According to Mathis, Jackson and Valentine (2013) the Psychological Contract refers to the unwritten expectations employees and employers have about the nature of their work relationships.
Thankfully I have worked for more employers who have, for the most part, gotten the psychological contract right. I am an extremely engaged employee. I always say “ I work like I own the place”. Do not misunderstand, I am no Miss Goody Two Shoes but I work very hard to uphold my end of the psychological contract. However, with that being said, the reality of how my company executed the psychological contract also triggered me to make adjustments on my end. Needless to say my motivation to perform suffered a serious decline. Not necessarily because I did not get a raise but, because I gave more than what was required and received absolutely nothing extra in return. Well I did get some advice on how I could exceed expectations. This advice did not give me any desire to want to do more. For the first time in my life I actually decided mediocrity was just fine, because this company was after blood, sweat and tears and they feel no need to fairly compensate for anything less than those three elements. In his book, Anderson (2006) proposes that there are mental illnesses out there that individuals are dealing with, that really has, the characteristics of demonic possession. The aim of this essay is to analyse four theoretical approaches to psychology, including psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive and behavioural. Analysing each approach in detail and identifying key features the approach uses to explain human behaviour. This essay will also analyse how successful each approach is in it methods, evidence gathering techniques and analyse how it can be applied to giving reasons for particular human behaviours. For my psychology interview assignment, I had the privilege of interviewing Elaine, who is the Director of Preschool X, which is an educational institution. She reports that she has been in this position for 13 years since its inception. Elaine is a close friend of my aunt, which was how I was able to meet her. She explained that her responsibilities include; the hiring of all personnel related to the school, submission of criminal background checks, the medical reports for all staff and children must be current, and also developed a curriculum for the teachers to execute. She has parent meetings and she deals with parents on a daily basis. For any arising issues, Elaine conferences with parents at least once or twice a week. Have weekly staff meetings regarding the curriculum. She also plays the role as the educational event coordinator, where she would “invite people from the dinosaur museum or alley pond park to come over to her preschool, to enrich the children”.

A psychological contract expresses the combination of beliefs and mutual understandings shared by an individual and an employer with regard to the expectations of one another in the workplace. It can be described as the set of reciprocal but not necessarily articulated expectations that exist between individual employees and their employers (Maunder, 1998). Although it is possible to examine a psychological contract in a “snapshot” in time, it is important to understand that is “organic” i.e. developmental and “living”. I never noticed how much psychology could be incorporated into everyday life. But really, any decision or action you take is related to it. I have personally been extremely interested in social psychology: why people do things because of social norms, what people do in order to look socially acceptable, etc. Others topics I also find interesting are sensation and perception; how past experiences can influence how you perceive the things around you, states of consciousness; how things that have happened in your day can be transferred into a mash of events in your dreams, motivation and emotion; what makes a person do something or what makes a person start or stop procrastination, and lastly: personality; what characteristics and traits stand out the most in a person, what makes a person who they are.
