Persisting is not an unfamiliar habit for me and I use it in many ways in my day to day life. Whether it be a small task like getting through loads of clothes on laundry day or a big task like finishing school with a masters degree no matter what, I push myself and I use persistent thinking methods to help me overcome any adversities I may face. Since I already used persistence in my thinking before reading habits, the one thing I took from it was how I could use it more as a thinking method. Managing Impulsivity has always been a blessing and a curse for me because I have struggled in the past with indecisiveness. I do favor weighing out all my options when I am met with a new task, however, habits has taught me to organize all my options. …show more content…

This habit also connect well with thinking flexibly because it requires listening to another person 's perspective and gaining new knowledge because you are listening thoroughly. I have learned a variety of things in my life because I chose to listen to someone else 's ideas. Metacognition definitely helps me daily as well. When you are aware of yourself, striving for accuracy in your work will follow. Caring about your projects and what you turn into your superiors by checking your work, providing quality and time, these are thinking tools that I 'm glad I equipped at a young …show more content…
Since thinking and communication with clarity and precision has been difficult for me in the past, HoM helped me with saying what I mean and meaning what I say by speaking truthfully and thoroughly. I 'd also call gathering information through all the senses common sense or commonly used by human beings. What I did try to enhance the use in my thinking was to try to remind myself where I last felt or saw something and connect to past experiences. To create, imagine and innovate, I try to create different scenarios in my head of events or work that doesn 't exist yet and let my imagination do the work. Habits reassured me that what you create doesn 't have to be in the norm; using out of the box ideas is
Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.
Important goals about life have changed significantly suggests Kohn. With goals comes the ability to be persistent, the author mentions. He describes that persistence is one characteristic among many that could become valuable when wanting to reach a goal,
Habits are choices that one continues to do repeatedly without actually thinking about them. Habits start with a decision, but they eventually become automatic. One can probably think about things we do every day that we wish we did less of, perhaps like binging Netflix, constantly checking social media, or snacking when not being hungry. If one can understand how habits are triggered, one can learn how to overcome them. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and “Rat Park” by Lauren Slater will reveal the main strategies to recognize and overcome habits. Angie Bachman, a women who developed a gambling habit due was well aware of her habits, but she continued to drag herself into debt, resulting in losing all that she owned and getting sued by
Metacognition can be complex; however, it is essential to teach at an elementary level because it’s an intellectual habit that can be obtain by the teacher’s method of teaching and the student’s consciousness of learning. Thinking about thinking is necessary in elementary level because of the awareness of the student’s thinking process. Many people act foolishly, some based on common sense and past experience and some based on impulse and reckless idealism. In “The A&P” by John Updike, the cashier quit while acting unwarranted, he acted on intangible reasons, assumptions, while not thinking of the consequences. Many who act unwarranted end up hurting themselves and occasionally others because they do not think of the backlash that could occur based off their rash and uninformed decisions. Many awful events in history were due to unwarranted acts, the Iraq War for instance, the US decided to act militarily without tangible fact and wasted billions of dollars and killed many innocent people. Now this act is in no comparison to a war, it is just that when
The obsessive-compulsive’s style of functioning is composed of excessive rigidity, the distortion of their subjective experience of autonomy, and the loss of reality. The obsessive-compulsive is highly resistant to the influences of others due to a restriction of cognition. Suspicious thinking and a loss of reality characterize the paranoid style. Projection is the paranoid persons’ primary defense. Paranoid people are chronically suspicious, contributing substantially to their loss of reality. The paranoid actively scans his environment, searches to confirm his suspicions, and ignores evidence that denies what he suspects to be true. The two styles are much alike; they both have a way of having loss of reality at times
One of the goals of personality psychology is to develop general understanding of each specific trait and the way they interact with each other to create such a variety of personalities. One of the traits that have attracted a considerable amount of attention is impulsivity. Impulsivity is viewed as acting in a spontaneous way, or not giving much thought to potential consequences of actions before they are carried out. Typically viewed in a negative light, Charles Carver and a few other personality psychologists do make an argument that there can be both positive and negative aspects of impulsivity.

I will start by explaining the methods that make it easier for me to know my characters and skills. The first method is self-knowledge (McBride, 2010). Self-knowledge is “knowledge or understanding of one 's own capabilities, character, feelings, or motivations” (Merriam Webster, 2015). I believe the foundational element in achieving my personal and professional success is being knowledgeable about myself. Self-development starts with self-understanding. When the individuals recognize their own personality, social and emotional intelligence, strengths and abilities, it makes easy to improve their performance, address the gaps in their competencies and build around their strengths (Fallon, Begun & Riley, 2013). Self-knowledge is the way that assists me in scrutinizing my behaviors and attitudes and being more recognizable about my strengths and weaknesses traits.
For many people, they claim that the reason they aren’t doing the task is the lack of motivation. So, in order to solve the complication, is to reward yourself when the task is accomplished. By implementing this belief in order to stop procrastination, I set rewards for myself in order to attain. For example, every time I finish a section for my math class, I rewarded myself by watching Youtube, scrolling through social media, etc. By prohibiting the temptation of going on the internet, it made me finish the task quickly. As a result, being successful in accomplishing the task, compared to endeavoring a punishment due to my lackluster of performance when attaining a goal. Stated by Amelia Earhart, ”The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own
A good understanding of one’s own metacognition is necessary before aiming to understand that of other people. This is referred to as intrapersonal perception. Self-regulation, which involves self-monitoring and self-motivation, is an essential skill required to achieve academic success at university. It focuses on the concept of individuals being able to accurately judge their level of knowledge and determine the effectiveness of methods implemented for exam preparation. This allows evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, enabling individuals to engage in focused study. Students who can effectively do this will excel in their time at university. Conversely, those who lack in this skill can have major implications, such as overestimating their knowledge, thus hindering their success. Debra A. Bercher’s findings sugg...

For instance, I have learned that just simply reflecting on what I am seeing in the classroom is not enough that I have to comprehend and gain knowledge about the classroom in a more profound and meaningful way, such as relating observations to theories and psychology studies. Also I have learned to reflect more deeply on what is going on around me, not just looking at what is at the surface. I took notes during my observation. I tried to not only write what was happening, but also why it was happening and tried to convey any thoughts or feeling the students, teacher or myself had. Lastly, in my reflection, I improved my reflection skills by asking myself questions, such as, “what would I do,” “how would I do it,” and “how would I react?” Then, I would reflect back on what I had learned throughout the semester to see if I could find the most appropriate
