In the book "The Machine Gunner" by Robert Westall, Chas and his gang overcome all kinds of difficulties together to achieve their plan: fight the Germans themselves. In order to achieve their plan, Chas and his gang build a shelter called “Fortress” in Nicky’s garden. At first, the purpose of building the fortress was to hide the German machine gun that Chas found and to create a private and safe place for the gang. As the story progresses, the fortress becomes a very important place that provides them not only with comfort and safety, but also with the improvement of their social skills. The fortress provides comfort for Chas and his gang, both mentally and physically. In the book, on pages 93 and 94, it says, “It was great that the Fortress. …show more content…
lounged on the pink-sprigged mattress that covered the bunks...” From this quote, readers can see that the inside of the fortress is warm and cozy. It has all the necessities for a pleasant life, giving them comfort physically. Also, being in the fortress gives them enjoyment. That is because on page 175, when John ran away from his parents and thought about where to go, he thought, “... but that shelter was full of laughter and fun and children who were kind. That was the safe place he must run to now”. This indicates that John remembers the fortress as a fun and safe place. Readers can see that the fortress is a fun and safe place that provides comfort not only physically but also mentally. Therefore, the fortress became ‘home’ for Chas and his gang in terms of comfort. Moreover, the fortress became ‘home’ for Chas and his gang in terms of safety. It is because on page 94, it says, “There is nowhere as safe as Fortress Caparetto in the whole of Garmouth. Above the thin steel of the Anderson’s arched roof were three solid feet of earth and rockery, concreted together here and there.” This quote shows that, because they made the fortress secure and very strongly built, Chas feels safe within …show more content…
Then, he immediately runs off to the fortress, which shows he trusts in the safety of the fortress. Furthermore, he chooses to live in the fortress with Clogger, which indicates he thinks of it as a second home for him and feels secure there. Plus, in chapter 15, when Chas’s gang runs away from their parents, they all choose to go to the fortress without hesitation. This indicates that Chas and his gang feel safe and like being there. Thus, in terms of safety, the fort became a ‘home’ for Chas and his gang. In addition, the fortress encourages them to improve mentally, like at home. Home is a place where people feel comfortable and safe, but it is also a small society where children learn about society and how to interact with other people. At the fortress, Chas and his gang developed social skills and organized the gang. In chapter 7, they made a position for each person. For instance, “Sergeant Jones, Private Nichole, Corporal Carstairs”. This shows each person has a role and responsibility for it, like in society, which makes them
took a shot at a gunner and lady because the lady was announcing his position. In the story, it says “She began to talk to the man in the turret of the car. She was pointing to the roof where the sniper lay. An informer. the IRA sniper raised his rifle and fired” (O'Flaherty 2).
The Battle of Flers-Courcelette- This was the major Battle which involved New Zealanders at Somme which commenced on the 15th of September. The New Zealanders were lead by Alexander Godley and under the total command of Sir Douglas Haig. General Haig decreed that the so-called Battle of Flers-Courcelette would start on 15th September and in it tanks, the Allies new weapon would be used for the first time. The fourth and Fifth Armies were to renew the offensive on this day, supported by a massive
example of ghastly behavior was shown. He writes, "Two lambs, with a hundred wolves lying in wait for them. Two lambs without a shepherd- a gift" (43). In this excerpt, Elie symbolizes three things: the lambs, the wolves and the shepherd. The entire quote talks about the savageness and wanting, shown by the wolves (which represents the prisoners), towards the lambs (which substitutes for the cauldrons of soup) that was left unguarded by the shepherd...
The Battle of the Somme epitomizes the harsh realities of trench warfare for the Allies and represents the negligent battle planning and technological advancements that are associated with the stalemate of World War One. Trench warfare was common across the Western Front, with similar strategies being employed by both opposing sides. Sir Douglas Haig, one of the British coordinators for the Somme offensive is blamed with an offensive strategy destined for failure. The British offensive, an utter
Robert is famous for such pictures as “The falling solider”, a photo of a solider being shot in battle. Robert capa was also w a very wise man who knew a lot about a lot in my opinion. My reasoning for this is because of his quotes witch are as follows: “if your pictures aren’t good enough you’re not close enough”, “I hope to stay unemployed as a war photographer till the end of my life”, “the pictures are there and you just take them”, and “it’s not enough to have talent, you
Nick: World War 1 was a war that was fought from 1914 to 1918. European countries were growing increasingly hostile during the 20th century. WW1 started when archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. He and his wife were shot in their car. The assassins had attempted an assassination earlier by throwing a bomb into his car, but it bounced off. Nick: The war started when the “fatal shot” of archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked conflict between countries, which started to involve ally countries, which
The Sniper Analysis The thirty-fourth president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, once said, “I hate war as only a soldier who has seen its brutality, its fatality, and its stupidity.” This quote and pertains to the sniper since in the short story Liam O 'flaherty declares about a young man in the story is on a roof fighting in the civil war in Ireland. O 'flaherty writes this short story about a sniper fighting in the war to describe how brutal warfare is. One way that is used to describe
been stopped by innocent people being armed and fighting back. In order for an issue to even be at hand, both sides must agree that there is a problem with guns and gun control. Both gun-control and pro-gun advocates do agree there is a problem, pro-gunners say it is too hard to own a gun and the gun-controllers say it is too easy to get a gun. While using a point-counterpoint style to argue against gun control I will show guns are best controlled by good aim. The government must keep guns out of the
seen in the quote above. Henry feels like a “mental outcast” at this point because he worries of what will happen if he feels the urge to run. The quotes above foreshadows the later instance where Henry runs away. Chapter 8: (Page 48). Presently he proceeded again on his forward way. The battle was the grinding of an immense and terrible machine to him. The complexities and powers, its grim processes, fascinated him. He must go close and see it produce corpses The imagery in the quote above is quite
Reasons Why the Battle of the Somme is Regarded as Such a military Tradgedy Introduction ============ The battle of the Somme was a battle that took place in Eastern France and close to the border of Belgium. The battle of the Somme got its name because it was fought along the valley of the River Somme. The battle of the Somme began on the 1st of July 1916; the aim of the battle was to try and break the stalemate and to help relieve some of the pressure on the French at Verdun. The
deaths ever recorded at the time, but it also went down in history for the vast amount of weapons and ideas that were invented during it. Some of these have been modernized for use in the 21st Century but the majority were just mindless killing machines. World War One changed history and if it had never taken place then it would be a wonder to know what kind of world we would be living in.
Haig As a Leader I think Haig was a bad leader who made many critical mistakes during the battle of Passchendaele. From looking at the sources I can see many bad views of Haig as a war leader, although some good views can also be detected. In source A it is evident that Haig always ensured that his army was well equipped by asking the War Cabinet for more ammunition. I also know that Haig was
Many people in life struggle to overcome the demons they encounter in their day to day lives and many never overcome them, however, occasionally they do. Throughout Ernest Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", the author develops the idea of an American couple, Margot, and Francis Macomber, who have reached a roadblock in their marriage. The couple finds themselves on an African safari hunting big game, led by the problematic guide Robert Wilson and his crew. Ernest Hemingway’s
motor increases as it dawns on the soldiers that they are about to go into combat. The noise of German gunfire is heard as the bullets ricochet off the raised ramp and splash the water around the boat. Finally, the ramp goes down and a German machine gunner takes down the packed in rangers row-by-row. Those at the back of the boat bail out the sides landing in the ocean before the German’s have a chance to shoot them.
to keep unwanted things off of one’s property, such as coyotes and other animals. Semi-automatic firearms are not fully-automatic military machine guns. Gun control supporters say that semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 are “military-style assault weapons” designed for war on battlefields. The military uses fully-automatic rifles, which are regulated as machine guns by the National Firearms Act of 1934. A fully-automatic firearm
