Have you ever had your hopes and dreams taken away because no one believes in you? In the novel “Audacity” by Melanie Crowder, Clara has many hopes and dreams that are destroyed because of the people in her life. Clara Lemlich, the Russian Jewish immigrant who couldn’t read, learn or write because of her father, wanted equal rights, equal pay, and an education, but she can’t because people try to stop her. She is timid in the beginning, shocked in the middle, and triumphant in the end. She continues to prove people wrong such as her parents, her brothers, the job owners, the police, and many more in many ways that make her the person she turned out to be. Through her hard work and determination, she is triumphant. In meshuggeneh on page 296, she shows one way she is changed. “I walk out the door before Papa’s anger has time to uncoil before Papa’s hand has time to curl into a fist.” If this happened in the first part of the book, she would’ve stayed and taken the punch, but now she is a changed young woman. Now, she walks out and won’t take the punch of her father. Also, in twenty-five on page 236, she realizes how she must fight back. She says “I have only been in this country two years but quickly, I learned you have to fight for what you want, you have to take what you need.” She used to be afraid to fight back, but now she is determined to become triumphant in the end. Clara Lemlich is a Russian immigrant girl who fights for equal rights, her own education, and for her parents to believe in her. Clara changes extremely from the beginning to the end of the story. She is timid in the beginning when she is living back in Russia, then becomes shocked when she moves to New York City, then is triumphant as she becomes more independent when she stands up for herself.
