The Positive Effects of Tumblr on Teen Culture
Teenagers use social media for many different reasons. They use it to feel deemed worthy by their peers, to post personal opinions, and to share their daily life. They spend more time with their phones, laptops, iPads, etc. than they do with their family, friends, boyfriends and girlfriends. Tumblr is a popular blogging website/app that has gained popularity in the last few years. Tumblr has a positive effect on teen culture because unlike Facebook and other forms of social media, it promotes creative expression in a non-judgmental environment.
Tumblr was created in 2007 in New York City by a 26-year-old named David Karp. Tumblr is a blogging platform that makes it easier to post videos, audio, words, social bookmarks, photos, and even other people's blog posts into your own blog, and share it with other people. It’s the people on Tumblr who really make up the site. There are fandoms and gifs (moving pictures) that people send around. You can find almost anything on Tumblr and there are no ads currently on Tumblr. It is more photo/ blog based than Facebook. If you post things on Tumblr, you generally don’t care how many notes (likes) or reblogs you get. Tumblr attracts people who want a deeper personal connection to people similar to them. As opposed to Facebook and Twitter where people go to feed their egos with “likes”, “retweets”, and how many “friends” they have. According to “61% of teenagers consider Tumblr their favorite social network.” (MediaBistro.com). Based on this information, teens prefer Tumblr to other forms of Social Media.

Tumblr is defined by Pearson (2009) as a social-networking site which is a photo-blog platform which enables its users to post anything that they wish. David Karp created it because he wanted something less verbose yet it mediates between the capabilities of Facebook and Wordpress: Facebook enables its users to post photos and “like” them while Wordpress is the best medium to start a blog. Karp’s idea became successful because Tumblr allows the users to have an account, or as they call it the “tumble blog” which permits them to post texts, photos, quotations, links, videos and the like. The difference between Tumblr and the aforementioned social networking sites is its capability to reblog or repost another user’s posts without the permission of the original owner of the post. According to Tumblr itself, an average Tumblr user reposts at least 3 posts per month. According to Alexa.com, Tumblr was cited as the 11th most popular website in the Philippines.
“Perhaps, Americans have moved from a print-based culture to an aural/visual one, preferring electronic media for information, distraction, and entertainment” (Media and Popular Culture, 426). In the past few years social media has been a staple to the everyday life of our society. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Tumblr have become the most used websites and apps used every day. Every site is different and every site has its similarities, but there are a few elements that make them better than the other websites. There are always back and forth battles from users claiming one site is better than the other. Two websites always being compared are Tumblr and Twitter. Both sites offer a wide variety of different things to do while on their site, but they also offer some of the same qualities.
In the article," Teenagers and Social Networking- It Might Actually Be Good for Them," writer Clive Thompson discusses the benefits of teens using social media networks to their advantage. Thompson argues that teens making use of social media carries many advantages, which include social and networking skills. Clive Thompson is able to successfully argue his claim on why social media might actually be fitting for teens with the use of analytical devices such as the emotions fear and guilt, general facts and expert testimonies, reliable sources, and his qualifications. All of which display his knowledge on the subject at hand.

The ultimate question that comes to the mind of mjourity of youth is WHATS the point when it comes to being able to express your self in real lifewbecause they have already depicted them selkves as the ideal person they want to be and think very highly oifi them selevs. Hence, social media acts as a fuel to the ego of young people where they ideally think it is okay tik show them sleves as perfect online instead of real life. This exhibits the behavior of someone who cannot live on without knowing the newest scoop. Teenagers are using these applications to feel connected with each other, even if it goes to the point where it is basically meaningless, or harmful to their health. Most adolescents use social media to avoid having a sense of disconnection with their peers and to have someone to communicate with and share their experiences.
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand, parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media allows students to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and for many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bullying can affect social health. Social media networks can give out personal information. Social media sites such as Facebook are one of the most popular social media sites that has 700,000-750,000 members joining each day.
Recent advancements in technology have created a new form of communication. We call this new type of communication social media. Some of the big names in social media are Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. Most people today use some form of social media on a daily basis. Social media is most popular amongst adolescents. According to a poll conducted by Infographic, nine out of ten teenagers have used social media. Whenever a new technological advancement occurs there is concern over how it will affect society. In the case of social media, the concern is greatest for adolescents. So, how does social media effect adolescents? Social media can have both negative and positive effects. Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
It is known that youth are positively affected with the benefits of social media in connection with positive behavioral outcomes. Several studies have mentioned a number of benefits that a youth receives out from being a social media user. Furthermore, the youth uses Social Networking Sites to make their own profiles and connect to even wider networks of friends (Ahn, 2011)
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
Social media or cancer? Just like cancer, social media slowly withers away people’s brains, especially in teenagers, when they consume almost everything they read. Social media has grown exponentially while attracting the young minds of teens and molding them without teens knowing. They latch on to things that they feel comfortable with, because they are still trying to find who they really are. Today, social media is used by almost every teenager in America. Sites like Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, and Facebook can affect them in a negative way, making them feel worse about themselves or even changing who they really are. Social media can seem harmless to many teens, but it can actually hurt them and cause mental health issues.
There is no secret that a modern day teenager’s life is built around the usage of technology. As a result of society’s heavy reliance on technology, social media has become popular amongst people who are “technologically advanced.” Though there is a wide variety of social sites that can be accessed through modern day technology, a few have become very popular. Social sites which have become widely popular among teens include Instagram, Tumblr, and Snapchat. These social networking sites provide instant social connection and emotional support while letting teens post and send pictures of their everyday life. Many teens look towards social media for emotional support and social acceptance. The continual usage of these sites are negatively impacting the self- esteem of teenagers worldwide since they heavily rely on social medias to portray images of what they believe is acceptable for the society we live in.
In the twenty -first century, teenagers live in a life of social networking and life’s online. It’s hard to believe how much the world has changed over the decades, especially in technology. Technology helps people to contact relatives and friends from long distance more easily and conveniently. People can now talk to each other from everywhere in the world simply through chat and video calls. By time, internet connections have spread throughout households and social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram has increased gradually. However, the internet and several modern technologies have wasted many times and has hurt the society. Social media plays such a big role in people’s lives that some people couldn’t even imagine
