Google searches are becoming a cause of mistrials as jurors, after hearing testimony, ignore judges’ instructions, and go look up facts for themselves. We search for information we don 't even care about….” The basic knowledge we get from school or our surroundings do not stop us from googling something we are not sure of. We become dependent on technology to solve every problem we may come across of. At the same time we lack communication and stop interacting face to face. Social media, or web 2.0 began as an Internet based computer application or user-generated application that facilitates the use of social networks by connecting personal or business profiles with those of other individuals or companies. Issues that stem from parents being ignorant to what their children are posting online are cyberbullying and sexting which are common negativities that minors are subjected to in recent years. The topic of kids harassing other kids via social media has become a sensitive subject as well. Cyberbullying has become so out of control that the youth are starting to take their own lives because they cannot bear to deal with the hate. Teens like Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old who took his own life after being bullied physically at school and harassed online about his sexuality (Hughes). These types of problems could be prevented if parents were more aware of what exactly their kids were posting on social media and limited their access to the internet.
Over the past couple of decades, we are all aware that social media has had a great impact on us and the way we think. Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on a daily basis. It has been spreading propaganda on how we should live our lives, how to act, what’s right and wrong, what’s good for us and many more. It is double edge sword that hinders people’s abilities to think for their self, but has open such a vast world to share one another 's opinions in a matter of seconds on the internet or television.
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.

Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.
In our day to day lives we socialize and interact with many different types of people, including family, friends, colleagues, or even complete strangers. We use social media for finding romance, seeking employment, or getting advice. This is where social networking and social media come into play. Many people may think that the use of social media is making them more social and more interactive with society. But others question if that is really the case. It would only improve our society today if social media never existed to our knowledge. Our society today feels so connected with social media that it interferes with our lives making every task even harder with the temptations.

Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then.
