The Conflict over the Star Wars Defense System
Presently, the threat of missiles is very dangerous. The missiles
include biological, chemical, and of course, nuclear missiles. Our
nation, the US, is one of the richest and most powerful nations on the
world. Since we are so strong, many countries threaten us and endanger
the citizens. Lately, a system called the Star Wars SDI was
initialized during the Reagan Administration. The system involves
lasers that will fry the chips in missiles. That will cause the
missile to stop in its flight and not detonate. Now, it is being
researched again. But even though the Star Wars system seems flawless,
it shouldn^t be employed. The system uses up a huge sum of money. It
will cost about $1 trillion to set it up. Regular ground-based missile
defenses are almost 10 times cheaper. The nation should protect its
citizens with all their money, but the Star Wars system was never
tested. The lasers have been used many times in laboratories, but the
whole assemblage can malfunction before we even try it. People should
know what type of defense system is protecting them and should know if
it will defend them fully. The country^s taxes pay for the system, but
some people may not want the money they pay to be used for violent
reasons. While we are making the strongest weapons we could, the
nation can do better things that will help not only us but the world.
Too many weapons will cause us to get greedy and too powerful. Many
other countries despise us. Countries like Russia, China, and even
small ones like North Korea are powerful and the US doesn^t have really
good relations with them. They may be stalwart, but they still want
our technology and power. Most of the countries are not as wealthy as
us. Some are also hostile. They wish to obtain our weaponry. If we
do employ the SW system, it may violate international peace treaties
because we might build the weapon without their consent. Already, the
US is involved in battles between countries like Iraq and Yugoslavia.
The system can worsen our relations with other countries. The danger
from those hostile countries is near. They may prepare to bomb us
since they loathe us. Nuclear missiles can be launched at our capital
and major cities any moment without us knowing it. The only thing is
that the countries don^t have missiles that will travel this far.

If a nuclear war were to break out between the Soviet Union and the United States, virtually every major city could be destroyed in a matter of hours. This report will take a look at Vesuvius’ most prolific eruption in 79 AD. The geologic setting of the mountain, precursor activity, and the impact the eruption had on the surrounding populations and towns will all be detailed. Along with these details, this report will also look at the further history of Vesuvius’s explosive past by detailing its eruption cycle. Finally, the current state of Vesuvius and the possible danger the current population living near the mountain could face should it erupt explosively again.
One of the most controversial laws in the efforts to reduce crime has been the "three-strikes" laws that have been enacted. This law, which is already in twenty-seven states, requires that offenders convicted of three violent crimes be sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole. The law is based on the idea that the majority of felonies are committed by about 6% of hard core criminals and that crime can be eliminated by getting these criminals off the streets. Unfortunately, the law fails to take into account its own flaws and how it is implemented.
...e data I gathered from both sides of the argument, I have come to a conclusion on whether the law is just. Personally, I feel these laws are not as harsh as some people have made them out to be. We must tackle criminals of any kind to maintain a good society. How can we have this good society if habitual offenders keep polluting it? Deterrence seems positively correlated with the facts I presented in the argument that supported the Three Strikes law. Crime went down with the implementation of these laws. My overall thoughts are that if a person cannot grow and learn from their mistakes to become better individuals, then they must be taken off our streets. Criminals are just that C R I M I N A L S. Certain crimes serve as stepping stones to more violent crimes. The threat of these long sentences may stop a second time offender from committing their third offense. This law can help reduce the prison population by serving as a deterrent to these potential repeat offenders.
Some unusual scenarios have come about due to these laws, particularly in California; some defendants have been given sentences of 25 years to life for such petty crimes as shoplifting golf clubs or stealing a slice of pizza from a child on the beach or a double sentence of 50 years to life for stealing nine video tapes from two different stores while child molesters, rapists and murderers serve only a few years. As a result of some of these scenarios the three strikes sentences have prompted harsh criticism not only within the United States but from outside the country as well (Campbell). The three strikes laws is a legal system that many states have adapted that specifies if one commits three felonies then they automatically receive a life sentence (Cite 19). While they vary from state to state, currently 28 states have the three strikes law in place. The problem is the three felonies do not have to be violent. For instance, someone who may have stolen a felony amount of goods, forged government paperwork, and got caught with a large amount of drugs could be facing life in prison for their three separate felonies (“Three Strikes”). While this law was created to keep people who really deserve to spend their life in prison locked up, it often affects other non-violent criminals who have made some bad decisions. The statistics are staggering as well. Currently out of all the people who are in incardinated under the three strikes law, less than half are in for violent crimes (“Three Strikes”). America needs to seriously reevaluate their three strikes law. It does not necessarily have to be taken completely off the law book, as it is does have it place for some offenders.
