Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written, or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. The movement I was assigned is the naturalism movement which took place roughly between the 1880’s till the 1940’s. Naturalism was developed from realism in the late 19th century. It is a literary movement that suggests that social conditions, heredity, and environment had an inescapable foreshadowing on a person’s fate/destiny. Naturalism was adopted from Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest. Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest basically is that only people strong enough to with stand their environment and that can learn to survive on their own, will live.

Scientific Naturalism and Christianity are possibly the two most contradictory worldviews that are in our culture today. They are also the two most difficult to understand by one another. There is very little about these two worldviews that they have in common. They are a vast amount of ideas and beliefs held by adherents of each that are different. In order for these two worldviews to successfully co-exist in society, it is important to understand, accept, and learn from each one.
The main driving element in William Morris’s life has been the nature around him and the houses he lived in. The most prominent influence was the Kelmscott Manor. Therefore, I chose to go with Kelmscott Manor’s layout plan that exhibits the “inspirational garden “ that led to most of his design decisions, a map that depicts the pockets in the manor and how Morris was inspired by it. In addition to this, an original drawing of the Kelmscott Manor’s exterior that depicts how the manor amalgamated within the garden. To reinforce this, I picked a watercolor of the Kelmscott Manor and a photo that captivates the various perspectives of the garden in the manor. Moving on to his designs that interprets his love for nature I picked up the very first of his wallpaper design of the trellis that has a very naturalistic touch to it with the vines which seemed to be an extension of the “inspiration garden” on to the paper. Also chose one of the wallpapers he designed during the middle of his lifetime and one of his last designs as well. The underlying concept behind picking those was to outline the consistency in his design concept throughout his life. The ideology of the “natural man” has been around for centuries, but what is a “natural man”? The Judeo-Christian bible teaches that the natural enemy is an enemy to God. Why is this? The natural man is all the things that we hate about the human species, but we can’t do anything about it; it’s our nature. Greed, deceit, lust, to name a few, is the characteristics of a natural man. Shakespeare created several of these type of characters in his life of writing. In William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and The Tempest, Macbeth and Antonio are similar in their intent, however different in how they decide to carry out their plans.
Important aspects of naturalism are the ideas that people are essentially animals responding to their basic urges without rational thought, and the insignificance of man to others and nature. In The Jungle, Sinclair portrays Jurgis as a man slowly changing into animal as well as a man whose actions are irrelevant to the rest of the corrupt capitalist world of Chicago in order to show the reader the naturalist ideas of the struggles between man and society.
Romanticism is the style of writing that the author uses to express each poem and the elements that are involved within such as nature, emotion, individualism, nationalism, idealism, and imagination. What makes a poem romantic is “The ideas around art as inspiration, the spiritual and aesthetic dimension of nature, and metaphors or organics” (Spanckeren 2). Poets that are associated with romanticism are Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, and Emily Dickinson. Whitman’s poem is “When I heard the learn’d astronomer”. Poe’s poem is “Annabel Lee”. Dickinson poem is “The Soul Selects Her Own Society”. The American Romantic Movement is fully represented by Dickinson, Poe, and Whitman.
During the 1840s and the 1910s began two writing movements in American Literature that made Americans view reality in a whole new way. Realism and naturalism played a huge role in that era. Each writer had a style that captivated the audience’s interest, and sparked up an image of the story’s idea. Main authors like Stephen Crane, Kate Chopin, Jack London, Mark Twain, and Ambrose Bierce could be classified as a realist or a naturalist, by how they explain their views in their stories.
Robert Frost wrote poetry about nature and it is that nature that he used as symbols for life lessons. Many critics have been fascinated by the way that Frost could get so many meanings of life out of nature itself. Frost‘s poetry appeals to almost everyone because of his uncanny ability to tie in with many things that one is too familiar with and for many, that is life in itself. “Perhaps that is what keeps Robert Frost so alive today, even people who have never set foot in Vermont, in writing about New England, Frost is writing about everywhere” (294).
Where would humans be without nature? Scientifically, no creature could have ever existed without nature; earth could not have even existed without it. Despite this, people treat the environment in varying ways – some abuse it, while others respect and cherish it. William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies points out these assorted reactions to wildlife. Through the British boys’ characterization, Golding illustrates that humans instinctively react to nature in one of three ways: avoiding nature, harmoniously living with nature, or tyrannically trying to control nature.
“Why should he cling to life? he asked, and dropped the blazing stick into the snow. It sizzled and went out. The circle grunted uneasily, but held its own. Again he saw the last stand of the old bull moose, and Koskoosh dropped his head wearily upon his knees. What did it matter after all? Was it not the law of life?” (London 752). This is a direct quote from the book “Law of Life” by Jack London. It is a fine example of naturalism, which is a philosophical understanding that we are completely secluded in a single, physical universe. It is said that Charles Darwin was a huge influence on Naturalism. Although Darwin’s theory was not done on humans, natural selection is still quite similar to Naturalism. The Naturalism movement began during the time of WWI that uses devices such as realism, pessimism, theme, and irony.
In Music and Art As intellectual and artistic movements 19th-Century Realism and Naturalism are both responses to Romanticism but are not really comparable to it in scope or influence. For one thing, "realism" is not a term strictly applicable to music. There are verismo (realistic) operas like Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier created in the last decade of the 19th century in Italy, but it is their plots rather than their music which can be said to participate in the movement toward realism. Since "pure" untexted music is not usually representational (with the controversial exception of "program" music), it cannot be said to be more or less realistic. In contrast, art may be said to have had many realistic aspects before this time. The still lifes and domestic art of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin1 (1699-1779) anticipate many of the concerns of the 19th-Century Realists, and he in turn owes a debt to the Netherland school of still-life painting of the century before him, and one can find similar detailed renderings of everyday objects even on the walls of 1st-century Pompeii. Realism is a recurrent theme in art which becomes a coherent movement only after 1850; and even then it struggles against the overwhelming popularity of Romanticism. In mid-19th century France, Gustave Courbet2 set forth a program of realistic painting as a self-conscious alternative to the dominant Romantic style, building on earlier work by the painters of the Barbizon School (of which the most famous member was Jean-François Millet), which had attempted to reproduce landscapes and village life as directly and accurately as possible.
"look in vain for the poet whom I describe. We do not, with sufficient plainness, or sufficient profoundness, address ourselves to life, nor dare we chaunt our own times and social circumstances. If we filled the day with bravery, we should not shrink from celebrating it. Time and nature yield us many gifts, but not yet the timely man, the new religion, the reconciler, whom all things await" (Emerson 1653). Emerson is stating how everything can be a poem and a poet can reflect on valuable resources like nature to draw on and write. Whitman clearly uses this guide in order to write his poetry. He agrees that nature is a valuable tool.
When talking about poetry, most people have herd, or been familiar with the name Robert Frost. Even I, who haven 't studied much poetry until now have herd of his name. Robert Frost and his poems had caught my attention when researching poets. Reading his poems automatically made me think of him as a natural poet, because most of them had so much nature involved in them. When reading these poems, I found that most of them have some sort of nature in the writing. I have realized that Frost is not a nature poet as much as I once thought he was after watching "Voices and Vision Spotlight" and hearing Frost 's opinion on being a nature poet. Robert Frost does not consider himself a nature poet and we can see this through some of his poems, “Mowing,” “After Apple Picking,” and “The Road Not Taken.”
The poem has set a certain theme and tone but no definite rhyme. In this poem, the poet explores into a thought of the self, the all-encompassing "I," sexuality, democracy, the human body, and what it means to live in the modern world. He addresses that the human body is sacred and every individual human is divine. Hence, Whitman was known for writing poems about individualism, democracy, nature, and war.
Beginning in the late 19th century, two separate movements spread across America know as realism and naturalism. While the two were very similar in their beliefs and ideals there were still many apparent distinctions to differentiate the two. Realism and naturalism showed themselves in many aspects of life, from art and sciences to new math techniques and even religion. However, above all else these movements may have been most evident in the literature of this time. Reading through American literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it becomes perceptible which short stories portray realism and which represent nationalism.
These imaginative minds are often separated into two different generations, or styles of writings, based on the style of authors and the experiences that they wrote about.
