The Prophets are split up into two different categories. The Former Prophets and the Latter Prophets. The Former Prophets are a series of stories that are based on narratives and the Latter Prophets are stories that are based on poetry. The importance of the Prophets is to foreshadow what is to come as well as focus on the dilemma and hope of the Torah. The message of the Prophets is that there is a dilemma because of man’s sinful heart, so God exiles His people in order to allow a time for repentance, but promises hope through a Messiah that will come from the seed of David. The Former Prophets are written in a poetic form that brings a sudden change and causes the reader to think more in depth when reading. First, Isaiah teaches the problem that lead to Israel’s exile. Israel rejected God as King and now they are completely forgetting about Him and all that He has done for them. They must come to the realization of who God is in order for Him to help them overcome and conquer sin. God allows Israel to be exiled to give them time to repent and turn to God. Isaiah 9 gives specific details of the Messiah that is to come. However, the details will not be understood until the end of the days when the Messiah actually appears. Next, Jeremiah is a commentary on the days before Israel is exiled. Jeremiah is a prophet sent by God to minister in Jerusalem about judgement and redemption. Jeremiah prophesies that Israel will be in exile for 70 years to allow them to turn from their wicked ways and turn to God. However, the Israelites do not believe him and he is eventually thrown into prison. Jeremiah leaves the Israelites with the choice to trust God and turn from their wicked ways or remain in exile. Ezekiel prophesies during the time Israel is in exile. Ezekiel is experiencing the time of exile with the Israelites. Ezekiel prophesies among the Israelites in order to turn them from sin to repentance.
