come from renewable resources. This would constitute an increase of 1000 GiW of energy from current levels. (Hoye, Yan. 2014) Although some, like US senator Mitch McConnell, have argued that this agreement allows China to “do nothing” for 16 years and places the burden on us, this sentiment is misguided. Because US emissions are down by roughly 10% from 2005 levels, as discussed earlier, The United States will have an easier time of reducing our emissions further to 26%-28% by 2025. By comparison over the last decade China has been developing very rapidly, lifting more than 100 million people out of poverty. The new Chinese middle class consumes more energy, causing China’s emissions to skyrocket during that time. In the last 10 years China has added one and a half the entire US number of coal-fired power plants. In order to reach the agreed upon cuts of up to 30% by 2030 while still maintaining growth China will have to change business as usual drastically. This is one reason for the agreed upon increase in renewable energy
Throughout history climates have drastically changed. There have been shifts from warm climates to the Ice Ages (Cunningham & Cunningham, 2009, p.204). Evidence suggests there have been at least a dozen abrupt climate changes throughout the history of the earth. There are a few suspected reasons for these past climate changes. One reason may be that asteroids hitting the earth and volcanic eruptions caused some of them. A further assumption is that 22-year solar magnetic cycles and 11-year sunspot cycles played a part in the changes. A further possibility is that a regular shifting in the angle of the moon orbiting earth causing changing tides and atmospheric circulation affects the global climate (Cunningham & Cunningham, 2009, p.205). Scientific studies suggest that all these played a role in past global warming and cooling periods. Today, however, there is a lot of conflict on whether humans are causing a global warming that could be disastrous to humans and all species of plants and animals on this earth. This paper will first explain the greenhouse effect, then take a look at both sides argument, and, finally, analyze the effect of global warming on world-wide sustainability
The climate on the Earth is changing. Ice age is interleaved with the global warming. In the present age, the temperature of the Earth's climate system continue rapidly increase and it leads to global warming. Global warming is the process of gradual growth of average annual temperature of the atmosphere of the Earth and World ocean. The average temperature on the Earth was increased by 0.6C. There are various reasons of global warming, such as human activities, natural events, increasing of gases, such as carbon dioxide in atmosphere and solar activity (Global warming). Nearly 200 countries have signed Kyoto Protocol and they must reduce four greenhouse gases, in order to struggle with global warming. There are several perspectives about effects of global warming on environment. In this essay will be considered the impacts and consequences of global warming . In the process, it will be clarified that there are positive and negative impacts of global warming.
To sum up, the EU drawn attention on climate changes and has essential goals to help other regions and countries to change the world. According to the Kyoto Protocol, the EU and other countries have big dreams about changing climate in positive way. That how the EU manages to accomplish the defined aims on the Kyoto Protocol depends on the EU leaders and Europeans also on the major emitting countries and other powerful world’s countries which have essential impact on climate changes.
(U.N.F.C.C.C.). Many people around the world are affected by our mother nature. The climate plays an important role in our farmlands, oceans, and animals. They are necessary for our survival. The Paris agreement helps control our climate to not destroy ourselves and our planet. The Paris Agreement not only focuses on climate control, but focuses on the safety for all. But there are many issues and controversies within the agreement.
In my opinion global warming will continue to occur, but we can do many things to slow it down. Personally I am very worried that we won’t make a change until it is too late and once we do there
