Having Steven Covey’s Habit 5, “seek first to understand, then to be understood”, as one of my guiding principles, a first step in the change process at XYZ Middle School would be to hold several roundtable discussions with stakeholders from staff and students to parents and community as a means of comprehending how the complexities of the changing demographics are impacting the school. The school has made some organizational changes to adapt (which may account for the higher test scores at some grade levels), but suspensions and insubordination have risen while teacher retention remains low. This seems to indicate that change efforts need to be focused on the culture of the school through building relationships and capacity to effectively educate the students. Therefore, I would concentrate my change efforts on issues such as staff development that bridge understanding of the intricacies of educating a student population that is 99% free/reduced lunch such as Ruby Paynes A Framework for Understanding Poverty. The norms, values, beliefs, and rituals that embody a school’s culture are necessary barometers of the toxicity of a school culture. With that in mind, critical indicators within those categories such as teacher absenteeism, student participation in extracurricular activities, student participation in advanced or honors courses, student dropout rate, and parent participation in school events and clubs can be used as a gauge of toxicity. Some school critics and statisticians have observed that drug-dealing, vandalism, robbery, and murder have replaced gum-chewing, “talking out of turn,” tardiness, and rudeness as the most chronic problems afflicting today’s schools. If the intent of this observation is to shock and rattle the public’s sensibilities, it’s working. Of course, some of us may interpret such suggestions as merely dark, stoic, and cynical—“scare” tactics quite in keeping with the current national mood about many social issues these days.
The repetitive structure of a school day, in a way, provides me with a sense of security, an awareness of what to expect, but it can be monotonous and lack excitement. When you consider how much time students spend in school it is clear that the experience shapes their lives and can have a lasting effect. It is for this reason that it is crucial to have the correct balance of conformity and individuality for the benefit of both civilization and individuals.
In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
Research shows that the learning environment encompasses more than just the classroom that learning and teaching takes place. Many factors contribute to a learning environment, including the students, teachers, parents, school staff, policy makers, specialists, support staff, community members and the different learning spaces and resources available. This reflective journal will discuss some ways that teachers can set up the learning environment to maximise teaching and learning and some potential advantages and difficulties for me as a new teacher.
With social and emotional skills, a high-quality learning environment that has high-quality classroom structure and rules, commitment to the academic success of all students and high performance expectations, student learning is optimized. Attitudes towards learning, behaviour in and out of the classroom and academic performance have shown improvement with development from quality social and emotional learning that is supported through parent involvement and integrated throughout the entire curriculum.
One thing that does not work in our school-wide support committee is students not being responsible for their own actions. For instance, we have a big number of students that do not complete assignments in the classroom. Sometimes I go to the restroom and I observe students not flushing the toilet or throwing trash outside the trash can and I have to talk to them about being a responsible person. Another expectation that we need to improve in our school is students not respecting each other and not respecting other’s property. For instance, last year, there were many incidents about students not respecting other’s property and not being polite to their peers. In our district, we also need to improve on how to deal with the negative behavior of students in the classroom and stop sending them to the office or ISS (In-School-Suspension) because if students are sent out of the classroom because of inappropriate behavior, they are losing instruction in all their classes. These are not effective ways to handle student’s disruptions in the classroom; therefore, educators need to establish a learning environment that will decrease disruptions and increase student’s learning. Much of what is taken for granted in schools today are the things that will form the foundation for lifelong achievements of students. The imperatives are not only for schools to achieve top GSAT scores or have a group of students transitioning to traditional high schools, but to ensure that all the students that pass through the system are mold, shaped and equipped with the appropriate skills that will prepare them for life. Such skills include the ability to think critically, communicate well and work effectively in a team. If students are taught how to live and work together, they will be able to function harmoniously in a group, (Baker, 2006). A sustainable positive school climate fosters holistic development which is necessary for a productive contributory and sustainable life in a democratic society, (National School climate council, 2013.)
My goal as an educator is to continually learn, reflect and change my practices in order to ensure all students learn at high levels. As I stated earlier, my initial educational philosophy was behavioral. I was somewhat surprised to find that I still scored the highest in this category on my self-assessment. However, after further reflection and reading B.F. Skinner, I believe that behavioral aspects still have an important role in education today. As an educator I have a moral responsibility to help students learn how to function as members of a classroom community. Skinner believes that the environment of a classroom and school should be as “conducive as possible to students’ learning”. The entire community plays an essential role in the growth and development of children within our community. As a school leader, building an inclusive school culture that is open and friendly to all stakeholders using a variety of effective methods is crucial. There is no magic formula to incorporating a positive school culture, much depends on the leadership of the campus. The leadership on campus cultivates the climate providing support and respect for everyone invested in the student’s education.
Before such things can be implemented, there is some specific ground work and strategies that must be done within the schools before situations or dealt with and handled. In this groundwork, principals are vital in the success of the program they implement in their schools (Ballard, Argus & Remley, 1999).
