Human beings can be unpleasant, selfish and inconsiderate in their treatment of other people. Also, the manifestations of human aggression and egocentric attitude together with the mass destruction effected by War propelled Sigmund Freud to believe that people are aggressive by nature ( ). Humans habitually act to benefit other people in an act exemplified as prosocial behavior. Behaviors such as sharing personal resources, helping someone in need, volunteering time, effort, expertise and cooperating with others in an attempt to achieve a common goal ( ). Although people are often in need of help and act of kindness from another human being, however, the decision to help someone in need of aid is not a simple or straightforward decision as it might seem. Also, social psychologists have long been concerned in when and why some individuals help others while some decline to help. Although the evidence for the inhibitory effect confounding, there are also counter-examples which exemplifies individuals demonstrating pro-social behavior in the presence of others. Hence, while the bystander effect can have a negative impact on prosocial behavior, altruism and heroism, researchers have identified factors that can help people overcome this predisposition and increase the probability that they will engage in helping act. Lantane and Darley (1968) proposed a five-step psychological process model to account for the bystander effect. These processes include observing that a critical situation is current, interpret the circumstance as a crisis, generate a feeling of individual obligation, believe that we have the adequate skills necessary to succeed, and finally reaching a conscious decision to render help (hellen et al )

“Altruism and Indirect Reciprocity: The Interaction of Person and Situation in Prosocial Behavior” was based significantly off of the findings of the study done by David De Cremer called “Why Prosocials Exhibit Greater Cooperation then Proselfs: The Roles of Social Responsibility and Reciprocity.” Both studies preliminarily tested the college students with a social value orientation test to classify the participants as either prosocial or proself. Next, the participants participated in series of “games” that differed in each study. De Cremer used scenarios that allowed the participant to decide how many chips (a made up source of perceived value) they wanted to contribute to either a group or partner, followed by an inquiry as to how responsible they felt to “further the collective interest.” This study aimed to understand the different behaviors and feelings associated with being prosocial or proself. For example, it was found that a prosocial feel more socially responsible and want to restore equality in outcomes of situations, therefore increasing their tendency to behave cooperatively. The “Altruism and Indirect Reciprocity” study went through scenarios in which the participants would participate in “dictator games” in which they were given two opportunities to help another person, once in public the other in private. Latane and Darley (1968) investigated the phenomenon known as the bystander effect and staged an emergency situation where smoke was pumped into the room participants was in. Results showed that 75% of participants who were alone reported the smoke, whereas only 38% of participants working in groups of three reported (Latane & Darley, 1968). Their findings provide evidence for the negative consequence of the diffusion of responsibility. Bystander effect is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to people who don’t offer any help in a situation to a victim when others are around. The research study by Abbate, Ruggieri, & Boca (2013) has shown that helping behavior can be easily primed. Many researchers and social psychologists over the years, have been studying how knowledge is activated in individual’s memory and how that information shapes and guides emotions, impressions, and judgments. For example studies by Bargh, Chen, and Burrows' (1996) mentioned in Abbate, Ruggieri, & Bocas’ (2013) work, explains the perspective on behavior and trait concepts that activate relative behavior. There studies concluded that unconscious behavioral priming is real that includes different mechanisms from the typically assumed cause of effect.
Bystander Apathy and Effect are both a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a victim when other people are present. The probability of help is inversely related to the number of bystanders. Bystanders can be in many things as in bullying for example. Bystander happens around everyday (Wikipedia Contributors).
Most people just complain about the wickedness and the corruption of society, and they do not realize that they are contributing to the problem by doing nothing to stop it and just being mere bystanders. Bystanders are those individuals that do not take part in events despite being present during those times. In spite of the consequences that it entails being a bystander, this kind of behavior is usually driven by the desire to avoid problems. In order to avoid this misleading mentality, many philosophers and social activists have advocated against people being bystanders. An individual should not be a bystander because being a bystander is morally incorrect, inhuman, and harmful.
This led Grant and Dutton to observe three main things. The first being reciprocity; A sense of obligation to help that person who helped us and reflect on what we have received from the person. The second, is a feeling of dependency and shame in reflecting on what we have received from others. Finally, short-term emotional behavior. Researchers wondered if thinking about the times when we gave something to others might be more effective in promoting aid. Therefore, both researchers hope to find and hope that in reflecting on the granting of benefits to other people will produce a greater increase in prosocial behavior.
...though the researchers weren’t looking for it, he results represent ideas that can help the bystander effect in a situation. Smaller numbers increase the percentage of realization when it comes down to an emergency. The victim, if cohesive, actually plays a big role in causing the bystander effect as well. When a victim is unable to verbally communicate with bystanders, it lessens the chance of help. If a victim is capable of communicating, the help given could be more efficient. This is because it can help break the diffusion of responsibility. A victim looking a bystander directly in the eyes can even spark a quicker reaction in them. These are all ideas that psychologists still study today, and many even consider learning about this phenomenon a requirement.
A bystander is a person who is present and overlooks an event but takes no part within it. If someone was to be lying on a sidewalk unconscious and another person walked by and ignores the fact that there is a human being lying passed out in front of them, it makes them a bystander. One of the strengths is providing a new insight into bystander effect. The study argued that researchers have previously neglected the potential benefit of bystanders and thus, the study provided a new horizon by proving reversed bystander effect through experiment. This allows us to be aware of the fact that someone may be providing help merely due to impression management.
