In The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury posits that becoming independent is shown as a brave, meaningful choice to take, whether it is for happiness, a worthy cause, or a peaceful life. It is shown that not following the norm and becoming an independent individual can lead to new, enthralling realizations, compelling philosophies, or true happiness. In this science-fiction novel, Bradbury explores this theme recurringly, more specifically in “Silent Towns”, “-And The Moon Be Still As Bright”, and “The Martian”. Written about the future, spanning the years from 1999 to 2026, The Martian Chronicles takes place on both Earth and Mars, telling the tale of the colonization of different planets and the annihilation of all humans on Earth through war. During the process of discovering these planets, human characteristics are prevalent, especially those concerning the great courage of independence and the bravery of individuality.
In the chronicle “Silent Towns”, Bradbury investigates this theme of independence through Walter Gripp, the last man on Mars. Gripp feels extremely lonely on Mars until he realizes that there is one more woman left. Once he meets her, Gripp does not like her physical features, but decides to give her a chance because she is his last chance at love. He realizes her personality is as unattractive as her appearance so he leaves her to find a place to live and it is described that, “...He’s lived there ever since, with two deep freezers packed with food to last him one hundred years... And when once in a while over the long years the phone rings- he doesn’t answer” (Bradbury 155-156). Even though Gripp does not want to be alone for the rest of his life, he decides it is a better choice than to live with the horrid...

Throughout The Martian Chronicles, being an individual that does or acts unexpectedly can be an eye-opening change. Even though becoming independent can have negative effects like death or loneliness, the change is worth it in Gripp, Spender, and the Martian’s situations. Being independent in today’s society can lead to many discoveries as well. Scientists and artists find comfort when they work alone, for example Albert Einstein or Claude Monet. Being an independent thinker can liberate your intelligence and creativity; for example, philosophers like Buddhist monks who find peace when they minimize their contact with other beings. Being an independent person can create realizations that will make you a better human being. Being an independent individual can lead to a more interesting and enthusiastic life.
