As student senate representative, I represented the college of nursing on the senate council and stood for matters pertinent to the continued quality of education, affordability (Bill 31) and continued excellence throughout the university. Students already go through a lot at the university to pay tuition at the university so the impact of my voice in the Senate body was essential to maintaining the continued affordability at the University of Manitoba. I was a firm voice in standing up for issues and opposing issues that I felt would have a negative impact on the students in any way which would limit their chances to excel academically
On the building bridges committee, I learnt a lot about the numerous struggles individuals had to go through
After reading the segment of your exposition on the four spheres of political action in nursing one particular detail drew my attention and that was that an organization is not strictly delineated as a facility we are employed by but also as a group of interest. With that in mind, it would be imperative to recognize numerous committees established in the VA to improve and regulate nursing care. For example, I have been part of Veterans' Education group which is focused on maintaining updated information resources available to patients as well as organizing beneficial events to disseminate vital information necessary for prevention and maintenance of wellness. Furthermore, I cannot omit the most valuable to my profession the Certified Diabetes

Because of this, I was selected to Party Secretary and, along with three other appointees, was left to organize the debate. The four of us worked tirelessly, and on the day of the debate, it payed off. It is one of my prouder honors to say that that we four appointees had kept five hundred of our peer organized and in check throughout an entire two hour long political debate. Looking back on this, I realized how much I learned from the experience. I had learned to succeed but I had also learned to fail. I overcame a discouraging loss and ultimately made it farther than I think I would have had I won the senatorial election. I also learned to work with others. Those three appointees and I were given a task that would have been impossible to do alone. However, through collaboration and hard work, we were able to pull it off, surprising even ourselves. All that I learned about myself that week has helped my through life since, and I believe it will allow me to succeed at Penn
These events have strengthened me mentally, spiritually, and educationally. Regardless of what occurs in life, at work or in school, I have the ability to overcome the obstacles and the strength of mind, a compassionate heart and the knowledge to succeed in any task I undertake.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on in media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians support staff. Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing in university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature student who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study
That saying, everything they do has a lasting and major effect. They participate directly, indirectly, and behind the scenes with the patient, family, hospital staff, and community. Going along with Gardner, nurses have the “intelligence to observe, validate, and network to articulate messages advocating for health care reform values that resonate with Republican, Democratic, and Independent Congressional members” (Gardner, 2014). With large size in numbers, nurses can effectively participate in health related politics to improve the healthcare system. Regardless, at the end of the day the patient is what matters most, meaning the nurse needs to ensure care for everyone – people below the poverty line, immigrants, and other minorities
Working with the clients at Silver Saddle, facilitating anger management group and being able to identify the clients needs have been the greatest experience that has had a large impact on my learning. Working with clients helped me set a professional standpoint while maintain healthy boundaries with my clients, which is something I struggled with because I wanted to be more like a mom to the clients. Talking with my field instructor helped me establish more clear boundaries, which is something that’s very import as a social worker so this impacted my learning. Having the ability to address my client’s needs while co-facilitating
These experiences have helped me to see and embrace the differences of others. My Hispanic culture has allowed me to become a collectivist, family oriented individual. I put others first and care about what will benefit the majority. My previous volunteer experiences within my community has also shaped my choices. I participated in Flip for Autism, a gymnastics event for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. This event opened my eyes to the many great accomplishments and limitlessness of those with disabilities and furthermore confirmed my professional

It took me eighteen years to realize what an extraordinary influence my mother has been on my life. She' s the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions about which artist she would most want to have her portrait painted by (Sargent), the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of community leader who has a seat on the board of every major project to assist Washington' s impoverished citizens. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit.
I want to be a member of Student Senate because, while the school is in the right direction, improvements can still be made. As a freshman, I want to be able to represent my peers in a positive way. I recognize the importance of the Student Senate, and will put in my best efforts. Freshmen can get swept under the rug, and I believe I could give them a voice. I want to participate in the bettering of this school, and really try to make a difference. I have the desire to be involved, and make decisions that will benefit the school as a whole. I hope to give students the best high school experience possible, specifically making the freshmen’s first year enjoyable.
A nursing legacy: political activities at the turn of the century. AORN Journal. November 1999, vol. 70, no. 5. Magnussen, L. (1998).
While there are many things standing in my way, my experiences have prepared me. My mother’s kidney disease shows me the importance of being financially prepared for the unexpected. My dad’s hard work and sacrifice has shown me how to be a hard-working woman and to put others before myself. And most importantly, I have learned that no matter a person’s race, gender, or class, you never truly know a person’s
Issues and trends in the nursing profession are constantly changing due to discoveries in technology and research, changes in reimbursement and legislation, and the changing needs of our population; in fact the only constant in healthcare is change. This course has provided me with a foundation and better understanding of the need for higher education to empower nurses to become leaders and help shape the future of the nursing profession. Nurses are the “backbone” of healthcare and this is becoming more evident with the changes we are currently seeing in the healthcare industry.
