“Success in life comes when you simply refuse to give up, with goals so strong that obstacles, failure, and loss only act as motivation” Three powerful people who 've experienced what being successful truly means are Paul Tough, Malcolm Gladwell, and Cheryl Marie. Tough had succeed in writing and speaking. Gladwell grew up to be a best-selling author, journalist and, a public speaker, and Rose grew up to be an Associate Director Of Nursing at Menorah Park. They all represent successful people that have achieved their goals in life, goals that were only accomplished by failing, working hard, and never giving up. Paul Tough’s idea to success is to find inner character, sometimes all someone needs is failure. Failure can lead to character growth …show more content…
Gladwell is known for his achievements as a best-selling author, that composed the book Outliers in November 18, 2008. His book included 8 chapters and an Epilogue at the end of the book. In the last chapter of the book known as “Rice Paddies and Math Tests” Gladwell explains his view on math test scores between Americans and Asians. He describes Asians at being extremely better at math than Americans because of their culture with rice planting. Rice planting is a big responsibility in their culture because of all the hard work that they put into planting the rice. He explains in his book, “Working really hard is what successful people do”(239). In this quote Gladwell explains that the only way to succeed in life is to work really hard towards one’s goal, which relates back to the Asians working consecutively towards their goal that was rice planting, which they did 364 days of the year. Gladwell also states, “Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and willingness to work hard for twenty-two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds”(246). In this quote Gladwell explains thoroughly his definition of what it is to truly succeed by doing this he gets his point across by stating the people who work really hard towards their goal will achieve rather than the people who want to …show more content…
Growing up Rose attended Lake Land community college, and then later attended Kent State University for Nursing. After college she has been dedicated to her job for the last 23 years as Associate Director of Nursing at Menorah Park. Working in her position Rose says, "It was very hard to get to the position I am at today. It took a lot of hard work and years of dedication to prove that I am capable of this position" In this quote it backs up her belief of success by showing her level of commitment to get her to the position she is in today. She worked very hard for more than one year just to prove to her peers she is capable for the position. Rose also states, "In my position I am required to oversee 252 Nursing assistants, 120 nurses, but that 's not all I schedule shifts, interviews, hiring and do the skin breakdown of each of my 3 units" With this big of a list Rose has to work extremely hard to get each and everyone of these tasks done in just a 9 hour period per day, 5 days a week. This shows how hard working and dedicated this woman is, with all the responsibilities she has to do everyday. Roses ideas contrast to Toughs ideas in the fact that Rose believes there 's no label on success and each person just strives to do the best for
After reading Failure is Not an Option by Nathan Wallace, we ponder whether failure is beneficial or not. However, after reading the passage, we stumble upon a quote where Wallace says “Failure is always an option. Failure can lead to great learning and progress when a specific failure is analyzed through the lens of a growth mindset.”
I agree with Gladwell that hard work can lead to success. Too often we think success happens because someone has money or gets lucky. This is wrong. Success takes hard work, imagination, and motivation. “Success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities.” (Gladwell 52) If you assert yourself and use your mind and imagination, you can create those
People may argue that Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is all about family background and family legacies. Others may say that what mattered most is the way someone are brought up and how much time and dedication they put into a skill or goal. People may also say that all of these factors are what the book focuses on in order to be successful. The book is not about family background, the “10,000 Hour-Rule”, or “Rice Paddies”. All of those encompass something very important, opportunity to actually apply those theories. The most important theory Gladwell presents is that opportunities are the key to become successful more so than the other theories.
While going on a journey to be successful there are many up and downs that can create a stronger person or knock a person down. When a person keeps on fighting over and over without giving up he or she are described to be ambitious like Jane Golden who was mentioned in Purpose by Angela Duckworth. Continuing to go further and further a person will run into others who are in need of help, and the right thing to do is be caring like Louie Zamperini who is viewed as a hero in today’s world and in Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Once reaching a stage in life that is comfortable a person will soon discovered happiness. Principal Ms.Short is starting find happiness at Solon High School. Because success is an accomplishment that is very complex through a long period, it is a mixture of
People have different success stories that explain the ups and downs they have had to go through to achieve all they got. Most of the world’s admired men to day who have turned out to be the inspiration of most of the people that are excited and determined to succeed in life never started where they are. Success can mean many different things to different people. Some believe that success is when one is famous and very wealthy. Others think that it is when a person has achieved their life goals. According to critically acclaimed and best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell, though, the argument is not what success is; it is how it is achieved. Gladwell is the author of the novel Outliers, which describes his many theories and ideas of how people have and can become successful. Gladwell wrote his book for all to read because he wanted to disprove the popular belief that people become successful all by themselves; that is, without help from others or outside factors. Gladwell’s effective use of stories of the lives of famous and successful people in Outliers, coupled with his prolific use of logical appeals, or facts and statistics, enables him to easily explain his opinions while convincing his audience that success is attributed to many different factors in one’s life.
THE ROAD TO SUCCESS IS NOT SMOOTH. SUCCESS ITSELF IS NOT FINAL, FAILURE IS NOT FATAL, IT IS THE WILL TO CONTINUE THAT COUNTS.
Watching an acquaintance or friend achieve a goal they set for themselves is very rewarding. When the goal is achieved, you would consider them successful. Success is a term with many definitions. Many people think that success is determined by the amount of money one makes, or how many people they boss around each day. This is the opposite of how success is defined. Success is about being happy with an outcome and doing something correctly. It is about feeling accomplished when something is finished. Making money and getting fame is a reward for success. Success is setting a goal, putting others first, and doing what you have to do to achieve the goal. Success involves happiness from achievements, gaining respect from peers, and a lot of selflessness. It is very difficult to achieve, that is why many people work so hard towards it.
What are the keys to success? The answer to this question is uniquely different for each one of us But, knowing what you want and striving to achieve it remains an underlining factor.Winston Churchill rightly, stated that “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Malala Yousafzai, the seventeen year old school pupil and education activist from Pakistan's Swat Valley embodies this statement. The youngest ever noble peace prize nominee rose prominence because of her defiance against the tyrants who tried to deprive her and her fellow classmates of their right to an education. The factors that contribute to Malala's rise to prominence and subsequent success are the support of her Family particularly her Father, her intellectual skills and her ability to overcome adversity.
Michael Jordan once said, “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I have been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed” (BrainyQuote). To be successful means to complete a goal or task at hand. Many people want success but do not know how to achieve it. In his book Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell writes “To become a chess grandmaster also seems to take about ten years…And what’s ten years? Well, it’s roughly how long it takes to put in ten thousand hours of hard practice. Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness.” (Gladwell 41). Gladwell is right that Ten thousand hours is the magic number because to achieve mastery in a certain skill it cannot happen overnight. The “Ten Thousand Hour” rule is the formula for success in achieving mastery of a skill because it integrates practice, talent, and most of all opportunity.
In 2008 Malcolm Gladwell published his well acclaimed novel Outliers, which told in his view of “the story of success.” Being a best selling author and speaker, Malcolm Gladwell wrote Outliers in attempt to teach his audience, especially those who are about to start careers, that success is attainable though many factors and that one cannot be successful without the help of others. He theorizes that there are factors in and out of one’s control that would lead to their success, such as the 10,000 rule, luck, hard work, intelligence and where one came from. Gladwell uses stories of various people who have successful lives and provides numerous examples of factors that contribute to one’s success to effectively defend his opinion that success cannot be achieved by oneself alone.
Success can be determined in various ways. There are many formulas that people can try to calculate a person’s chance of achieving success. As stated in the book Outliers, by bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell, there are many factors that determine success. Gladwell after all is successful. He has published five books, was named one of Times magazine 100 most influential people, and won the American Sociological Association's first award for Excellence in the Reporting of Social Issues. Gladwell published his third book Outliers examines how a person's environment, in conjunction with personal drive and motivation, affects his or her possibility and opportunity for success. Malcolm Gladwell uses logical appeals, facts and statistics from very well-known successful people, and emotional appeal to the reader to make them realize that they cannot become successful in their field unless they combine a number of factors to become successful. Whether it is something that the person can control like the 10,000 hours or something that is out of the person’s hands like when they were born Gl...
Each person has a different understanding of success on account of the fact that everyone has their own success criteria. Some people believed that earning a lot of money today is a success while some think that does well on what he wants to do is success. How can we achieve success? Some consider that success can only be achieved by talented people, while others argued that talent is important, but those who are not wise can still succeed through an acquired effort. I agree to the latter view. The unintelligent can be successful through some conditions, such as self-confidence, persistence and diligence.
The meaning of success in school is different for everyone. Because everyone’s way of life and property is different, people pursuit of different ideas and goal. Some people might think that passing all the exams is succeeding. Others will think that getting well with friends means success. According to my life experience, I focus more on self cultivation. The personality is like a key to successful, that forester some characteristics, like independent and confidence. For me, making an improved progress is what is success, and I think patience and self-control are the main factors for success.
