The Life of Audrey Hepburn
Actors leave behind their movies when they die. Singers leave behind their songs. Politicians hopefully leave behind their lasting policies. Although some people do extraordinary things in their lifetime and yet when they die, no one remembers them or the things they accomplished. Audrey Hepburn was a famous movie star in the 50’s and 60’s and left numerous classic movies behind in her legacy but that is not all she left behind. Audrey Hepburn will never be forgotten because of the legacy she has left with her acting career, humanitarian work, and the profound effect she continues to leave in her afterlife.

She was deeply influenced by the experiences she encountered growing up in Nazi-occupied Holland during WWII. She turned those experiences into a positive impact by devoting the last half of her life to charity (Audrey Hepburn). On a trip in China, a member of the United Nations heard her speak about the suffering of children, a topic she was very passionate about. A few days later she was contacted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), asking if she would be an official Goodwill Ambassador for them (Fiori). This organization was a perfect fit for her because she had experience firsthand the effects of malnutrition and poverty during WWII (Fiori). Once she began work for the UNICEF, she traveled all over the world and for a five year span she spent seven months out of the year abroad doing charity work. Her travels included India, Central and South America, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Kenya, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, Thailand and Ethiopia (Fiori). Her humanitarian work with UNICEF has left a lasting impact on children in many third world countries. Along with her acting career and humanitarian work, she also continues to influence the world of fashion and inspire young girls today.
