Human survival can be broken down into a hierarchy of needs according to Abraham Maslow . His theory states that our five basic needs in order to survive are breathing, food, water, sleep, and homeostasis. The needs to survive can solely rely on these needs, when practiced correctly. Food being a major part of survival, the human race should consider the benefits of the foods that they consume daily. The educational system plays a major role in children development, departments in schools worldwide are in charge of what students learn and eat while in school. The school system should prove students with healthy meals, to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Obesity is the condition of being overweight, childhood obesity is now consider a major factor that leads to long and short term health effects. This disease is linked to many problems such as bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as poor self-esteem according to the Center of Disease Control Prevention. Obesity is more likely to happen because of a poor diet and little to no physical activity. Children from ages 5-18 cannot control what is being feed at home and school. Their food habits are based on what parents and schools can provide. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, in the year 2010 nearly 15 percent of American households were unable to acquire adequate food to meet their health needs. Parents cannot afford to feed their families with healthy foods, if the school system would provide at least two healthy meals: breakfast and lunch, kids would be receiving about half of the nutrition required to live a healthy life. Another way to provide variety is to serve items that vegetarians and vegan would eat, like salads freshly cut. Fruits and veggies are also foods that could be added to improve school lunch.

Overall, school lunch needs to change for the better, these changes can be done with help of the school system. With these changes the lunch system will be improving many lives and lowing the chance of diseases like obesity at such a young age. Food is such a strong supplement in life, “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison”-ann wigmore. The school should change their food menu to help have a better tomorrow.
