This essay is about analyzing the personal management competencies which are essential in carrying out a management role and also helps reflect on my own personal experience which would help recognize my strengths and weaknesses and develop on those. For the purpose of this essay, I have used three theories of managing competencies. Mintzberg’s theory talks about the roles of managers and a model of managing which categorized the ways in which managing takes place (Mintzberg 2009) Boyatzis theory talks about three main competencies which are emotional cognitive, emotional intelligence and social intelligence (Boyatzis 2009) and lastly ‘a holistic model of professional competency’ by (Cheetham & Chivers 1996) which are of three types; knowledge, functional, personal or behavioral competence and values or ethical competence.

Based on my experiences, I have observed tremendous pressure when it comes to situations where you have to deliver within deadlines, stay onward in the competitive world of business and making sure the quality of output is not compromised. To be able to do all this it is important to identify one’s competencies and weaknesses.

Management is a very tough job in today’s world of ambiguity, uncertainty, stiff competition and threatening environment. Mintzberg(2013, P.44) stated that managing combines all these skills, like leading ,doing, thinking, and deciding and more, together, not applying individually. A good manger should be able to mater all these skills to fulfill the job of management. But the thing is what helpful competencies should a manager have to be able to fulfill? Mintzberg stated his own theory which is managing can be known from on three main aspects : information, people, and action. For the information aspect, a manager should be able to communicate and control; for the people aspect, a manager should be able to lead and link; and for action aspect, a manager should be able to do and deal. Page and Wilson (1994) after reviewing 337 citations regarding competencies, defined it as “the skills, abilities, and personal characteristics required by an „effective‟ or „good‟ manager”. The point to note about this definition is the inclusion of directly observable and testable competencies, such as knowledge and skills, and the less assessable competencies related to personal characteristics or personal competencies.
Management can be defined as the ability to handle or direct with a degree of skill, to make and keep compliant, to treat with care, and to exercise executive, administrative, and supervisory direction of a business (Kinnes 2004). Effective business skills are imperative to provide the best quality service to people. Typically, companies focus on profit, market share or growth, but in order to maintain productivity, first-class management skills are essential. Management skills are not easy to come across, as they are hard to learn and quantify. Most managers come from within an organization, as it is imperative to send employees through management skills courses.
The purpose of this essay is to highlight the importance of managerial skills. A management process is a line of activities and procedures such as planning, deciding and evaluating. We would be using an article titled What Great Managers by Marcus Buckingham as a base of discussion working on points that was overlooked and missed out though the report.
According to the study of this course, I have learned many useful management skills and I feel like these skills will be applied to my future career development. When working on the self- assessment tests, I found myself fall into the category of the ISTJ personality types, which as illustrated by Myers Briggs, is the type of personality that is conscientious, considerate, and helpful. Personality traits such as honest, dutiful, practical and responsible are my strengths; personality traits such as stubborn, insensitive and poor communication skill are my weaknesses. Related to the knowledge I have learned in the course I believe both strengths and weakness will have influence to my future career development. In this reflection paper, I will demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses that may place the most influence on my way of success.
