The Life of Audrey Hepburn
Actors leave behind their movies when they die. Singers leave behind their songs. Politicians hopefully leave behind their lasting policies. Although some people do extraordinary things in their lifetime and yet when they die, no one remembers them or the things they accomplished. Audrey Hepburn was a famous movie star in the 50’s and 60’s and left numerous classic movies behind in her legacy but that is not all she left behind. Audrey Hepburn will never be forgotten because of the legacy she has left with her acting career, humanitarian work, and the profound effect she continues to leave in her afterlife.

She was deeply influenced by the experiences she encountered growing up in Nazi-occupied Holland during WWII. She turned those experiences into a positive impact by devoting the last half of her life to charity (Audrey Hepburn). On a trip in China, a member of the United Nations heard her speak about the suffering of children, a topic she was very passionate about. A few days later she was contacted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), asking if she would be an official Goodwill Ambassador for them (Fiori). This organization was a perfect fit for her because she had experience firsthand the effects of malnutrition and poverty during WWII (Fiori). Once she began work for the UNICEF, she traveled all over the world and for a five year span she spent seven months out of the year abroad doing charity work. Her travels included India, Central and South America, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Thailand and Ethiopia (Fiori). Her films during the 50’s and 60’s have become classics throughout the American society and the world. Her humanitarian work with UNICEF has left a lasting impact on children in many third world countries. Along with her acting career and humanitarian work, she also continues to influence the world of fashion and inspire young girls today. Shirley Temple Black continues to inspire children today. She has achieved great accomplishments in the world of politics and in the world of childhood fame. She was the world’s most popular star in the worst of times, and always brought smiles and happiness where ever she went, in her life and in her movies. Her name is still connected with fame, although it has been over 50 years since she has appeared in a movie, much less been a star. However, Shirley Temple Black continues to be a household name in homes across the world. The little girl with curls, who radiated enough happiness to bring a smile to everyone who saw her, even during the darkest days of the Depression, will never be forgotten.
Her whole life, Diana always strived to do what she could to help those around her through lots of charity work. Two famous quotes of Diana’s are “Anywhere I see suffering, that is where I want to be, doing what I can.” and “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” about the charity work she did. When Diana died, she left behind a legacy that is still remembered, in our modern society as people still strive to follow in Diana’s footsteps. Shirley Temple. When the name is uttered an image of the dimpled faced, curly haired, tap dancing four year old from the 1930s automatically appears in everyone's mind. She was the child actress of the depression era, winning over the hearts and pocket books of many. Films, dolls and even a drink named after her, her face and name were ones that couldn't be missed. She was Fox's gem and saviour. She was an escape from the hard life. She was a star. The image that she gave off, of love for the needy and pure optimism, must have had an origin. Did it rise from the social needs of the public to escape the depression or was it purely constructed by Twentieth Century-Fox? Her image clearly correlates with the mentality of the public at the time, but Fox must have had a hand. Undoubtedly her image was created through a mixture of both elements.
Growing up in 1960s, Diana Spencer always knew royalty. This idea of power was a birth right through her father, but yet Diana did not know of the influence she was going to inflict one day. Princess Diana, through her marriage with Prince Charles, became an icon for the United Kingdom and impacted many in the world (Princess Diana Biography Princess). Along with her compassionate heart and humble soul, Diana ascended in the eyes of the public and became England’s sweetheart and beloved leader. Princess Diana soon inspired people all over the world by breaking the royal stereotypes, sponsoring many charities and providing a prime example of what it means to love one’s children and people.
My Mise-en-scene analysis is on American Beauty on page 217: number 1(The dinner scene). The frame itself is a very closed, tight shot; there is no way for the characters to escape and they're left with only confronting each other in this very little space. The shot of the camera isn't necessarily far away or close either. It's neutral, and we can see the full action of the family's dinner conversation happening right in front of us. My eyes were immediately attracted to the bright, white table and then my eyes focused on the faces of the family. The scene's texture is slightly fuzzy, and is not very detailed. Jeunet’s Amelie and Ham’s Tilly enter as outcasts; who long for acceptance and normalcy from the members of their societies. The use of settings in the novel and film are used as a visual representation of Tilly and Amelie’s isolation. Tilly is “detached” at the top of the hill but able to “[see] everything”, just as Amelie is in her high positioned apartment that overlooks the unfairness in Raymond Dufayel and Lucien’s lives. They experience detachment in different ways, with Amelie growing up “deprived of playmates”, never learning the social skills necessary to enter society, and Tilly being isolated, for being “the dangerous one” and sent away from the society at a young age. She mastered the art of stealing your affection, which awarded her with thousands of screaming fans.
Yet Streep acknowledges her own influence by promoting noble causes and speaking up for those in the minority. Through her charity, speeches, and even her work, Streep sets an example to the rest of the world for how to use fame to be a beacon of hope in a dark world. She is widely accepted as a role model to those who share or are supported by her causes; all over the globe, people are touched and encouraged by Streep’s drive and passion. Her true calling, hower, the love of her life, is the stage. It is no doubt that Meryl Streep serve as the greatest influence to those who share this love, but she encourages everyone to look at the wonders around them and learn everything you can about the world and the people who live in
Even twenty years after her death, the world continues to remember the princess who perpetually remembered them. Princess Diana lived as one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century. She devoted her life in the spotlight to bring recognition to causes that she felt others should care about, such as AIDS, homelessness, leprosy, and landmine removal. Diana believed that love and kindness served as the remedy for any sort of suffering. She once stated in an interview with BBC journalist, Martin Bashir, “I think the biggest disease this world suffers from in this day and age is the disease of people feeling unloved. I know that I can give love for a minute, for half an hour, for a day, for a month—I’m very happy to do that and I want to do that” (Roisin Kelly). While the matter remains certain that people were initially starstruck having a princess in their midst, it is undoubtedly Diana’s kindness that attracted and continued to attract beings to her presence. She held the hands of those deemed unsafe to touch and broke down stigmas in the process. Diana became a hero for those who had no one to speak up for them, or the trials they endured, through simple acts of kindness, such as a warm smile or a gentle handshake. While Diana aided those around her, she herself desperately craved love and kindness, as discussed in the following quote from the New York Times’ Article, “Diana in Search of Herself”. “Indeed, Diana's unstable temperament bore all the markings of one of the most elusive psychological disorders: the borderline personality. She would never be seen wearing something society would see as something a normal woman would wear; this made her unforgettable (Charles-Roux 5-6). In the beginning, Chanel was only known for creating and designing hats, but she would soon be known for so much more (Charles-Roux 91). Because of Chanel’s new bold ideas, the women’s fashion industry has forever been changed (Charles-Roux 6).
The movie, “Mona Lisa Smile” is an inspirational film that explores life through feminism, marriage, and education lead by a modernist teacher at the end of a traditional era. It begins by introducing the lead character, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), a liberal-minded novice professor from California, who lands a job in the art history department at a snobbish, all-girl college, called Wellesley, in the fall of 1953. Despite warnings from her boyfriend Paul that a Boston Brahmin environment was out of her element, Katherine was thrilled at the prospect of educating some of the brightest young women in the country however, her image of Wellesley quickly fizzles after her first day of class, in which, was more like a baptism by fire. Her smug students flaunted their exhaustive knowledge of the text and humiliated her in front of a supervisor. However, Katherine, determined not to buckle under pressure, departs from the syllabus in order to regain the upper hand. She quickly challenged the girls’ idea of what constituted art and exposed them to modern artist not endorsed by the school board. She dared them to think for themselves, and explore outside of their traditional views. This form of art was unacceptable by the students at first however, overtime Katherine penetrated her student’s distain and earned their esteem.
Once she had her children she began being in the public’s eye much more often. Soon she would be labeled the “People’s Princess.” She was frequently called a fashion icon, role model, and arguably the most famous and photographed woman in the world. People who were close to her said that she had a “very easy going personality.” Lord St. John of Fawsley said “her appeal lay precisely in that she elevated feeling to the highest position. That is why people responded to her - they knew she really cared.” She became involved in numerous charities.
