Now that brings me by a natural and easy transition to Simon Wheeler of California; a pioneer he was, and in a small way a philosopher. Simon Wheeler's creed was that pretty nearly everything that happens to a man can be turned to moral account; every incident in his life, almost, can be made to assist him, to project him forward morally, if he knows how to make use of the lesson which that episode teaches, and he used -- well, he was a good deal of a talker. He was an inordinate talker; in fact, he wore out three sets of false teeth, and I told about a friend of his one day -- a man that he had known there formerly, and who he had a great admiration for, of one Jim Smiley, and he said it was worth a man's while to know Jim Smiley. Jim Smiley was a man of gift; he was a man of parts; he was a man of learning; he was -- well, he was the curiousest man about always betting on anything that turned up that you ever see, if he could get anybody to bet on the other side, and if he couldn't he would change sides. As soon as he got a bet he was satisfied. He prepared himself with all sorts of things -- tomcats, rat terriers and all such things, and one day he ketched a frog; said he calculated to educate him. And he took him home and never done nothing but set in his back yard and learn that frog how to jump. Yes, sir, and he did learn him to -- he did learn him to. When it came to jumping on a dead level there wasn't no frog that could touch him at all. Come to jump on the dead level, why, he could lay over any frog in the profession, and Smiley broke all the camps around there betting on that frog. Bye and bye he got a misfortune. He used to keep his frog in a little lattice box. The frog's name was Daniel Webster, and he would bring that box down town and lay for a bet. And one day a fellow came along, a stranger in the camp he was, he says, "What might it be that you have got in the box?" "Well," Smiley says, "It ain't anything particular, it's only just a frog," "Well," he says, "What is he good for?
Amina Gautier has been awarded with Best African American Fiction and New Stories from the South; in addition, she has successfully created At Risk. Gautier’s story is based on the African American community and the different types of struggle families can realistically face. However, if a white person would have written this exact story it could have been misinterpreted and considered racist. Stereotypes such as fathers not being present, delinquencies and educational status are presented in the various short stories.

Many times in a story what the main characters say can reflect their personality and lifestyle. This is shown effectively in the memorial epic by Paul Zindel, The Pigman. Throughout this stunningly truthful story, John and Lorraine consistently say things that show just what type of people they are.
Christmas holidays in Northup narrative was portrayed as a time when the slaves were not in constant labor. Epps would allow them between 3-6 days off. The slaves look forward to the Christmas holidays. The slaves get a “Christmas supper” that they all look forward to. This aspect of slavery is very surprising. I wouldn’t think that the slave owners would allow their slaves this much free time as well as freedom. All throughout the year, these slave owners beat and torture their slaves but when Christmas time comes around, they treat them like one of their own. I feel this type of treatment should be all year long instead of just during the Christmas
A system that sends real time updates to customers to let them know a closer range of time as to when your package will make it to you, would make it so more customers would be home to sign for their package. This would not only save time on the person receiving the package but would also save time, money and gas for the drivers as there will not be as many redelivery tries for the following day.
Heroism is a rare quality found within the human race but most people can identify a hero or a hero type personality when they first meet someone. This is the quality that Aminata Diallo had upon everyone that she had met. Most of the time she would receive a good reaction from it but the times that she had received horrible reactions from white men who were afraid of her power, were the times that it truly showed her grand possession of heroism. Along with all the other slaves, she suffered from the mistakes of the white folk and was not shown any respect in return. However, Aminata was special from the rest and still managed to respect or act as though she respected everyone she met even if they had treated her badly. This lesson she learned from her father and in the midst of all evil, she intended to follow her father’s guidelines: “You must learn respect,” Papa said. “But I do not respect her,” I said. Papa paused for moment, and patted my leg. “Then you must learn to hide your

In “The Shark” by EJ Pratt, the poet tends to use “he” when referring to the shark. The poet also describes the shark in a way that leads us to think that the shark is a symbol representing war. The poet suggests this by using metal descriptions of the shark such as “sheet iron”, “three-cornered”, “knife-edge”, “tubular” and “metallic grey” (4-6, 10, 19-20). So it could be that the poet is doing this to associate the shark with weapons used as war alas the association of metal in the poem. In my version, the shark is “she” rather than “he”. This changes the meaning of the poem. The meaning that I am trying to send to the readers is how women tend to think of each other. In the original version, the poet associates the shark with metal description. In my version, the metal descriptions as mentioned above are now “pennant flag”, “silvery grey”, “keen-edge” and “cannular” (4-6, 10, 19-20). Women are different from men. They do not use violence to solve matters, but rather they use their words and intelligence. When using these words, you can feel the change of tone from a harder tone to a softer one which is similar to the difference of violence and words. In line 15, the shark snaps at a flat-fish. In my version also line 15, the shark only glowers because females are not as aggressive as males. Females tend to look down upon other females just as the shark is doing in the poem.
The first thing I do when I have to write a paper is I try to determine what exactly the prompt is asking me to write about. This might seem obvious but, on occasion, I might misread or simply misunderstand a prompt which could result in writing a completely different paper than what was asked of me. Once I completely understand what is asked of me, I start to think about what I already know about the topic and what I need to know in order to write my paper. I then start my research on the topic and start taking notes on what I will need to incorporate into my paper.

For the entirety of my undergraduate career I had the distinct ability to successfully write research papers, critical essays and journal entries. On the whole I feel that my writing was successful due to the fact that I received excellent grades as well as glowing comments of support from my professors. Please understand that I am not boasting about my grade point average, class rank or even attempting to claim that I am a good writer. However, I do feel confident in my abilities to write papers that speak directly to the question at hand while simultaneously addressing, although not necessarily adhering to, the professor’s point of interest. I must credit much of my success as an undergraduate to Mr. M of the High School English Department. My outlook on academic writing was drastically altered during the fall of 1997 with the help of Mr. M and a writing course entitled College Prep II.

We all have heard of Spider Man. He was the average teenager until he was bitten by a radioactive spider. I like Spider Man but I believe there are a lot of things missing in his movies. The police and government are portrayed poorly, as to assisting Spider Man or lack there of. Spider Man goes about doing his own thing, outside of the law. He is something we can all relate to and I believe that is why a lot of people like him. Most people would say they want to be like Spider Man because of his cool super human powers. I believe it would be a lot of hard work, dedication, and a lot of responsibility. Think about this, you would have two lives to live as a completely different person. You would have to keep up good grades, make some money to live on, support your family in one life, then save people, fight crime, and kill villains in the other life. It would be way to overwhelming for me.
Foods and body types are labeled in polar terms such as good versus bad, right versus wrong, and fat versus thin. Through use of scare tactics, students are taught to a negative standpoint rather than a positive one. Telling children what not to do is not only less effective, but also creates a consequence of guilt if they don’t do what’s ‘right’. Even if balanced nutrition is taught in the classroom, interactions between school staff outside of the classroom often model food obsession. Through their own actions and insecurities, teachers many times unintentionally encourage food restriction and judgment of bodies seen as ‘fat’ (O’Dea et al.). Extreme-based educational processes, along with the grossly exaggerated claims on nutrition and body ideals that saturate society, foster defensive and guilt-ridden relationships between children and food. Reshaping nutrition education to encompass a whole-health based curriculum that teaches balance, self-acceptance, and the overall view of food as a source of life, is a vital step in ameliorating societies’ overall relationship with
B.F. Skinner was born in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania on March 20th, 1904. He had described his child hood as “warm and stable.” His younger brother had died at an early age of a cerebral hemorrhage. Skinner as a child had a significant fear of hell which eventually led him to turn towards atheism. His fear did not indicate that he was at all mentally un- stable. One of his most fond childhood activities was inventing things. A skill that became useful in his later psychological experiments. He was extremely fond of the outdoors and of attending school. His Father was a lawyer and his mother was a very intelligent woman who spent her days as a homemaker. Skinner had an enjoyable childhood.
