Scientific Naturalism Versus Christianity

Scientific Naturalism and Christianity are possibly the two most contradictory worldviews that are in our culture today. They are also the two most difficult to understand by one another. There is very little about these two worldviews that they have in common. They are a vast amount of ideas and beliefs held by adherents of each that are different. In order for these two worldviews to successfully co-exist in society, it is important to understand, accept, and learn from each one. In Element of a Christian Worldview by Michael D. Palmer, it is written that “no worldview can survive apart from a social settings that bridges multiple generations” (pp.58). Palmer also states “the social element is indispensable to the long-term success of any worldview” (pp.58) . Palmer wrote this in his description of how the social element is a key component of a worldview. When looking at these statements from a different perspective it can be said that they do apply to the subject of conflicting worldviews such as a Christian worldview and the worldview of Scientific Naturalism. There is no possibility that a society can exist without a social element driving it. People encounter each other on a daily basis. Conversations are held, views are discussed, and interactions will happen. But everyone is different. Every person has a different thought process and every person has different beliefs. In social setting, while one may find others that share with their worldview, in many cases one will often find those who do not. Is it possible for human to co-exist when they have conflicting worldviews and beliefs? Quite simply, yes. Many narratives or teachings of Scripture speak directly to the various elements of a worldview” (Palmer, pp 93) . Christians answer the question of what happens to us when this life is over by their beliefs in heaven and hell. If a true believer has accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior and led their life by the Bible and the laws of God, they will go to heaven once their earthly body dies. If a person leads a life of sin and never seeks redemption, living their life against God and His kingdom, they will burn in the fire and brimstone of hell. Scientific Naturalism has a different perspective on most aspects which a Christian worldview holds to be as truth and valuable to the formation of the very core of their beliefs.
