What are tattoos and why do so many people get them? Who made them so popular? It’s not something that’s just done in America. Tattooing is a worldwide practice that dates back to ancient times. What used to be a ritual of ranking is now a common practice that people do today if you ask them why they got it, everyone would give you a different answer. A tattoo is a permanent ink design in the skin applied by needles or a temporary dyed design. The word “tattoo” originated from the word “tatau” which is from Polynesian language. Although the word has an origin, the act of tattooing itself does not. It has been done all over the world in every continent. Tattoo shops were said to first start during the Edo period in Japan from 1804 to 1868 (DeMello and Margo “Inked” 603). Tattoo shops didn’t arrive to the Western world until the 1850s. When they first came to the U.S., tattoo shops were near or inside of different urban locations ranging from barbershops, to bars (DeMello and Margo 603-604). Today, tattoo shops aren’t attached to any other business and they’re also much more sanitary than what they used to be. When tattoo shops first opened up, the sanitation levels were very low. The same needles were used between customers and the workers used bleach or Lysol to clean their materials (DeMello and Margo 604). Today, workers use disposable needles and change their ink when working with different customers. In my narrative, the tattoo shop I went to was very modern and sanitary. A tattoo is a work of art, just like painting on a canvas and every artist has a different reason for drawing their work of art the same way that the viewers having a different wait of perceiving their work of art. I got my rose tattoo because one, I had just turned 18 and always wanted one for a while. But roses are also my favorite flower and I think they are very beautiful and since getting it done wasn’t as pricey as it usually is, I decided to do it.
