If people were asked what percentage of technological jobs are held by women, most would guess around 50%. But in fact, women’s involvement in technological fields has dropped significantly in the last decade, leaving less than 25% of such jobs being held by women. This prevents economies from developing and prevents communities from reaching their full potential. As John Kerry said, “No country can get ahead if it leaves half of its people behind. This is why the United States believes gender equality is critical to our shared goals of prosperity, stability, and peace, and why investing in women and girls worldwide is critical.” The lack of women in technology is a problem that faces us daily, but can also be changed daily. One reason why there is a lack of women involvement is because women are not encouraged to enter technology fields, or are encouraged to leave technology fields. This may be due to stereotypes, as women in technology related fields report greater stereotype threat concerns than men in the same fields (Deemer). This also may be because they were told they could not perform as well, because they saw posters/ads aimed towards men, or because their peers or teachers were mostly male. The lack of women in technology may also be due to socialization (Demiray). Socialization is the process by which individuals of either gender learn the norms, attitudes, and behaviors of society. Society leads many to believe that men are the producers of technology, and women are the domestic users of it. Factors like family, media, peers, and school can embody the belief that technology is not a women’s job, and from birth, women are socialized to believe the same thing. Aside from the social aspects, there are also educational aspects. Many women are not taught about technology until high school or college, which is often past the critical point of their education. As women graduate and get jobs, there is sometimes sexism in the workplace (Guynn). Even the most progressive technology companies have been criticized for not having skilled women in leadership positions, and many women in technology firms claim to have been sexually harassed or marginalized at work. Another reason why women are not encouraged to join technology fields is women in technology’s lack of role models (Wolcott). A large amount of educational technology research is conducted and published by male authors, and women who succeed often have a role model in the same field like a mother, sister, or friend to introduce them to the field. For example, the original group of ENIAC programmers consisted of 6 women. In 1946, these women helped to develop the first operating stored-program computer.6 If female talent such as this goes to waste because of social neglect, the science world will never know what possible discoveries that could have been made with the help of women. If Dr. Djerassi is accurate with his examples of discrimination, the science world should take note of these problems and attempt to solve them.
In an excerpt titled "The Feminist Face of Antitechnology" from his 1981 book Blaming Technology, Samuel C. Florman explains why he thinks so few educated women in modern society are engineers. The excerpt was written shortly after he had visited an all-female liberal arts school, Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, to convince a few young women to become engineers. His mission failed and his essay makes clear why he had such trouble.
Today’s college students have the opportunity and freedom to choose their major and their career path. Many factors influence the decision of a college student’s career paths including background, general interests, personal strengths, time commitment, and job outlook. Although many important decisions are made in college, one of the most important is the choice of major and career track. Out of hundreds of majors the science and engineering fields are under-represented by women. Although the numbers of women in science technology, engineering, and mathematics, STEM, majors has been increasing in the past years, women still are in the minority in the STEM fields. In her study, Lona Whitmarsh concluded, “that career opportunities for women have widened,” but “not enough change has occurred to show significant differences between the overall population” (49). It is good that more women are entering these fields, but there are still not enough young women aspiring to fill the gaps. Further statistics show that female representation in engineering continues to be low, “in 2008 only 19 percent of bachelor’s degrees, 22.9 percent of masters, and 14.8 percent of PhDs in engineering were awarded to women” (Bystydzienski 2). Although there has been a general increase of women entering the fields of science and mathematics, overall the numbers are still low, showing that women struggle in pursuing a degree within these fields, and that many factors can lead to a female not choosing to begin or complete college in a STEM major. Women are in the minority of STEM fields.
Even though women statistically get the good degrees, they still have lesser possibilities in getting a job after graduating. – because of gender performativity women need to act in specific ways in order to even get a job.
On the other hand, studies show that the number of women working has dramatically changed since 1970. These studies show that back then, the workforce was made up with 37.97 percent of women. Comparing this percentage to the studies made from 2006 to 2010, the presence of women in the workplace has increased at least 10 percent. The first reason for gender inequality is income disparities. The reason for income disparities is because men are getting more median wage than women. Women are often paid less for the same thing as men only because they are women. So the realization had once been deliberately chosen less high paying careers than men. Some of these jobs would be secretarial, clerical to explain why men in a particular company would make more money than a women in the same company. That may have been true once, but no longer that way in today’s economy. Now that more women are holding mid-level management jobs the career choices by men are ambitions to women’s pay disparities.
Donna Haraway’s essay, ‘A Cyborg Manifesto’ is an analysis of women and advanced technology in a postmodern world. Haraway uses various illustrations to focus on women’s relation to the technologically scientific world, she uses the metaphor of a cyborg to challenge feminists and engage in a politics beyond naturalism and essentialisms. She also uses the idea of the cyborg to offer a political strategy for the dissimilar interests of socialism and feminism. In her manifesto, Haraway describes a cyborg as a hybrid of machine and organism or a cybernetic organism, created by the advances in technology.
STEM is best known as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM for many years has been primarily seen as and stereotyped into a masculine work field. But as of recent years, while it expands, more and more women have been rising in these fields. With technology rapidly changing as fast as we blink our eyes, it is important for people to learn as much as possible about the computer world if they want to maintain a decent lifestyle because the world we live in revolving around those technologies. As McKee points out, “most jobs now require intelligence and technical skill” (1). Each year, there is something either added or modified to computers, which forces people to learn computer literacy at a steady pace. While some love computers, others despise them. When comparing people’s attitudes towards computers, statistics show a gender gap that proves most females’ attitudes are drastically different from the attitudes of males. Several studies prove that women not only lack an interest in technology, but they also chose not to enroll in computer classes. Since computers and technology play an enormous role in the world today, more technology professionals are needed. It is extremely important for more women to become knowledgeable in these areas. Swain and Harvey argue, “This technology gender gap is affecting half our population and causing it to be unprepared to contribute to the demands of a high-tech twenty-first century” (17). While this may not seem like a serious issue to some, it is an issue that will ultimately lead to a bigger problem if not handled immediately. So why are there so few women in the technology field? To answer that question, I must first find out why are there so few women in the technology and computer classes, considering that this atmosphere is the most common place where the interest for computers is born.
The Role of Women in Society Women are important in our society. Every woman has her own job or duty in this modern society in which men are still the strongest gender. We can t forget that women s life is a lot more complicated than a man s life. A woman has to take care of her own personal life and if she is a mother, she has to take care also about her children s life, too. Marriaged women have lots of worries and believe it or not, they carry out a more stressful life than married men.
The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past. A woman’s role in today’s society is more valued than ever before.
