Work is a means of life, it is what keeps society running across the globe . Perspectively speaking work is the sole defender of anarchy. Our lives are based off the ideology of go to school, get a job, and work hard. That sentence alone has been embedded in our brains since most could remember. In the Memoir “first job” , Iliana Roman feels that hard work, and good ethics must be embedded in our youth. If neglected to do so, it can lead to a non functional society. She of all people knows this to be true. Iliana worked her way up from the bottom. She worked long hours, attended school, and raised 3 kids. eventually leading to her owning her own company, and being her own boss. Education should not solely be based off of bookwork. Kids and teenagers should be educated on much more than if they could add, or how well they write. In my opinion, Health and time management should be a major part of our learning curriculum. Iliana was pregnant and had a son at the age of Seventeen, she then had two more kids by the age of Twenty One. She proceeded to drop out of high school due to the social and economical pressures of being a high schooler, as well as a mother. Iliana makes it apparent that she was not ready for this life altering step. Iliana stated “ I wish i’d have finished school before having kids”. Health is extremely important, and in my perspective it needs to be talked about more. This issue is not only for kids, but it is a discussion that should be for everyone. Proper hygiene, sexual education, and simple ways to avoid spreading germs needs to be taught not only at schools, but in …show more content…
This positive attitude was due to a long yearning to finally be independent. Like most teenagers i was tired of relying on my parents for absolutely everything. I wanted change, i was ready to be my own person. I knew what i needed to do, I needed to get a job. This fantasy of being self sufficient was taking over my head. Thus explaining the determined demise i had brought on to my self. I was serious this time, i was not going to end my day until i was officially part of the working force. I see an add in the paper saying help wanted for a restaurant called Lous Beer Garden, boy did i like the sound of that. I drive over, apply for a job as a waiter, yet having zero experience in the field. In their defense I seemed quite sociable and was easy on the eyes, so they hired me. In the passage Iliana mentioned that being young and good looking doesn 't necessarily mean someone is skilled, and she was spot on. In the beginning I sucked, but like Iliana i worked my way up, and became an exceptional waiter. The pay was great, especially for a 17 year old. I was making around 600 dollars a week, only working Four days out of the Seven. My grades began to slip, and i started to miss school, due to long hours. Luckily i had teachers who were quite lenient, allowing me to turn in late work, and make up quizzes. I got to graduate but yet i was unable to join my peers in senior prom, and walking
It is safe to say that work comes in many different forms. Whether it be a fast food or a corporate, the people that surround an individual make a great impact on the way he or she may work. Singapore, by Mary Oliver, is about a young woman working as a custodian in an airport who although works alone, enjoys her work and the people she meets. Dorianne Laux’s What I Wouldn’t Do, introduces another young woman reviewing the jobs she has had throughout time and reflects on those that she liked and disliked. Hard Work, by Stephen Dunn, exemplifies a young boy working in a soda factory during his summer break. Searching for happiness in life and work is just what these individuals are doing.
Assume you are a 15 year-old teenage girl, you take school seriously, earn good grades, have a close group of friends that you can count on and want them to be a part of your life forever, and you have recently started dating a boy that you are crazy about. How can your life get any better than it is at this moment? Now, imagine you’re late. Your monthly visitor has not arrived on time this month. Your friend suggests that you take a pregnancy test, so you do. Fear overcomes you as you wait for the answer, then in a second your life has changed forever; You are pregnant! What are you going to do now? Sadly, this scenario is real for many young ladies. Could somebody have said or done something that would have prevented this from happening to you or someone close to you that you know? Your friend, your parents? How about your school? In the movie “Lean on Me”, the character Kaneesha portrays a student that finds herself pregnant. Her high school, Eastside, failed in seizing its opportunity to teach her about “safe” sex, using contraceptives, and to inform her about the realities of being a teenage parent. Now, while many may argue that it is not the school’s responsibility to help students make better decisions, the truth of the matter is that students spend the majority of their time at school leaving a window open for that teacher, administrator, or counselor to get through to them. Mr. Clark, the principal in the movie, sees Kaneesha crying and learns that she is pregnant. He tries to comfort her, but was there something he or anyone else could have done to help prevent her unwanted pregnancy? The answer is yes. Schools can help reduce the number of teenage pregnancies by improving how health classes are taught ...
If you’ve worked in your life then you know that working takes effort, dedication, and hard work. Work for many can also be a struggle just like it was for the main character in “What Work Is” by Philip Levine and for Jim Grayson’s in his interview in “Working” by Studs Terkel. Both the man in “What Work Is” and Jim Grayson are struggling with their experiences with work. The man in “What Work Is” cannot find a job and his brother is overworked, Jim Grayson has a job but it 's very tedious and he doesn’t spend much time with family. Work is a struggle as proved by Philip Levine and Jim Grayson, they conveyed this by using ethos, pathos, and logos as well as literary elements and techniques.
Growing up all my friends had perfect jobs for teenagers. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time applying for jobs and searching for places to work because money didn’t come easy and I wanted to be in control of my own money. But I could never score a job. I applied to at least 100 jobs at least twice and I still couldn’t get an opportunity.
In life everyone grows up trying to decide what to do when it comes time to take on a job or a career. They take in factors of what would make their friends and family proud of them, or what kind of job to achieve to make them seem vital to society. In both Charles Finn’s essay “The Dignity of Work” and Alden Nowlan’s poem “Warren Pryor,” they go into the different aspects of how “work” is viewed. They also point out a very important lesson that people should do what they enjoy in life without regard of others expectations.
Many people don 't realize how important sex Ed actually is. Sex Ed should be introduced at an age that teens understand what is being told to them, but where they would also listening take it into consideration. In a story I read called “Sex Ed” by Anna Quindlen I read how she was surrounded by six sixteen year old girls at a table who knew a lot about human sexuality, but she was very surprised because despite their knowledge about sex they were all pregnant. While I was reading this story it made me more knowledgeable of how little people think of sex. Especially when in a relationship.
Over time society has relaxed and the value of hard work has really lost base with the younger generation. This essay is written by a young girl named Jessica Hemauer as she braces her way through growing up with a “tough” life. Although it may seem a bit old fashioned, Jessica’s parents are helping her in more ways than she will not realize until later in life. The essay tells the tales of how she grew up living on a farm and struggled to find the happy balance between farm chores, school, and her social life. It is evident that she was targeting those who also have some sort of obstacles in their life because the essay transitions from her hardships to her success. Jessica can tell her story and gives readers a first hand experience on
When nothing is going right in life, what do you do? Do you just quit and hope for the best or do you pick yourself up and work even harder to succeed. Have you ever felt hopeless and full of despair in life? Iliana Roman, a single mother of three children and a owner of a hair salon, kindles the message that individuals who face adversity can still persevere in life and it is never too late, she conveys this through her memoir “First Job.” At seventeen years old Roman became pregnant on accident. This lead to her life to do a complete one eighty degrees, leading her dropped out of high school. She was at the point of no return, she simply could not hold down a proper job, the only way to support herself and her child is working three to four
I found the week as a whole a fun, new experience. It was great to meet new people that I may never would have met before joining this class. I am very gracious to have chosen to be a part of this great new experience. This first week allowed me to learn many new things that I did not know before about our friends. The week also showed me many new ways to play games and workout with the integration of dance. I learned how to do some yoga techniques, new stretches, and some new muscle strengthening exercises. The week also helped to improve my leadership skills and collaboration skills. The first week gave me a great first impression and through that impression, I can tell the rest of the semester will be just as great as the first week.
...ansmitted diseases today are overwhelming, in order for this to be prevented someone has to take the responsibility to teach our youth how to protect themselves. According to the article making love in the dark ?an estimated four out of five heterosexual women don?t even use condoms every time they have intercourse. This compromises women?s health enormously ( Bonavoglia 58) There is no reason that a young person?s health should be compromised because the lack of education on how to protect themselves. It should be the responsibility of our schools to protect them from these dangers because it is imperative that they are aware and make the right decisions.
Raising a child can be the hardest thing for an adult to do. Children required a lot of time, money, and attention from the parents or the person caring for them. Puberty is one of the most difficult times for anyone due to the crazy hormones, different emotions and also trying to identify who they really are. Teens don’t only have to manage their hormones changing but also have to manage their school work, homework, clubs, sports, choirs, and some have to manage part-time jobs. Although the number of teen pregnancy has been decreasing, a growing number of teens infected with std’s has been increasing. Sex ed in southern california high schools has helped decrease teen pregnancies, however the numbers of pregnant teens are still high as well
In the world of today, one of the most predominant controversies, we have been facing for decades is ‘Teenage Pregnancy’. Teenage pregnancy, affects different aspects of life, the newborn, mother and family of the teenagers involved. Few people believe that the society should be reprimanded. But I believe the society, should not take all the blame. In spite of societal blames, teens having unprotected/protected sex and getting pregnant are personal decisions. There is just a little that any society can do to avert such activities. In today’s world teenage pregnancy could be precluded and reduced by giving them the appropriate education on sex, why it is important for them to refrain from any sexual activities, until they are of matured age and emphasize that their future is far better without been a baby mother. Because once you have a child, your life is not completely yours anymore; it now revolves around the child. Example is when a teen goes to high school every day from 8:30am – 3pm, doing of their homework’s, and studying for exams is stress free; compared to when a baby is involved, you cannot got to class without having a babysitter or someone to look after the baby, baby’s need food very frequently which would interfere with study period. Such responsibilities are not for children of ages 13-19 years. I believe with educationally programs, that explain and show the teens what adulthood and having a baby is all about, might change a lot of teen mind set.
Overall, my point of view is that sexual education should be taught in school. It’s a subject that should not be looked over and should be taught before you go to high school when those things come into play. This is my point of view because boys and girls need to know about their bodies, know about STD’s, and know the different types of methods to prevent pregnancy. Sexual education should be taught regardless. Another important thing that everyone needs to learn are the different ways to stay protected so that you do not end up getting pregnant, or getting a girl pregnant. Instead of having unprotected intercourse they need to either use a condom, or be on some sort of birth control. There are many ways to be able to prevent pregnancy but they also need to know that you are never fully guaranteed that pregnancy won’t occur. They need to be informed
Education is a crucial part in the choices teens make. Between the ages of puberty and young adulthood, teens need to be taught proper knowledge on situations that could make a huge impact on the teen’s life. For example, teens not having knowledge of the risks of sex and how becoming pregnant could change a teen are why many teens become pregnant in their early life. Teens need to be taught before they go out into the world that bad things can happen if teens are not prepared. Another risk teens also need to be informed of is the dangers not only to themselves but for the baby as well. Babies born from teen pregnancies are more likely to have a low birth weight and are more likely to be born prematurely. To refute, some people believe that teens will learn as they go what the risks are and that teens should not be taught the risks any earlier than when they will learn
My first job after I graduated college I experienced an expectation testing my dedication to ethics, legality and my values. I accepted a position to create and run a college intern program and also to serve as an instructional aid in the classroom. Prepared to take on my first post graduation job I was shocked when I was informed my position would entail more than I had first agreed to. Not only would I be responsible for creating a new intern program and serving as an instructional aid but I would be expected to teach an English language development (ELD) course to seventh and eighth grades as well as a sixth grade elective. These new responsibilities were sprung on me less than two weeks before my supervisor expected me to perform them. The situation remains the same and I have taken the necessary steps to ensure confidence in my performance, I also know my students are receiving the best education that I can provide.
