Time to Sleep
Sleep, which is the default power-saving state in Windows Vista, is a low-power state that preserves whatever you were doing in memory. A small amount of power is used to maintain that memory (typically less than 1 watt on a modern laptop).
It causes your computer to go to sleep automatically if you haven't used the system for a set amount of time. Of course, if you know you are stepping away from your computer, you can also choose to put it to sleep manually.
On most computers that are running Windows Vista, you can put the system to sleep simply by pressing the power button (on a laptop, you can also close the lid). Screen savers were originally developed to save older monitors from damage by preventing the burn-in of pixels into the screen. Today, screen savers are mainly used to personalize computers or to protect them with passwords required after a certain amount of idle time.
Screen savers do not conserve energy. In fact, many of today's sophisticated screen savers use more energy than your computer would use under light conditions. To increase the energy efficiency of your computer and make less of an impact on the environment, you should use display blanking instead of a screen saver. The exact purpose of sleep is still not fully understood but it is thought to be a state in which organisms can regenerate and further development in the brain. When humans get enough sleep, they feel more energized and refreshed. Sleep can aid the body in fighting off harmful infections. It can also decrease the risk of obesity and some heart and blood related problems. Sleep is a time when organisms are able to repair damaged cells and produce more energy through the process of cellular respiration. Based on Laurel Nesbit, a program assistant in the Office of Sustainability here at UF, our campus manages to utilize 470,000 Megawatts of energy annually. This figure is generated from all the energy-consuming gadgets that operate on our campus on a daily bases. These gadgets include computers that are left turned on over the night even they are not in use, copiers, and the fume hoods in our laboratories. Admittedly, the success and the health of wellbeing of the students is contingent upon some of these equipment. For instance, the laboratories need the fume hoods in order to keep the experimenters safe. Instead of casting these necessities away, we can develop alternatives which will be capable of generating energy in order to compensate for the electricity that we endlessly

Monitor radiation has been discussed throughout computer journals for years. I have learned that different monitors have higher or lower radiation levels. Monitors made overseas are generally considered to have a lower radiation level than those built in the United States. For example, as an engineer the Management Information Services (MIS) unit told us that NEC monitors had much lower radiation levels than IBM monitors. After sitting at a computer during my eleven-year career as a Civil Engineer with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, I often found that headaches at the end of the day were common. My eyes felt strained due to the looking at a monitor for an extended period of time. Over the years as an engineer I bought various types of glare screens for my computer monitor. Even though I doubt the glare screens help with the reduction of radiation given off by the monitors, they do seem to help with eyestrain.
