The American culture was developed right away when the first colonist landed in America whether Puritans or Pilgrims both valued prosperity, freedom, and democracy in their colonies. These values are still carried out today by our past presidents such as President Obama and President Bush and now with President Trump. Even more importantly is that we as the citizens of the United States continue to carry out these values in our lives whether for the common good or individual good. When the Puritans first came to American they wrote A Model of Christian Charity or also known as the Arbella Covenant. John Winthrop also discusses democracy in the Arbella Covenant. He is not as straight forward as Bradley but is more religious about the idea of democracy and clearly shows the unity that is to be had in the colony. Tocqueville talks about how he saw complete democracy in the colonial period. There was no notion of superiority over one person but everyone was held as equal. He goes on to write, “The independence of the township was the nucleus round which the local interests, passions, rights, and duties collected and clung. It gave scope to the activity of a real political life, thoroughly democratic and republican. The colonies still recognized the supremacy of the mother country; monarchy was still the law of the state; but the republic was already established in every township” (Tocqueville). The colonist where forming a democracy but still respecting the law of the crown. Democracy is still prevalent in America today and is a value that still is in the American culture.
