Language is a universal trait that every culture has, whether it is written or spoken, people around the world have a need to communicate with one another. Language reflects your background and where you come from, according to Fromkin, Rodman and Hyams, an accent is a regional phonological distinction (433). That being said, in the United States the most prevalent language is English but depending on the region, your language might sound different to other people. If someone from Wisconsin visited one of the southern states, they would definitely notice a drawl in a southerner’s language, whereas the native southerner would think the Wisconsin resident’s accent sounds nasally. She grew up speaking both Spanish and English fluently but I often observed her using code switching with her parents and siblings. Another example is her younger sister, she understands both Spanish and English but never speaks Spanish. Interestingly enough, when her father speaks to her in Spanish, she completely understands it and responds in English. It is very enjoyable to hear them all speak to each other in their own way, using both languages. Until now, I had no word to describe code switching because I thought it was just something that happened in my friend 's household. The use of slang between college students is apparent, but can be hard to notice if you are a student using these words. Students create slang for sex, dating, drinking, and just about everything else they might come into contact with on a daily basis. An example of this that I noticed immediately when I arrived on campus is the use of the word ‘lit’. In my hometown we did not use it but from what I concluded by looking at yik yak posts is that ‘lit’ means drunk or high. This chapter focused mainly on misconceptions and attempting to clarify those misconceptions about accents. In the opinion of linguists, accent is a difficult word to define. This is due to the fact that language has variation therefore when it comes to a person having an accent or not, there is no true technical distinction because every person has different phonological aspects to their way of speaking. However, when forced to define this word, it is described as “a way of speaking” (Lippi-Green, 2012, p.44). Although Lippi- Green identified the difficulty linguists have in distinguishing between accent, dialect, and another language entirely, they were able to construct a loose way of distinguishing. Lippi- Green states that an accent can be determined by difference in phonological features alone, dialect can be determined by difference in syntax, lexicon, and semantics alone, and when all of these aspects are different from the original language it is considered another language entirely (Lippi-Green, 2012).
Since the 1930’s until now, studies show that about 64% of kids and teens have been using slang terms in their school work. It is amazing what some of them are. Slang is used all of the time by almost all people and has changed a lot over the past decades. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses a child’s perspective to show how slang has changed from the 1930’s until today.

Style has been an integral component in the field of linguistics. Linguistic style refers to a person’s speaking pattern, which can include different features such as pace, pitch, intonation, syntactic patterns, etc. Styles of speech is learned, and is often influenced by location, gender, ethnicity, and age. As different cultures and sub-cultures arise, linguistic variations occur and different sociolinguistic styles come into being. Through these different study and friend groups, almost everyone is able to talk with each other in one way or another. The small scale off both the school and class size also help for one person to meet every other person around them. As one of my friends, Scott Noftsger, said, “I really like them except for the “knowing” of all of us of each other’s business.” This, again, shows the immense amount of communication among the students, with word of each other getting around very quickly, for better or for worse. Along with this though, many new abbreviations for words have come up in LCS that I did not understand when I came to the school from another. Words like “Charter,” “The Rock,” “The Park,” and “The Warden” each mean very specific things around LCS that came out of many inside events or jokes occurring around the students here. Although some other schools may use the same terms, the use them in different ways and mean different things by them then we do at Charter. There are many different dialects across the world. They can change depending on your region, your age or even your gender. Many people would react to a different dialect as wrong or they want to try and eliminate it. When in reality, both are correct. They just sound incorrect due to the fact they are not accustomed to hearing it. If English is just one language, why are there so many different ways to speak it? The study of dialects or the variations in language from one place to another provides the answers. In observing my own dialect, I have found three words or phrases I say or pronounce differently from the people around me. One is the pronunciation of the word ketchup. Two is the word used to describe a spinning maneuver preformed while driving a vehicle. Three is the normality of the question, “Do you have fry sauce?” in different states.
