By the 1920s, the world had already begun mass manufacturing automobiles for both the general public and private racing. However, there were only several different automobile companies present at the time, with only two in Italy. It wasn’t until the later 1920s, where Ferrari, a well-known sports car company today, joined the ranks of Fiat and Alfa Romeo. With the birth of Ferrari at a pivotal time in history, Enzo Ferrari was able to an extremely successful automobile company that is still being manufactured today.
If it were not for Enzo Ferrari, the company would have never come about. Enzo Anselmo Ferrari was born to a family of metalworkers on the outskirts of Modena in February of 1898. When World War One came about, both his father and brother were drafted, but were quickly killed by influenza in 1916. One year later Enzo himself was drafted into the Italian military and assigned to the Third Alpine Artillery Division. A few months later, he was honorably discharged from the Military due to a serious illness. Not wanting to return to school, he begins his journey with motor racing companies. (Ferrari)
After regaining his health, Enzo begins test-driving and eventually racing motorcars. In 1918, he manages to find work as a test-driver for a company in Turin that built the very popular Torpedo style car. After a year of work as a test-driver, Enzo moved to Milan, where he worked with C.M.N. (Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali) first as a test-driver, then as racing driver. For the next two years, Enzo found himself winning several different racing tournaments, while attracting the attention of the Alfa Romeo racing company. It was primarily founded by William C, Durant, along with Louis Chevrolet, on November 3, 1911. It wasn’t until six years of existence that it became part of the Automotive Division at General Motors, otherwise known as GM. Durant had previously tried to buy out Ford and failed. Dale Earnhardt grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina, a textile mill town. His father, Ralph Earnhardt, was known as "Iron heart" on the short-track racing circuit, and he taught Dale how to drive stock cars and work with engines. His father had converted a barn behind the family home into a garage, and he was well known for his skill with engines. Earnhardt's earliest memory is of watching his father race. Dale dropped out of high school after the eighth grade because he tried ninth grade twice and just couldn't do it. From getting our food, clothes, and technology to just going to the store across the street, cars are a very important part of our society. In the 18th century, only the wealthy people had access to automobiles, and they only used cars for fancy transportation and to show off their money. This was because of the extreme prices of cars in the 18th century. With these high prices not many people could afford them, especially not the working class. Henry Ford reevaluated the automobile industry in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. With Ford's enthusiasm to mechanics, he perfected the assembly line, developed cheap cars for the common people, and sparked an era of mass production. Because of this, Ford paid higher and his actions allowed the common people to have access to cars.
Henry Ford, the man who revolutionized the car industry forever, founded his company under the beliefs that a car wasn’t a high-speed toy for the rich but instead a sturdy vehicle for everyday family needs, like driving to work, getting groceries or driving to church. When he was a young man, he figured out how to use simple inventions, such as the light bulb. He then taught himself the design of a steamboat engine. His goal was to build a horse-less carriage. He had come up with several designs and in 1896, he produced his first car, the Model A. When Ford’s first car came out, he had been interviewed by a reporter and when asked about the history of the car, he had said “History is more or less bunk.” Ford worked in Thomas Edison’s factory for years and the left to become an apprentice for a car-producer in Detroit. An economy of scale is an important factor within the Italian automobile industry. This is due to continuing European integration and that the Italian automobile industry is dominated by a company known as Fiat. Fiat was founded in July 1899. Fiat started with a plant in New York that manufactured then established relationships with other countries leading to exports to France, Austria, Great Britain and Australia. Since Fiat was called on for a lot of equipment during WWI, Fiat became well known throughout Europe. As years passed Fiat began to also acquire other automobile companies such as Lancia, Autobianchi, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Ferrari. In 1988, 59.9% of the vehicles sold and approximately 99.2% of the automobiles produced in Italy were made by Fiat. The company continued to enter numerous international agreements for the manufacturer of Fiat products and to expand its investments. This also lead to new factories that were built outside of Italy, which were South Africa, Yugoslavia, Argentina, Turkey and Mexico.
