Although small businesses are responsible for nearly two-thirds of job growth in the United States economy, the government constantly harms them with new regulations. Not only do these regulations from the federal and state governments stifle the growth of small businesses, but they place the entire free-enterprise system in jeopardy. Small businesses cannot afford to hire lobbyists to fight for their protection, because they are typically operated by sole proprietorships and run on relatively low operating budgets. To be successful in their endeavors, small business owners need to focus on their business; any time spent not operating the business can harm their companies. However, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) provides a solution to this problem. NFIB gives small business owners a prominent voice in politics, while also providing member exclusive discounts on products and services that help their companies operate smoothly.

In 2010, twenty-five NFIB members were elected to the 112th Congress of the United States. Additionally, in the same year, NFIB joined 26 states in challenging of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as the lead plaintiff. NFIB was the only small business organization to challenge the Affordable Care Act in the unprecedented lawsuit. NFIB challenged the legislation of the act because they believed it would dramatically raise the costs of small businesses with over fifty employees. However, they lost the lawsuit, as the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Affordable Care Act. As the organization promised, they never gave up on their fight, and they have recently prevented premium increases among other burdens by delaying several taxes on health
