Iceland and Greenland are located at high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere and they face each other across the sea. Though Iceland is considered one of the five Nordic countries while Greenland belongs to North America, both of them were once colonies of Vikings and played important roles in Viking age. Viking civilization experienced from prosperity to decline during 8CE to 14CE on these two islands. It is very possible to find out the reasons for Viking’s ups and downs through studying the histories of Iceland and Greenland’s development.
The history of medieval Iceland and its society is evidenced through the sagas that were produced during that era. The history of the Icelandic Commonwealth is founded in the history of European settlers by their self- governing through common consent instead of a king or priest. This period reveals a political structure that emphasized a personal independence and law. As revealed through Icelandic Sagas such as Njal's Saga, there was no political state to enforce the rules and obligations of a structured society. The patriarchal society pursued its ends without any interference from a common enforcement agency and they acted on their own behalf to achieve safety and legitimate rights.
Percival Everett’s “The Appropriation of Cultures” (2004), demonstrates the power of a symbol and the meanings that it can carry. In the story, Daniel Barkley is a highly accomplished African American man who graduated from Brown and frequently plays guitar near the campus of The University of South Carolina. From the beginning of the story, Barkley exposes a distinct independent personality that isn’t afraid to break stereotypes or labels. The first scene describes an instance in a bar where white fraternity boys were challenging Barkley to play ‘Dixie’ for them. Instead of refusing, like most would have done, he instead begins to play and take ownership of the song. Later in the story, Barkley decides to purchase a truck with a giant confederate flag decal in the back. Despite the strange stares and confusion
Ethnography is a research method used to explore different cultures from a personal view. Many anthropologists have sought to use ethnography as their main study method because of its specificity and opportunity to get hands on. Those that participate in ethnographies are expected to accurately record detailed accounts of the society in which they are staying, but at the same time maintain a critical distance.
After being exiled from Iceland, Erik and his family decided to sail westward, which was unlike many other voyagers. (hakaimagazine, Zack Zorich 2015) They had settled in an unexplored and barren land which they named ‘Greenland’ in the hope of attracting other Vikings and voyagers, as Erik figured an attractive name would make it easier to persuade people to move there. After little exploration Greenland.com (2017) argues that Erik and his family discovered a variety of productive valleys and great fjord setting. After colonizing Greenland and producing a small settlement Erik returned to Iceland three years later and broadcasted his new country. From there Erik the Red’s astonishing navigational marine skills were prominent as he took a fleet of 25 ships back to Greenland with him. The ships carried many men, women and other necessary fundamentals to construct a flowing colony on the land of green. Though only 14 of the 25 ships made it to Greenland he however achieved a successful settlement and become a leader of his newly founded country. Thus, Erik’s traveling skills and ability to start a new establishment highlights his legendary and renowned past as a famous Viking of
In today’s society there are many words that are used or said without giving it complete thought. For example, the word “identity” is something to which I have never really given much thought or even considered how I identify myself.
A few of the most important elements of culture that I identify myself with would be language and values and beliefs. Language is the medium in which societies all over the world can communicate with one another. For example, in Ecuador, the language of Spanish is the means in which everyone can communicate with one another and share their beliefs and values with one another. Language allows us to be able to pass down culture from one time period to the next, which is called cultural transmission. This is vital in order for societies to learn from other’s previous mistakes and be able to succeed and learn. Thus, enabling societies to begin to value certain aspects of life or have beliefs, such as providing equal opportunity to everyone regardless
According to Webster’s Dictionary, culture is defined as tradition or a way of life. It is also a defining principle in how we live our life and the type of people we become. The Salish Indians of the Montana and Celie, the main character of the book The Color Purple, are two examples of cultures that made them who they are. Celie is a poor, black, woman growing up in Memphis, Tennessee in the mid-twentieth century. The men have constantly put her down, through beatings and rape, for being a woman with no talent at all. Her husband’s lover comes to town and gives Celie a chance to see a culture where a woman can stand up for herself and teaches her that love is possible. The Salish on the other hand have a culture that has gone on through the ages and still is a part of each person today despite the obstacles they have had to face. Culture does shape us because from birth it is what tells us our ideals, laws, and morals that we live by each day.
Norway is one of the “three fingers” of Scandinavia, and is just larger than New Mexico. It covers 125,181 square miles. It is located in Northern Europe, bordering the North Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The coastline stretches 21,925 km. The population of Norway is 4.3 million and growing. The population is predominantly or Nordic (Scandinavian) decent. There is also a small minority (20,000) of native Sámis (Laplanders), who live mostly in the North. Many aspects of business and management in Norway are very similar to those of America including language and communication, power structures/politics, work ethics, food and eating habits, dress, and religious beliefs.
Come drink a Bit burger and eat a delicious wiener schnitzel in Germany! Germany is just slightly smaller than the state of Montana in the United States. In addition, Germany is located in central Europe and borders the North Sea and Baltic Sea in the Netherlands and, Poland. The culture built around Germany has a foundation of Art, Literature, Sports, Food, and Music. In addition, Germany’s torn past over war of its modern day is very different form our own, but is very similar in many other ways. However to truly understand the unique culture of Germany, one must know the origin of the unique Art’s, Literature, Sports, Food and, Music, that Germany is known for.
My first core value is autonomy and independence, and it is important to me because I want some freedom to decide how and when to do my job. Having autonomy will allow me to implement some of my own ideas into my work, which will increase my dedication toward the job. I also need to believe that I am the source of my actions, rather than a manager above me in order to be satisfied with my job. I have always been around and interacted with a diverse group of people throughout my education and in my community. Therefore, I want to collaborate with a diverse group of people in my workplace as well. I believe having people similar and different from me in my workplace would make me more comfortable and at ease with my job because I would be more
Today, American society has been dealing with a diversity of ethnicities ranging from African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Asian Americans for many years. In the beginning of America, there was distinguish hierarchical structure of ethnic group brought upon by de-facto segregation and de-jure segregation. However, in the turn of the mid twentieth century, America became unified under a principle of cultural pluralism. The abolishment of slavery, the desegregation of public facilities and intuitions, and the Equal Rights Act of 1964, which gave all minorities including women an equal opportunity, gave rise to the so-called “melting pot” of cultural, languages, and customs. In cultural pluralism, all the various ethnicities are unique in their own way, but not one ethnic group is higher than another. This notion of a hierarchy ethnic group has disappeared during the mist of the civil rights movement through the 1960s. Today,
Government has been a major contributor of social order and some claim that in its absence, chaos would thrive uncontrollably and society would lack any morality. However the history of Iceland shows that a society can thrive without an established government or an actual legal system. Because of Iceland's geographical location there was little threat of invasion, they did not have the same need for a standing army as other nations and kingdoms might. Icelandic settlers distrusted the idea of a strong central government and had similar ideas about how society and the law should work.
Anthropology is known as the study of human beings, over time and space. We often look at anthropology as just the evolution of mankind and their basic development. After taking a class in Cultural Anthropology, I’ve come to realize how much more in depth it is. There are many different aspects that we do not look at. We do not need to be anthropologists to see how these concepts can apply to our daily lives. Anthropology makes you to look at the world differently than you were taught too. Cultural anthropology, has a holistic approach that helps us to see how one society relates to itself and how that society can be taken on its own terms without bias. It helps to identify our own way of viewing various different cultures around the world and realize that the way we do things and see things may not be the only right way there is. There are other people around the world that are different from us and do things differently that we are used to or that we find to be “the right way”.
Culture can be summed up as the behaviors, attitudes, customs, and beliefs combined in a society at a given time and place. Culture joins people by establishing a common ground. There are many common elements that result in the formation of cultural subgroups such as religion, family traditions, and the arts. The two most important cultural elements that have influenced my own social group (for better or for worse) would be communication styles and roles within the family.
