The Walkabout is a book which outlines the meeting of two kinds of cultures and civilizations which takes place in the Australian Wilderness. The book shows how the Australian Natives, the Aboriginals, go through a walkabout to prove the rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. Walkabout also shows how the meeting of the two cultures interrupted the Aboriginal boy’s progress in his walkabout leading to a tragic ending. From seeing the Bush boy’s walkabout, it makes me think why I can’t have a type of passage which would represent the passage from childhood to adulthood. One kind of idea I could use as a type of walkabout would be to go camping away from a city and try to survive by you for at least two weeks. Clearly the Walkabout is a perfect example of the rite of passage and that it should be used as an example to see if a person has taken the journey into adulthood.
The Bush boy’s walkabout is to live alone for up to six months alone in the wilderness. He does this as a rite of passage following the way his people have done it for thousands of years. Walkabouts are for Aboriginal males around the age of fourteen. After completion of the process which can take anywhere from two weeks to six months, you are considered a man. The walkabout is very important to the Aboriginal’s culturally because it signifies if a male has taken the journey to manhood. The walkabout is unique only to Australia and lets a young person connect and discover the land of his ancestors.

From this Walkabout, I will have learned many things when it comes to an end. First, I would learn how to live alone and that I do have the capability to do it. Second, it shows how brave I could be and that I’m not afraid to be and think by myself. These two qualities are ways to prove the rite of passage and that it shows that the bridge from childhood to adulthood is crossed.
Learning about the Australian walkabouts really teaches us about learning and being more self-reliant. Walkabouts aren’t just for the rite of passage but for exploring and discovering things you didn’t know. My Walkabout teaches me many things, but I also learned of the Australian culture. Clearly, a walkabout is something the world should use as an example to show the bridge between childhood and adulthood.
In Australia the Aboriginals face discrimination daily. The film opened with four young Aboriginal girls singing on a makeshift stage facing their community. He shares many stories, a celebration of urban Indigenous identity and takes a satirical look at the media and popular culture. Playing a variety of characters, Mark pokes fun at everything from Neighbours (what would it be like if a Murri family moved into Ramsey street) to polities. The dramatic meaning of the performance is if Australia wants to become one, we need to learn to accept each other for their differences.
Michael Patrick MacDonald lived a frightening life. To turn the book over and read the back cover, one might picture a decidedly idyllic existence. At times frightening, at times splendid, but always full of love. But to open this book is to open the door to Southie's ugly truth, to MacDonald's ugly truth, to take it in for all it's worth, to draw our own conclusions. ‘The Drover’s Wife’ opens with a vivid visual image of the house which becomes a character in itself, the lexical word chain “round timber, slabs, and stringy bark, and floored with split slabs” shows us the poor, rough materials used to build only what is necessary to survive. Thus, we can visualise the simplistic nature of the lives the drover’s wife and her children live in their environment. Strong visual imagery is employed to depict the landscape; “Bush all round – bush with no horizon, for the country is flat. No ranges in the distance… No undergrowth”. The repetition of “no” emphasises the lack of distinguishing features, the land is monotonous and contains “nothing to relieve the eye”. Author Eden Robinson and playwright Constance Lindsay Skinner address the displacement, mistreatment, and abuse the indigenous population has faced, and still faces, in Monkey Beach and Birthright. Both Eden Robinson's novel Monkey Beach, and playwright Constance Lindsay Skinner's Birthright deals with characters who are struggling with trauma and haunted with scars from the past. The authors detail these events and bring the reader into the “shoes” of the characters through characterization, imagery, dialogue, and through revealing intimate memories of the characters. These literary techniques enable the reader to see the parallel between the cyclical, ambiguous state of nature, and the ambiguity in humans and how there is a perpetuating, intergenerational cycle of violence caused by abuse and the mistreatment of the Aboriginal.
The lines, “As I said, it might help if we … we can imagine it’s opposite” use perspective to put the non-indigenous Australians into the shoes of indigenous Australians, to help them explore and understand the possibilities of not belonging.

In the film Rabbit Proof Fence, Phillip Noyce uncovers the trauma, upheaval and journey of the victims of the Stolen Generation had to face and come to terms with, how most suffered poor treatment and mental distress. Noyce takes us on a journey through hardship and bravery, he lets us understand that a journey is not only physical but mental too. We see Aboriginals kinship to the land and how they are psychically and emotionally attached to it. One must have determination and courage to succeed through life’s hardships.

The process starts on the first day of school, the first day without your parents. Eventually we can spend the night at a friend’s house and then maybe even a week at summer camp. We learn to make ourselves food and to do our own laundry. We slowly learn to function on our own without the help of our parents. Obviously school is a necessary requirement for learning to do laundry but these are skills that our parents need to let us learn. They are there to help, but at some point we have to do it on our own.
The book Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, was a very interesting story about a young man going to live out in the wild of Alaska. This young mans name is Chris McCandless also known as Alex Supertramp. He had a lot of courage to go out this trip facing the wild. He has set high hopes for how young he is. Graduating college than leaving directly after graduating and burned all of his money and left his car and most possessions behind. His bravery definitely had a big impact on the story. With his bravery, it seemed like he has done this before and has no weariness. Chris was very independent on his trip. He received little help from people. He got work a few times to buy gear for his trip to Alaska, other than that he was either hitch hiking or walking.
As children we wished to grow up and become an adult sooner so we can have more rights, but the way to adulthood varies with different cultures. Since different cultures have different ways of becoming an adult the meaning of being an adult is different. A person leaves childhood and enters adulthood in many ways there are cultural, religious, or social events. A common way in many cultures is by a rite of passage or ceremonies; a rite of passage is a ritual or event that shows that a person is now an adult. A rite of passage usually reflects certain things that are important in a culture such as values, and beliefs. Rites of passage can be described as specifications that need to be met and occur around the same time as things such as puberty, and marriage. Common types of these ceremonies are usually found in religion; some examples of these ceremonies include baptism, and a Bat Mitzvah. All of these things are considered rites of passage for a person to become an adult in their respective religions.
