Motherhood is the state or experience of having and raising a child. To me motherhood is not only contained in those two actions. Motherhood is being there for your child, Women should become mothers because it is something worth going through. Imagine giving birth to a child and watching them grow and becoming better and better every day. Motherhood is defined as the social practices of nurturing and caring for people, and thus it is not the exclusive domain of women (Arendell 2000). In most societies, however, women not only bear children but also are primary caretakers of infants and children. Motherhood is one of the few universal roles assigned to women. Being biologically tied to a child doesn’t mean that you are a mother. There are some situations where a biological mother is unable or unwilling to care for a child and in turn a new person steps up and assumes the position of mother. This new person now enters motherhood. There are plenty of step-moms and adoptive-moms who feel equally attached to their child as any biological mother. Mom is not always the same person as Mother. Mom is an earned title not automatic. Mother is the person who gives life to a child. It takes only nine months to become a mother. On the other hand, to be a Mom takes a life commitment to hard work, worry, and the giving of one’s self for the good of a child. Mom shares a child’s joys, worries, fears, successes, and disappointments. Mom often has to give up parts of her own dreams, needs, and wants, for the welfare of the child she is raising. She does this out of love for the child Mom is the person who gives her life to the raising of a child. A person who willingly accepts the burdens, responsibilities, heart breaks, and joys of raising a child (toluna, n.d.)
