The Joy of Learning
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, (to) learn is defined as “to gain knowledge, understanding or skill by study or exposure.” However, this is just a definition and does not give the true meaning of the word. It can not describe the true joy of finally learning and understanding something that has proven difficult. I believe that feeling can be facilitated with a teacher who understand those emotions. I have known teachers who truly portray their love for the art of teaching through their awareness of those special emotions and by allowing those emotions to work for them.
This concept of facilitated learning has been widely discussed in theories. Some of the more popular theories include the behavioral and cognitive learning theories. The theory I will most likely follow once I am in my own classroom will be the cognitive learning theory. The cognitive learning theory is characterized by the focus on covert activities of the mind rather than on overt behaviors like the behavior learning theory. According to Becomin...
In Matthew Sanders, “Becoming a Learner: Realizing the Opportunity of Education,” he teaches the readers that there is much more to college than the basic material in which we learn. We should approach our college education with an optimistic view on learning both who we truly are, as well as the material for specific job skills. Matthew Sanders states, “I am suggesting that you be more concerned about who you are becoming as a learner rather than about the specific job skills you may be acquiring.” It is vital to our growth in our educational studies. There are so many opportunities that come our way during college.
Every other country in the world that is on the same level as America industrially and developmentally offers universal health care to its citizens. Some Americans are worried about the rise in taxes if the government offers guaranteed care to everyone. The insurance companies will suffer, as well. But the sacrifice is more than worth it.
I decided to write my paper using the essay “Should Everyone Go to College” written by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill. This essay talks heavily about the differences between a bachelor’s degree and a high school diploma. When considering what a person wants to do for the rest of his life, the first option he might consider is whether he needs to go to college to do so. Though people may think college is not for them, a college may be more than they think. The higher the college degree, someone earns, the bigger chance he has to make more money.
I have realized by watching my children learn and grow that every day is a learning experience. Each day they wake up ready for a new ch...
Surface current are found in the upper four hundred meters (400m) and makes up about ten percent (10%) of ocean (Briney, n.d.). Surface ocean currents are as a result of friction between the water and atmosphere interface. The wind exerts a force or stress to the ocean surface and causes the water to move. The winds that most affect the oceans’ currents are the Westerlies which produce belts of ocean currents that flow east in the mid-latitude and the Trade winds which generate currents that flow to the west in tropical latitudes. These winds are mainly a result of warm air from the tropics moving towards the poles. The direction of the current is not the same as the direction of the wind but it is deflected at a forty five degree angle. This deflection is resulted from the earth’s rotation on its axis called the Coriolis force/ effect. Coriolis force and constrains by continental land masses cause surface currents to develop into an alm...
College education has always been seen as a gateway to making more money and living a better life. Going to college was seen as the next step that any ambitious American must take in order to make something of themselves and make their parents proud. Teachers fill their student’s heads with propaganda by telling them the only way to achieve their goal is through a proper education and with that, there is nothing they cannot do; however that is no longer the case. College takes years of diligent work and sacrifice to complete and in many cases result in the graduate being unemployed. Many people cannot handle the stress that comes with attending college and end up giving up on their dream. With the declining economy, it has become hard for students who did manage to graduate to get a job or to even afford an education. While getting a proper education is important in order to get a good job or a career, going to college is no longer the best option. Americans should no longer go to college since it has a high cost for attending, with no guaranteed rewards and there are better options available.
In the United States of America, the richest nation of the world, one in six Americans do not have enough food to eat. Have you ever wonder why there are so many food banks and food pantries throughout the country? They are not simply, as you thought, existent to offer emergency food assistance. Indeed, they are the main sources of food to millions of food-insecure Americans. Food insecurity, the state of not having sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food, has been very widespread and common in America. It affected millions of Americans and has been increasing dramatically in recent years; in 2012, more than 48 millions of food-insecure Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (McMillan). The depth
Throughout my life I have attempted to understand many concepts. Some of them I understood right away, while others took me much longer to comprehend. Several times though, I have experienced a light-bulb moment and suddenly understood what I did not understand only moments ago. The sudden sense of accomplishment from such moments is wonderful because not only have you learned a new skill, but you also learned it in a short period of time. The time between learning a skill and experiencing the light-bulb moment where you finally understand it may take a long time, or it may be very brief.
There are two causes of ocean currents: wind and convection. The more important of the two is convection. The act of convection in a fluid is the tendency of a heated part of the fluid to rise up due to the fact the it is less dense and it is replaced by cooler fluid which is then heated, rises up, and again replaced by cooler fluid. There has been plenty of recent research on the topic of ocean currents and convection, some of which might change the way we view the ocean. In this paper I will explain exactly what convection is, I will explain how and why it makes such a drastic effect in our ocean, and I will discuss the latest research that has been done on ocean currents.
The currents at the surface of the ocean are split in to two categories, tidal currents and surface currents. Tidal currents occur around land masses and are influenced mainly by the gravitational pull of our sun and moon. They change rapidly but predictably and contribute to surface currents. Surface currents occur over different areas of earth’s ocean. Two main factors affecting the surface currents are wind and the Coriolis Effect. The Coriolis Effect explains how the rotation of the earth seems to cause a deflection of anything moving above the earth’s surface. It is this effect that causes winds and water in the northern hemisphere to appear to deflect to the right and in the southern hemisphere to deflect to the left. One of the major surface currents is the Gulf Stream. Water in around the Caribbean is warmed by the sun and then carried north and east along the coast North America. These sun warmed waters release their stored energy into the westerly winds and Northern Europe benefits by having a much milder winter than t...
When I think about what counts as learning to me, I think about my life. Just being able to live in this world to me is a learning experience, because I feel that my life is full of lessons and I believe that it takes lessons to learn in life. I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I could ever do before. I am learning to be more serious and I find myself not taking life for granted anymore.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
One of the most important ways in which this class provided a beneficial learning experience is the fact that as a student it gave me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge by being able to properly do research, document that information, As wells as bringing my message in an informative, answer-driven format by broadening my communicational skills.
When I think about knowledge the first thing that comes to my mind is education. I believe that knowledge comes to people by their experiences in life. In other words, life is an instrument that leads me to gain knowledge. Many people consider that old people are wise because they have learned from good and bad experiences throughout their lives. Education requires work, dedication and faith to gain knowledge. We acquired knowledge through the guidance of from parents, role models, college/University teachers and life experiences.
Learning initially begins with one's attitude toward themselves, others, and the world we live in. It is our attitudes that play a major role in shaping our experiences, which in turn affects the way in which we learn. We must first be able to interpret the world using information we already know, in order to understand something entirely new. As a teacher, I could only hope that I can provide children with a positive educational experience, one that will broaden the scope in which they view themselves, others, and the world on a larger scale. Children already acquire a desire to learn, however, it is up to us to sti...
