` In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, the setting is necessary for the plot to work. For example, there are rocks surrounding the island. The huge boulders keep people off of the island and trap General Zaroff’s prey on the island. Rainsford sees that, “jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness” (p.3). As Rainsford swims towards the rocks, after he fell overboard, he can see himself on the boulders before he can even get to them. He is anxious to get to land, not knowing what is in the near future. The boulders usually keep intruders out, but Rainsford is one persistent man. If someone sees the island with boulders surrounding it, they will not want to want to climb them to reach the island. Another
example why the setting is so important to the plot is that the setting is an island so the general’s prey cannot escape. General Zaroff hunts humans and eats them for dinner. Once he catches his prey with his false channel, his prey has a hard time escaping because the island is surrounded by water. If the setting were somewhere other than an island the prey would easily escape. Rainsford is trapped as prey and feels as if he is “...in a picture frame of water, and his operations, clearly, must take place within that frame” (p.11). General Zaroff is making it so Rainsford is stuck on the island and cannot get away from being eaten. Overall, Richard Connell sets his short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” in a setting that is essential for the plot to work.
The Only Game, by Mike Lupica, is about a 6th grade boy named Jack that is very good at baseball. When the book starts out Jack and his old team mates are very excited that baseball season is just about to start up again. They all are out on the field explaining how it looks and smells so great. Then the day arrives that they had all been waiting for, tryouts. Jack explains how it is great to be back at it with his best friend Gus. After tryouts they found out who all made the team and it was basically the same team that they had last year. This year was supposed to be the year that they win the Little League World Series. They had all the offence and defense they needed to go all the way. Last year’s team made it to the World series
The author in this novel has very subtly used the settings to build up the atmosphere of adventure and suspense. For example, ‘Damall’s island rested on stone, Boulders edged the island, and rose up out of the ground in unexpected places all across it. the harbor beach was made up of stones as sharp as shells, as if a giant had brought his hammer down on the boulders, and shattered them. (page 3-4)’.This description of Damall’s island instantly makes the readers visualize the island and makes them curious to carry on. The mention of the stones and the boulders shows the ruggedness of the terrain and at the same time implies the hard life that the boys have to live there. It acts as imagery to show the cruelty of the Damall and his tyrannical behavior towards the boys. In conclusion
“I hunt more dangerous game….” Similarities and differences can appear anywhere, especially in the short story and the movie called The Most Dangerous Game. They have similar, yet different expositions, characters, and plots with conflicts. Many people say that books or short stories are better than movies because of the similarities and differences that are found. Books or short stories are usually more descriptive, informative, and do not stray too far from the central idea or main theme, while movies only fall into one or two of these categories. Movies hardly ever fall into all three categories, however if they do the movies become better. This is not the case with The Most Dangerous Game. One place where movies and short stories have major similarities and differences is at the beginning of the story or the exposition.

Literary Analysis Anthem and Station Eleven are both dystopian novels. Both books relate to the citizen having little to no freedom with the government that is controlling them. Anthem was written by Ayn Rand, she wrote about how the government in this area controls what each person is destined to be whether you like it or not. Whereas in Station Eleven the world has practically ended due to a deadly flu virus and, somehow, ended up with a man as many know as the Prophet attempting to rule the word. Both dystopian novels have a very unfair dictatorship type government.

Many of authors usually put their characters through tough complications to show the reader that no matter what happens; anyone could pull through. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.

The setting is an important part of any story. The setting can help paint a clear picture in order to establish what the characters are feeling, as well as setting the tone of the story. In the following stories, “The Destructors” and “The Most Dangerous Game,” Graham Greene and Richard Connell demonstrate the tone of the story by using Old Misery’s house and General Zaroff’s Chateau as the main focal point. While the two stories present differences in the tone of the setting, they both make a connection to the beauty that these two places possess. Greene uses Old Misery’s house to formulate the story that prepares the reader of how a post-war building and surroundings can have an effect on people’s behavior and feelings, while Connell uses General Zaroff’s Chateau in a way to deceive the reader from what is really happening in the jungle of Ship Trap Island.
Lord of the Flies is a novel written by William Golding in 1954 about a group of young British boys who have been stranded alone together on an island with no adults. During the novel the diverse group of boys struggle to create structure within a society that they constructed by themselves. Golding uses many unique literary devices including characterization, imagery, symbolism and many more. The three main characters, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack are each representative of the three main literary devices, ethos, logos, and pathos. Beyond the characterization the novel stands out because of Golding’s dramatic use of objective symbolism, throughout the novel he uses symbols like the conch, fire, and Piggy’s glasses to represent how power has evolved and to show how civilized or uncivilized the boys are acting. It is almost inarguable that the entire novel is one big allegory in itself, the way that Golding portrays the development of savagery among the boys is a clear representation of how society was changing during the time the novel was published. “Often fear of one evil leads us into a worse”(Despreaux). Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux is saying that fear consumes oneself and often times results in a worse fate. William Golding shares a similar viewpoint in his novel Lord of the Flies. A group of boys devastatingly land on a deserted island. Ralph and his friend Piggy form a group. Slowly, they become increasingly fearful. Then a boy named Jack rebels and forms his own tribe with a few boys such as Roger and Bill. Many things such as their environment, personalities and their own minds contribute to their change. Eventually, many of the boys revert to their inherently evil nature and become savage and only two boys remain civilized. The boys deal with many trials, including each other, and true colors show. In the end they are being rescued, but too much is lost. Their innocence is forever lost along with the lives Simon, a peaceful boy, and an intelligent boy, Piggy. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolism and characterization to show that savagery and evil are a direct effect of fear.
