There is such an incredible amount of killing, violence, and deceit in King Lear by many characters that it is difficult to choose the most evil character. The most evil character may deceive one into thinking she is less evil than she is, but upon closer inspection it is quite clear that the most evil character is Goneril. Nevertheless, some may think Edmund, Cromwell, or Regan are the worst, but for a variety of reasons Goneril surpasses their evil. First of all, how does one define evil? Anything highly immoral is evil. In terms of the play King Lear, the most common form of evil is deceit and cruelty.
Cromwell and Regan showed violence towards Gloucester by gouging out his eyes. However Cromwell does not try to deceive anyone. He does not try to hide the fact that he is evil. Goneril is not only slightly more sadistic, malicious, and rotten than Cromwell, but she tries to fool other characters by concealing her ways. This makes Goneril even more evil. She tricks her father Lear, her husband Albany, and her sister Regan into believing she is not evil. In the following quote, she pretends to love her father but later turns her back on him:
Sir, I love you more than word can wield the matter, Dearer than eyesight, space, and liberty, Beyond what can be valued, rich or rare, No less than life, with grace, health, beauty, honor; As much as child e’er loved, or father found; A love that makes breath poor, and speech unable. Beyond matter of so much I love you. (Shakespeare 1.1)

Goneril is also a very revengeful person. She gets back a Lear’s favouritism of his daughter Cordelia by taking away everything from Lear and then turning her back on him. The bonus for her was the money and power. However, even after she gained his money, she still indulged in torturing Lear by casting him away with nothing. It was not necessary, for Lear does not take much money to take care of. She could have at least let him sleep in her house as opposed to outside.
To sum it up, Goneril’s heart is so rotten the stale decay of the organ can almost be smelled through the book. The rancid smell of her lies, sins, hatred, hunger for power, revenge, and violence are overpowering the other characters’ stenches. The strongest smell of Goneril is her vicious acts of evil and her lies to conceal them.

Goneril and Regan, two daughters of King Lear try to gain some power. After Lear banishes Cordelia, Goneril and Regan think that their father is going crazy and they over throw his power of being a king. Another character that tries to gain some more power in the play is the character, Edmund, his brother Edgar has more power than him, people treat Edgar better because Edgar was born in their parents’ marriage, while Edmund was not so they call Edmund, Gloucester’s illegitimate son.

When Edmund is slained by Edgar in Act 5, Scene 3, Goneril goes into a state of despair and disbelief “thou art not vanquished.” This mirrors the reaction of Lear when he finds Cordelia dead so could be used by Shakespeare to show the similarities between Lear and Goneril who both crave power and love, but have ultimately been left with nothing. Her character is one that most people would not symphasise with; James W. Bell refers to her as a “devious little conspirator,” but there are many layers to her character that Shakespeare has added to show how no person is completely “good” or “evil.”
In Act I scene iii, Goneril gives a direct order to her manservant, Oswald. Put on what weary negligence you please, you and your fellows. I'd have it come to question. If he distastes it, let him to my sister" (14 -15). She decided that having her father live with her was more than she could bear and, therefore, ordered Oswald to both disobey and ignore Lear from that point onward in hopes that he would soon leave her home.
Edmund’s behavior comes from his desire to attain legitimacy and, thereby, acceptance. Thus, Shakespeare characterizes Edmund as wronged and vindictive through Edmund’s soliloquy about his lack of stature, even when he is as intelligent and attractive as Edgar. Shakespeare supplements this characterization by reinforcing Edmund’s use of deceit and betrayal. Edmund begins to align himself with the Duke of Cornwell and form alliances with Goneril and Regan by first, disloyally revealing his father’s treasonous acts and then, pitting King Lear’s daughters against one another for control of the kingdom. Edmund gradually gains power and status, but at a cost.
Goneril and Regan commit many sins against their father, which in Jacobean times would have been seen as evil or against the natural order. Shakespeare portrays this theme with both outright and subtle actions throughout the play. It is only when Lear returns to himself that the audience sees how wrong his treatment was, with the return of Cordelia, who bears no grudge. In the beginning of the play, King Lear’s vanity, which is arguably one of his fatal flaws (hamartia, as defined by Aristotle) is the character trait that leads to his faulty perception. King Lear wants so badly to hear professions of love that he is unable to differentiate between honesty and dishonesty. However, it is not always clear whether King Lear has “lost this perception” or is “unwisely ignoring it” (Bradley). Even in the beginning of the play, it becomes evident that King Lear’s ability to perceive is significantly impaired. When he calls upon his daughters to profess their love in order to receive a share of his kingdom, he is pleased by Goneril’s flowery flattery, although it is clearly hyperbolic: “Sir, I love you more than word can wield the matter/Dearer than eyesight, space and liberty” (I.i. 60-62). Hatred and desire fueled Goneril, Regan, and Edmund to lie in order to obtain their parents’ power leading to destruction within their family. Edmund’s hatred was continued by the reminder that he was only the bastard son of Gloucester driving him to lie to both of them ultimately ruining his father’s eyesight and his brother’s identity. One purpose for such a violent scene is to define the villains of the story. The play opens with King Lear retiring and deciding to split his land between his three daughters Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. The size of the land plot each daughter will receive will be proportionate to their love for their father. The older two daughters Goneril and Regan eloquently announce their undying love for Lear, and are rewarded generously. The third daughter Cordelia, who truly does love her father, refuses to participate in such a display of flattery and lies. Cordelia announces, in front of all Lear's subjects, that she loves her father, "according to her bond, no more nor less." Insulted and hurt by Cordelia's harsh denouncement of love, Lear disowns her. And Lear's best friend of thirty years Kent defends Cordelia, Lear banishes Kent too. Having given away his land, Lear decides that he's going to take turns living with Goneril and Regan. To remind him of his kingship Lear kept a hundred knights. But when Lear shows up with his army at Goneril and Regan's houses, his "loving" daughters kick him out.
