The Principles of Interpersonal Communication

Communication is a natural occurrence between all beings. As we communicate naturally, we concentrate on verbal speech to talk. Our bodies on the other hand give out signals as part of our communication. When we communicate, body language is expressed with intentional and unintentional signs. Some examples are;
• The shrugging and slumping of shoulders
• Using hand movements
• Raising and lowering of eye brows
• Facial expressions
• Sighing
Schmidt (2004) stated a nod of the head or a raised eye brow may be all that is asked of a listener. We need to be on the look out for implicit requests for more information that include honest feedback action to fulfill a need. One thing is for certain. The more precise we can be about what we want from another person the more likely we are to get what we want (pg2).
Verbal information is important to express the feelings and emotions which are continuously operating with-in us. However, Schmidt (2004) adds, be positive and clear. Stating our requests clearly and friendly,
“May I have a strawberry ice cream please” Will either get us what we want or information that our request is not available? (pg 1).
To use clear, positive, communication is important and to be professional with the interview remembering communication is irreversible.

The title of chapter one is called Introduction to Interpersonal communication. This chapter is mainly talking about interpersonal communication among materials that are very important to us such as interpersonal communication to our life, interpersonal communication and social media and interpersonal communication principles. They are many more that was talked about in the chapter put those three were the main thing that stood out to me. In this discussion paper, I am going to talk about the things that grab my attention while looking over my notes and by looking over my chapter. Those materials are the interpersonal communication to our life, interpersonal communication and social media and interpersonal communication competence.
In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.
In part one, Petersen paints a picture of how he became interested in the topic of communication. He also describes major problems that all communicators have in common. Since he grew up in an environment full of communication deficiencies, it drove him to clarify issues that were common to all communicators. One of the foundational concepts to Petersen’s book is the nature of communication. Petersen called communication the lubrication designed to keep functions of stomach, heart, and head working separately and together. The stomach is the source of feeling words, the heart is the source of perspective words, and the head is the source of our perception of facts. Without these three elements working together, communication becomes deficient. In my experience and understanding how this concept of thinking and feeling affects mine and others people relationships goes a long way towards reducing disagreement and disconnection.
When communicating thoughts, ideas, or instructions, it is important that the receiver of this information has a clear understanding. Allowing them to repeat or rephrase the communication will let the receiver know that you care that they truly understand. Take into consideration the many differing factors that may influence the understanding or misunderstanding, like ethnicity, personality, and emotions. As a receiver of communication, use the same feedback practices. Repeat the communication and ask for clarification if necessary.
There are all different types of communication that people will use through out their life. The most important type of communication is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication differs from other forms of communication in that there are few participants involved, the participants are in close proximity to each other, there are many sensory channels used, and feedback is immediate. Interpersonal communication is the information received from listening to what someone else is saying. Interpersonal communication always uses intonation, diction and enunciation to give meaning to information. Intonation, diction and enunciation sometimes give more meaning to what is being said than the actual words themselves. In the following paragraphs, I will explain to the reader the importance of interpersonal communication in business.
Communication is a vital skill in all facets of life and all occupations. Before a person begins work, they first interview with the employer, where their communication skills are made apparent. These skills are vital to daily success in the workplace, whether they are used in direct communication or indirectly through the written word. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day.
