In Star Wars: A New Hope, Darth Vader and the Emperor, users of the dark side of the force, are evil villains and Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi, users of the light side of the force, are the heroes. Does this automatically mean that the dark side is evil and the light side is good, though? There is no disputing that Darth Vader and the emperor are both evil men. Darth Vader destroys Alderaan with one simple command and regularly chokes his commanding officers to death. But, this is just one example of a man who has abused the power of the Dark side for evil (Star Wars). It is clear from the beginning of Star Wars that Dark Side is very powerful, possibly more so than the light side. This is evidenced by the fact the Emperor and Darth Vader
rule the galaxy and no Jedi can beat them in battle. It is also clear that these two men are extremely ambitious and love power, for why else would they have conquered the galaxy? It seems that the Dark Side is really less about being evil than it is about being extremely ambitious and hungry for success. Desire and ambition are not inherently bad things. Many good things come about because of these characteristics in people, they just need to be controlled so as not to lead to evil (Star Wars). I hope next time you watch Star Wars: A New Hope, you can remember that it is not the dark side that is necessarily evil, it is the men using it. This idea can be related to the notion that guns do not kill people, other people kill people. In the same respect, the dark side is not evil, Darth Vader and the Emperor are evil. It is unfair to lump a potentially good side of the force in with these two evil men (Star Wars).
Both also have a sort of supernatural force helping them, giving them an advantage over ordinary people. Luke learns the ways of the "force" which about three other people have mastered: Darth Vader who is evil, Obi-Wan his mentor, and Yoda (who he does not know yet). Bruce learns the ways of advanced ancient Ninjitsu and the ways of being one with the shadows. The two of them are also both very limited in their allies fighting against a world of evil. Luke is contained to Obi-Wan, Chewbacca, Han Solo, and eventually Leah. Bruce is limited to the few uncorrupt people in his city, Alfred, Mr. Fox, Jim Gordon, and Rachel. During the ordeal, both hero's have a long line of conflict that they must deal with. Bruce has to save Rachel, escape his on fire mansion, fight Ra's al Ghul, and then stop the city from going crazy from the gas. Luke must save Leia, escape a trash compacter, watch Obi-Wan die, escape Darth Vader's station, and finally come back to destroy it. A last similarity is that both hero's rewards made them realize what they were actually destined for. Luke
The nature of evil lies in its ability to enchant the beholder by veiling its true intentions, and using mankind’s greeds, desires and passions to corrupt the most pure of heart. Tolkien uses contrasts of light and dark, and good and evil to show the nature of evil in Middle-Earth. Before Gollum finds the ring we can see how easily the ring was able to corrupt him, because he stops looking to the light/good, and instead his gaze focuses on looking downward into the dark as he becomes more corruptible (51-52). There is a connection in Fangorn Forest as the trees in the day time are dulled by the light, but at night when there is no light they are more aware, and prone to do evil deeds (118). There is a correlation between evil and the fading
...or feels the right to be evil but no other person than oneself should believe it. To assume something is like making up a story. Destruction could also mean death, and death is the only way one ends evil. Grendel is destroyed because good and evil work together, Beowulf thinks he is doing his society well and Grendel was the evil person who all feared. Each and every person has an evil and good side in themselves.
The line between good and evil is non-existent; there is simply one large grey area consisting of (distinct) factors such as intent and perspective. In The Wizard of Oz, the wizard’s actions were difficult to perceive considering these two factors. The Wizard, the most powerful and prominent character in the land, was both feared and respected by its inhabitants. He was the saviour and leader of Oz, protecting them with his magic and bringing them together as their ruler, however he let down Dorothy and her friends, and was therefore not a wholly good character. Despite his respectable reputation, the Wizard used others’ vulnerabilities to his benefit, he was a questionable leader, and he was deceitful. The Wizard abused his power, and therefore did not posses the qualities of a good leader.
The Conflict over the Star Wars Defense System Presently, the threat of missiles is very dangerous. The missiles include biological, chemical, and of course, nuclear missiles. Our nation, the US, is one of the richest and most powerful nations on the world. Since we are so strong, many countries threaten us and endanger the citizens. Lately, a system called the Star Wars SDI was initialized during the Reagan Administration.
“All human beings are commingled out of good and evil” Robert Louis Stevenson once said. In this one of a kind novel entitled The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by the wonderful Robert Louis Stevenson. Throughout this literary work, the idea of good vs evil as well as your dark side being tough to handle is greatly expressed. Which is why the theme of this novel is good versus evil and having trouble controlling your dark side. Now some people may believe that your good side almost always triumphs over your bad side mnly becasue thats what wither see or hear about, the yin and yang sign for good and evil is perfectly balanced, and some others may believe that a person cannot have two completely opposite personalities. The meaning of good and evil and the difference between them could be very confusing and hard to differ. The difference between good and evil can be deteriorated in someone's character and choices. If you continuously chose violent, evil things your character might be considered evil or bad. The Lottery by Shirey Jackson is a story that you figure out the good and evil in the characters.
ship it is clear which ship they are on, this is because of the robots
XVIII. We learn that there are not only Siths and Jedis. Name this order and one known member of the New Republic era. Grey Jedis are force users using both the dark and the light side. Mace Windu is known to have used both.
Luke's Three Dimensions of Power. Power serves to create power. Powerlessness serves to re-enforce. powerlessness"(Gaventa, 1980:256).
To answer this question, it is first important to differentiate between evil/dark and good/light. What can truly be considered evil and good? It ultimately depends on the situation at hand. A person is walking down the street and sees a malefactor beating up a young girl. The person proceeds to beat up the malefactor. Both the malefactor and person are hurting another person but one is considered good and the other is considered evil. Anything can be evil and anything can be good but until the situation is explained it is neither good nor evil.
Author Idowu Koyenikan said “There is no denying that there is evil in this world but the light will always conquer the darkness.”Good hook, I liked how you referenced another author During the Anglo-Saxon period ? In the epic Beowulf, the theme Good v.s. Evil is developed, explored and prominent throughout the entire story.
There are two sides in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the good side, and
"Truth, beauty, and goodness are not eternal, objective realities which man discovers, but are the creative products of the human mind as it exercises its 'will-to-power'. In other words, man is a creator of values." (Nietzsche) So what is good and evil, but that defined by man and therefore a purely subjective concept. Could we, society, have one without the other? By determining what is good, we in turn determine what is evil. How do we know what they are; that is if they really exist? One must first try to define what good and evil are before attempting to question their existence.
Same way we perceive good according to action is the same with bad. Although a soldier who fights for his country is good, killing in itself is bad. This goes to show that sometimes there is no being good without being bad also. So what is good and bad? The easiest way to describe good and bad is, to be good is to do the right thing, to be bad is doing the wrong thing.
