When you are growing up in a stereotypical neighborhood, you are a minority of some sort. It is hard to overcome those comments that are being said about you. In the story “The Parsley Garden” written by William Saroyan, demonstrates that once you work for the things you want, you cherish and value them more rather than not caring. William illustrates this by reporting the life of a young boy named Al Condraj. He is demonstrating that stealing comes with a great consequence, and by showing that going against your morals will break you down mentally and drive you to do the correct thing. In ¨The Parsley Garden¨, Saroyan signals that every action has an equal or opposite response. When something bad is done it gives you consequences that come …show more content…
Even though he knew he did not have any money to obtain such item he still entered the store. Al Condraj was then in route of stealing the hammer when a man snatches him by the arm and accompanies him to the consequences he will be facing. The store owner lets him go, as long as he doesn't repeat this same mistake. Al Condraj is then relieved, but very angry because he felt humiliated of the actions he made. Taking actions without processing them through, can bring plenty of consequences. Saroyan will soon learn to do the correct thing throughout his life by making morals. Though it may take a while for them to get that message through, the conversation Al Condraj had with his mother referring about the incident that had happened earlier, he felt like he left himself down by making the wrong choice. He wasn't satisfied with what had happened, so decided to take action and do something about it. He had many ways to either do the right thing and work for the hammer or go in the store and try and stealing it again. This was when his actions either taught him a lesson and helped him become a better person for himself or make this a habit and let him be insubordinate. In the novel “The Outsiders,” people are stereotyped just by how they look or where they live. For example when Randy was talking to Ponyboy. Randy told Ponyboy he would never thought a greaser would save those kids from the fire. He thought that just by how he looks and what he’s heard about them. Another example is, “It seemed funny to me that socs-if these girls were any example were just like us”(37). Ponyboy and Johnny thought these girls would be like what they thought socs were,
In Cheryll Cashin’s article, “Won’t You Not Be My Neighbor” discusses the sociology behind separatism of race in neighborhoods. Cashin starts off discussing her own experience with buying a home and the neighborhood she chose. Delving further into her own investigation, she realized that there was major separatism between different neighborhoods. These neighborhoods would have correlating traits depending on the percentage of white or black people who lived in that area. Cashin found that when there was a high percentage of white people living in the neighborhood, the housing cost were higher, education was better, socioeconomic status is improved, etc. Cashin then traces the reasons as to why people tend to choose to live in these non-diverse neighborhoods. Cashin argues that it stems from unconscious past racial experiences. White people tend to want to stick to what they find comforting,

Looking back on my own stereotypes towards another group had happened when I was in grade school. A stereotype is a negative belief or image towards a certain social group. I have always thought Asian Americans had always strict parents and were born with mathematical skills. When I was in the third grade, there was an Asian American student name May, who always had the right answers. I never bullied May, because my parents didn’t raise me to be a bully, but I had witnessed my fellow classmates picked on May. I had a fear of going near an Asian American’s hold, because of experience in the fifth grade.
Stereotypes are exaggerated beliefs usually associated with a group of people and based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Stereotypes generally begin with a particular belief about an undesirable characteristic of group. One of the dysfunctions of stereotyping is prejudice (Intro to Sociology, pg 262-263). Prejudice is everywhere. When we look upon prejudice, it's through every aspect of society. J.J. Cole states that, when she became into adulthood and graduated high school, she realize that people were having issues of disrespect base upon their race or ethnicity, including with their gender, likelihood, and their life
