Paterniti’s tone throughout the story seemed very soft and calm because he is writing about a delicate situation that occurred in history. He is extremely detailed and figurative with his use of language. What made Paterniti stand out from the other writers that we have previously read, is his opening paragraph. I read the opening of the story at least three times before I understood that he was describing the place where the crash would occur. If I had to base the story off the opening, a plane crash would have been my last guess. His word choice was also difficult. I looked up a lot of words that I did not know. I was invested in reading this story because this is my first time hearing about the crash. I like how Paterniti write about some of the people who were involved and effected by the crash. He built a life to make sure his daughter was afforded every opportunity, and her life was cut short. This caused him to drink, which caused him to leave his wife. It broke my heart. My favorite memory he had of her was when she was six years old and wanted a gold fish. That was precious, but sad at the same time. I thought it was kind of selfish of the mother to ask the father to stop his memory of his daughter at the airport. I understand that that was probably her way of grieving, but she was unable to comfort her husband because of that promise.
